Smon: You all notice that vultures have begun to circle above the corpse-filled building, almost as if your entry had broken a spell keeping most scavengers away.
Smon: It's currently just after noon, the sun is high in the sky. It will probably rain in an hour or two.
Amalric: "Where to now, chaps?"

Smon: "Q" is the deep quarry pit you passed by, M a collection of ruined buildings. 
Smon: From your vantage point you can see a square, dominated by a dry fountain (N) past the nearest ruins.
chris107: going to log out for one minute. See if I can get both windows up at the same time.
Smon: L is an ancient arena, the stone stands covered by thick vines. Several bridges span the central canal. Beyond the canal you can see several smoke trails rising in the northern city, signs of habitation.

Amalric: "Excellent notion! Let us proceed."
Smon: The largest and darkest smoke trail comes from the far north-east of the city, H on the map.
Smon: Are you heading due north in its direction?
Goonergeezer: (is there any smoke closer than that? if so we should go towards those ones first)

Smon: You are at "P". There are closer trails north-west, just over the canal - B on map.
chris107: Thanks
Smon: There's a smaller smoke trail from just north-west of "O" - O appears to be a pair of long pools dominated by water lilies.
Amalric: Let's try B, yes?

Smon: GM: OK, the four of you set off north-west through the city. Jana mutters to herself as you pass near a large stone warehouse, M on the map: "Evil spirits dwell here... We should not be here at nightfall."
Amalric: "Noted, Jana. But do not worry, I will have you tucked up safe and warm come nightfall."
Smon: Jana smiles coyly. Ahead (at N) you approach a broad plaza dominated by a dry fountain bedecked with statues of Bacchus, Poseidon and other deities, surrounded by a pool full of viscous green goo.
chris107: "Yuk!"
Goonergeezer: "her,her,her,her looks like snot"
Smon: The northwest side of the plaza leads down to the central canal, and a decreipt looking stone bridge arcs over the canal to 'B', what looks like a rather sinister temple - short, squat, scorched with fire and devoid of any plant life. Smoke rises, perhaps from a cooking fire in the central atrium.
Amalric: "Or...perhaps from burning sacrifices?"

Smon: It looks maintained, fire has been used to scorch away the vines that creep everywhere else over the ruined city.

Smon: where there are plants, yes.
Smon: Not inside or in the open courtyard.
Amalric: QuickTime always crashes early on, but for some reason i still see the messages
chris107: Is there a plant covered rout to the ruined temple?

Smon: You could sneak around the edge of the courtyard, but getting to the temple means crossing the bridge, where you'd be exposed.
Smon: The bridge has a bit of hanging moss, but no real cover.
chris107: Dick doesn't want to expose himself so will stay with the gang.
Smon: It does have low stone edges though, you might be able to stay down and crawl over unnoticed.
Amalric: it's either that or we continue to search this side of the canal
Smon: Except from straight ahead - straight ahead being towards the temple B.
chris107: Poirot is dead!

Amalric: "Quite. Go ahead."
Goonergeezer: "Kay, let me finds a gud rok to frow"

Smon: Are you sneaking round the western edge of the plaza to the canal, opposite the temple B?
Goonergeezer: (Kal looks around for a suitable rock, guages distance then lets fly"

Smon: GM: OK, the four of you edge around the plaza to the canal, no sign of activity. From this side of the canal a strong arm could maybe hit the door with a rock - Kal can roll to hit AC 9.
Goonergeezer rolls 1d20 and gets: 18,
Smon: The rock bounces off what looks to be a stout but very crudely made wooden door.
Smon: You hear a yell of alarm from within the temple.
Smon: /roll 2d6
Goonergeezer: Kal thren quickly hides
Smon rolls 2d6 and gets: 5, 3, = 8 
Smon: There's a brief flurry of shouts from inside the building, to Kal it sounds a bit like Ghinoran, his native tongue (I assume he speaks Ghinoran + common so he can just about communicate with Lance & Dick)
Smon: Kal make an INT check
Goonergeezer rolls 1d20 and gets: 6,
Goonergeezer: yep 
Smon: Kal makes out the words for "Enemies" and "Beastmen".
Smon: After a moment the hubub subsides. Jana: "Those must be the savages - cannibals who worship Death - Thanatos."
Smon: The door remains shut.
Goonergeezer: "dis is like der Mason job dat i did..........
Amalric: "Shall we investigate? I think we must cross..."
chris107: Dick will load his crossbow and cover your advance...
Smon: Jana nods nervously.
Goonergeezer: "we banged on der dor den we wait a wiles, den we did it more, den wate, did dis lotsa tims, den in der end when it woz me hittin der dor, dey fort it woz kidz agin and dey not look, woz me den i kik der door down and dey go OOoooo help us, den i stiffs dem"

