8/4/48 (1100/1250 XP) Bright Star Mordred & Talaxakan on level 3 (& other groups)

Talaxakan breaks off from mountain troll fighting on level 5 to head upstairs and check out the wizard lab on level 3, running into Bright Star & Mordred.   
Encounter Small Men, Bugbears & Kobolds before Bright Star returns home.
Talaxakan meets up with Browneye the Ranger from Level 5 and together they join with other adventurers
arriving on level 3, including Featherblade, to continue investigating the Hexperiment, before returning to
level 5 via a long stair. They secure the old Yig temple on 5, then Talaxakan rejoins the other group on level 5.
Through a strange time anomaly it seems almost no time has passed...

Bright Star, Mordred & Talaxakan:
Smon: (ok back)  GM: There are rumours in Selatine a massive wizard's laboratory area has been discovered on level 3.
Smon: Dr Rosa thinks it may be the former residence of the Plated Mage.
Smon: Since Mordred is Very Wise, Dr Rosa asks him if he could investigate it if possible.
chris107: Recently returned Mordred (who seems a little queer following his recent experience) is very excited by this. He's looking at setting up research facilities in his home and can't wait to see what is there.
chris107: He also heard that there's something there that makes one smarter...
chris107: (Needs to send out messages to wizards for and wide to obtain the Blur spell too.)
chris107: (as he's only a few hundred XP from level 8 when he can learn 1 spell of any school  )
Keelia: Bright Star is happy to tag along
chris107: What do we know of this Plated Mage?
Smon: Indeed, Talaxakan reported having his intelligence greatly expanded by