Smon: Jana winces at Kal's words.
Smon: Are Lance Kall and Janacrossing the narrow bridge?
chris107: (Dick winces at Kal's English  )
Amalric: "I have no idea what he just said, but lets cross the bridge. Cover us, Dick."
chris107: Dick covers them...
Goonergeezer: "ok den i cros der brige if we not dooin mason job"
Smon: GM: You cross the bridge over the fast flowing canal. You have a good view of the waterfall to your left as the river tumbles down from the escarpment; off to your right at the end of the canal it gurgles into a subterranean passage, to emerge a little further east.
Smon: Dick watches the others from a bush on the south side, among the ruins.
Smon: Lance, Jana and Kall approach the fire-scorched temple and the wooden door. The door-barricade has several gaps, you glimpse eyes, watching you from the darkness beyond the door.
Smon: Jana whispers to Lance: "If we show weakness they will try to capture us for their cooking-pots..."
Amalric: "That won't be a problem. Kall, shall we knock?"
Goonergeezer: "her,her,her,her der spshal nok?"
Smon: As you are standing in front of the door, a harsh voice calls from within: "Vashu ert?!"
Smon: Kall can tell he's asking what you want.
Smon: BTW if Lance or Dick have a bonus language from INT you can take Ghinoran if you like. 
Goonergeezer: "We com in and eat fud, get worm, yoo open dor!"

Smon: There's a long pause. "You come trade? We buy womam-hoo-not-whore?"
Goonergeezer: "I's see wot yoo got for not hore woman, open dor"

Smon: "We open door. You bring in woman." You hear the sound of a heavy bolt being lifted, then the great door opens.
Goonergeezer: "nobby bloke cum to" Kal enters first

Smon: Inside is a foul-smelling, fire-blackened chamber that might once have been the entrance hall to the temple. In the dim light you can see half a dozen warriors, five in skeleton-paint gripping spears, one in baroque bronze banded armour and carrying an ancient sword.
Smon: The armoured one gestures the three of you inside.
Smon: The armour hides his lower face, but his eyes look nervous.
Amalric: Lance is reluctant to enter, and waits for Kall's move
Smon: The savages have their spears pointed in your direction. Jana hangs back, gripping Lance's arm.
Smon: The savage leader turns to Kal. "I Kushik, great warrior. These my men."
Smon: /roll 1d6
Smon rolls 1d6 and gets: 2,
Goonergeezer: Kal manuvers himself in between the door and the fire in the room turns to Lance, "womam hoo not hore cum ere, all be gud and safe"
Smon: He produces a rock on the end of a stick, and removes a leather hoof from the rock; it shines with greenish radiance. "This magic rock! You want?" 
Smon: Jana looks to Lance.
Goonergeezer: "Yure men do yoo big onor, gud men, oooo shiny rok look nise, let me hold and look"
Smon: Kal makes out several exits from the hall, some rubble-choked. One in the east wall is clear, and through it can be seen a narrow flight of stairs, leading down.
Smon: make CHA check Kal

Smon: "Not hold. Only look."
Amalric: Lance stays where he is
Smon: Kushik holds the shining rock closer to Kal's face.

Goonergeezer: Kal get close to the chief holding the shiny rock, then turns to Lance "Now" and with that leaps on the chieftan and procedes to attempt to smash his head to pulp
Smon: Jana: "He wants to buy me for that rock on a stick..."
Smon: GM: Kal gets surprise - roll to hit.
Goonergeezer rolls 1d20+3 and gets: 11, (+3) = 14 
Amalric: "Wait here." Lance says to Jana, then charges the nearest warrior, swinging his two-hander
Smon: 2 in 6 all 3 of you get a 2nd surprise round:

Amalric: "Jana, go call on that shortarse coward Dick to come hither."

Smon: Jana nods and heads outside. She calls across the canal: "Dick! Dick!"
chris107: Dick stands up poudly.
Smon: Jana: "Dick! Lance wants you."
chris107: And jogs across the bride. Crossbow at thhe ready

Amalric: "Just an act, dear boy! False sense of security, and all that." Lance lies easily 
Smon: No sign of movement in the city. Dick reaches the temple.
Amalric: "But truly, Jana, you saved the day with your quick actions."
Smon: Jana gulps and nods to Lance. "I was much afraid, but I could not let you die... I can only do that once each sunrise."
Amalric: "Once is better than nonce."
Smon: GM: The ancient Thracian sword Kushik wielded looks very fine (+1 sword). He also had the continual light rock, and now damaged bronze banded mail.
chris107: Dick grabs the sword
Amalric: "Any of that suit you, Kall?"
Amalric: Lance kicks Dick and grabs the sword back. "Those who fought get first dibs, Dick."
chris107: Dick keeps tight hold
Goonergeezer: "Yer fanks nobby bloke" Kal grabs the sword off lance
Smon: There are stores of supplies in the smaller rooms off the main hall, including 2 50' coils of hemp rope, 36 torches, 5 bronze-tipped spikes, 24 days of dryed rations (dried smoked meat, nuts etc) 6 flagons of water, a wine flagon, 2 bronze daggers and a stone hammer.

Smon: You can all roll 1d6+STR bonus to see who has sword, Dick wins ties.

Smon: Kal emerges victorious from the scuffle, grasping the ancient blade.

Amalric: "All yours, Kal. Let's see what we can take from the provisions. And let's be quick - there may be more of them down below."
chris107: Dick grabs the posh rock

Smon: Jana: "We shouldn't fight! We should go quickly..." She picks up two sacks of dried rations.
Goonergeezer: kal shuffle off to a corner, pulls out an oily rag and begins to polish his new sword, talking to it in gentle tones
Amalric: "Either of you two have sacks or bags of any sort?"
Smon: Dick takes the continual light rock on stick
Amalric: Does the banded mail still look serviceable?
Smon: It's damaged but repairable.
Goonergeezer: i gots a large sack......Her,her,her,her and a roksak too
Smon: right now AC5, AC4 when repaired.
chris107: He waves it tauntingly at Lance
Amalric: we'll take that, some food and water, and some torches
Amalric: the armor may be worth money
Goonergeezer: kal grabs any dried ration that are left over, a coil of rope and the spikes
Amalric: lets take the wine and daggers too
Amalric: yes, Lance takes the other coil of rope
chris107: Dick displays his glowing rock on a stick proudly.
chris107: And grabs any cannibal sandwiches that may be left over.
Smon: You can collect up all the stuff.

Smon: been quite lucky on wandering monsters today 
chris107: How big is the special sword?...
Smon: The bronze armour is heavy & awkward, you'd be encumbered carrying it.
Smon: Kushik's sword is a regular 1-h sword, like a Roman spatha. 1d8 base dmg.
chris107: Too big for Dick then. He gloats happily over his magical rock.
Amalric: leave the armor then
Smon: There is a second blocked door on the north side of the temple, a viewing slit looks out over a grasy plaza, with a large hole on the west side and a great rotunda to the north-east.
chris107: Dick will scavenge any pieces of the armour that may fit.
chris107: And put them on.
Smon: The cap is slightly dented, but wearable.
chris107: he puts it on.
Smon: Very swish. 
chris107: 
Smon: I'll give +1 to his leather AC, but might affect hiding chances.
chris107: Dick gives a twirl in his new hat. Illuminated by his magical rock.
Amalric: "You look like...a dick, Dick."
chris107: Okay
Amalric: "Let us retire to somewhere safe, shall we?"
Smon: Jana nods: "We have food and water now."
chris107: Dick once again waves his magical rock under lances nose. "Kal's sword looks nice Lance." he says smuggly.
Smon: What way do you want to go?
Amalric: Do any buildings around us look hospitable or useable?
Smon: You did see a large inn/hostel type building just south of the plaza with the green slime fountain, that seemed in good condition, roof intact.

Smon: GM: You head out of the temple. The rain is pounding down, soaking you, but it's warm.

Amalric: Lance is too busy admiring the water running down Jana's naked chest

Smon: You cross the bridge, rather slippery now in the rain, over the plaza towards the large building, a hostel once dedicated to Bacchus, judging by the wall reliefs.
Smon: Jana points out the effigies of wild abandonment, and grapes. "This was a place of... pleasures..."
Smon: "Bacchus is the god of wine, revelry..."
Smon: Shallow steps lead up to a doorless archway.
Amalric: "I'm sure we'll cope, make our peace..."
Smon: Inside, rain comes in here and there where tiles have gone from the ceiling.
Smon: /roll 1d6

Goonergeezer: "Nobby bloke get my sord, i get woman hoo not hore, good barter"
Amalric: "Erm, no. She is with me, and not for...barter."
Smon: You soon find a dry spot in a corner. The building seems empty, but there is a faint musky scent and an old nest of reeds and grass - some creature laired here.
Smon: Jana takes a step towards Lance.
Amalric: is there just one room?

Goonergeezer: "yoo wont jessyca, i get not hore woman"
Goonergeezer: Kal starts strooking his new sword
Smon: There are half a dozen rooms on the ground level, only a couple have dry floors. The steps up to the higher level are partly collapsed but could be climbed with care.
Amalric: "Jana and I will take one room, Kall - you and Dick take the other. Take turns polishing your sword, if you want."
chris107: "I told you Kal. Nobby bloke will have the bird then take your sword."
Smon: In rubble at the foot of the steps is lying what looks like a writing stylus of wax, with some writing etched on it.
Amalric: Lance picks it up and shows it to Kall, or Jana, if either of them read or can understanitd 
Goonergeezer: Kal picks a room where he can keep an eye on the reed bed and see if anything returns to it in the night
Smon: The writing is runic - Dwarven script.
Smon: Kal picks the room by the animal bed.
chris107: Dick has no chance.

Goonergeezer: "Pretty picturs, hurt mt hed tho"
Smon: Jana looks at it and shakes her head. "I think it's Chacban dwarvish - but I can't read it."
Amalric: "Lets keep it, we may get it translated somewhere. Now then, who's for some dried food and water and wine?"
Smon: The stylus looks quite new, it can't have been lying there more than a few years.
Smon: Jana smiles: "Me!"
Amalric: "Well then! Let us eat, drink and be merry!"
chris107: "Yeah!"
Smon: GM: As the afternoon draws towards evening you dine well. 
Goonergeezer: kal turns to dick "got ane rat, ore we gots to eat dride stuf?"
chris107: Dick offers to share his cannibal sandwiches.
Smon: As dusk is falling the rain eases off, great clouds of mist rising from the forest.
chris107: Dick illuminates the dreary inn.
Smon: The light shines over ancient Bacchanalian frescoes.
Amalric: "Keep the light away from the doorway, Dick. We don't want to attract attention."
Smon: GM: Are you resting here overnight?
Amalric: yes, i think so. unless its a magnet for monsters
Smon: I think I'll get my boy to bed now, can resume game ca 10.05-15pm if you like?
Goonergeezer: yea, fine by me
chris107: After beer and sandwiches Dick hits the sack. Concealing his glowing rock.
Amalric: yes, fine with me
Goonergeezer: kal spends first watch oiling Jessyca and telling her all about the fun they are going to have together
Amalric: Lance spends his time thanking Jana for saving him earlier, and re-enacting some of the scenes doubtless on the frescoes around them
Smon: GM: Lance and Kal spend the night attending to their respective lady-loves, while Dick sleeps with his rock.

Smon: Towards midnight you hear the cackling sound of many hyenas off to the east, in the direction of the slaughterhouse you searched when you first entered the city.
Goonergeezer: (on a stick)

Smon: It sounds as if they're in dispute with other predators, possibly over the piles of corpses?
chris107: possibly
Amalric: lets leave them to it, we can always look in the morning

Smon: GM: There are intermittent howlings throughout the night, mixed with the cackling of hyenas and other sounds, but nothing disturbs your rest and you wake refreshed to a golden-pink dawn.

Smon: Lance & Kal are back to full hp.
Smon: Jana disentagles herself from Lance's arms and goes to the eastern portico to pray to Apollo in the light of the rising sun.
Amalric: Lance yawns and scratches his balls, then looks for more water and dried rations
chris107: Dick hides his magical light rock in his grimy underpants for safe keeping.
Smon: (the light rock has a leather hood to conceal the light BTW)

chris107: Dick looks at Jessyca with undisguised disgust - far too big he thinks.
Amalric: (a stick in your pants?)
chris107: (It looks very impressive)
Smon: After Jana has finished praying, she joins Lance for breakfast. "Should we continue to search for the statue of Mitra, Lance? It was taken by the hyena-men; it's said they dwell beneath the city..."
Amalric: "Yes, good point. Perhaps we should return to the place of our triumph yesterday. There was access below there.."
Smon: Jana nods. "Perhaps."
Amalric: Lance runs this by Dick and Kall, if they didn't hear already
Goonergeezer: "jessyca says she is ungry for blud,lets go n stiff dem ovver buggers oo ran off yeserday"
chris107: "Yup sounds good. I can light the way..."
Smon: GM: Leaving the Bacchanal hostel by the morning light, you return to the Thanatos temple, finding the door shut tight. This time there is no fire.
Amalric: "Lets go then. After breakfast."
Amalric: "Break it down, Kall."
Goonergeezer: Kal give the door the full force of his shoulder........
Smon: That's a d6+STR bonus roll.
Goonergeezer rolls 1d6 and gets: 2,

Smon: The door shudders; a regular door would have broken but this one is heavily barred.
Smon: (if you try again it'll cost you 1 hp)
chris107: Dick has his crossbow ready and waiting. The magical rock on a stick tucked into his belt.

Amalric: Lance has no luck

Smon: Lance bounces off. 
Smon: Kal smashes through! The door bursts open... (-1 hp, 8/9)
Smon: Inside is dark; the bodies are gone, no sign of life.
Smon: Judging by blood smears on the floor, it looks as if the bodies were dragged to the steps down.
chris107: We can go downstairs if you like? 
chris107: My magical rock will provide illumination.
Smon: From the top of the stairs you can make out the same dim red glow as before.
Smon: Marching order?
chris107: (Dick slides his rock back into a place of safety)
Goonergeezer: kal will go at the fromt
chris107: Dick will go first with his crossbow if you like?
chris107: At the back then 
chris107: But with his Xbow at the ready.
chris107: Lance in between?
Smon: Kal goes first, followed by Lance, Jana and Dick. The steps descend east a good distance into the earth, ahead you see the stairs flatten out into a stone tunnel that turns left after 10'.
Amalric: yes, sorry
chris107: With the not awhore woman?
Smon: Dick is at the back with the light shining?

chris107: Is the red glow giving sufficient illumination?
Smon: Yes, you can see dimly in the glow once your eyes adjust.

chris107: Then the stick remains in his grubby underpants.
Smon: Good move - as you near the bottom of the stairs, Kal spots the figure of a bone-painted Deathwalker leaning against the north wall. He spots you almost at the same moment and his eyes go wide as he reaches for a large whistle on its cord round his neck...

Smon: (I thought you'd go down silhouetted by the light rock, giving him the chance to whistle and alert his friends) 
Amalric: "Good work, Kall!" whispers Lance. "Take that whistle too, before someone else picks it up after us."

Smon: Beyond the left turn, you see the passage runs about 20' then ends at a torch-lit rope bridge that crosses a chasm.
chris107: How wide?
Smon: The chasm is maybe 30' across. Halfway across the chasm a second rope bridge is hung from the sagging middle of the first, running east out of sight.
chris107: East been left again?
Smon: A narrow tunnel runs north from the far side of the chasm, where the rope bridge ends. 
chris107: Ah so right
Smon: You're looking north over the chasm, so east is right.
Amalric: "Which way, chaps? Fancy swinging, Dick?"
chris107: Dick will quietly scuttle North

chris107: Dick will slide up the narrow passage.

Smon: From here he can see that the attached second bridge is about 30' east-west, again ending at a narrow tunnel in the cavern wall.
Smon: There is dim red light from both tunnels.

chris107: He creeps North, Xbow at the ready
Amalric: "What's out there, Dick?"
chris107: "Shhhhhhhhhh....."
chris107: (He'll prove Lances accusations of cowardice wrong..)
Smon: Dick is creeping north, he sees that the north tunnel runs about 15' then opens into a much wider east-west tunnel, with great bronze doors set in the north wall. Standing in front of the doors is a Deathwalker warrior in bronze bandmail. 
Smon: Then Lance calls out; the guard hears this and his hand goes to the bronze whistle at his neck-thong...
Smon: Dick roll init

Smon: yes

Smon: He raises a spear and advances on Dick.
Smon: What is everyone doing?

Smon: Those of you south of the bridge heard the clang of metal on metal.

Goonergeezer: Kal draws his sword and stands bt the moorings og the rope bridge, once Dick gets off the bridge, if there are enough of the deathwalkers on it he will slice the ropes

chris107: Dick gestures for his pals to follow 
chris107: But doesn't enter into the jaws of death
Smon: The giant bats flutter angrily above, ready to pounce on anyone on the bridge.
Smon: I have to leave it there!
Amalric: "Dick! Get back here, or Kall cuts the rope!"
Amalric: Deathwish Dick we'll call him
chris107: And on that cliff (or chasm?) hanger...
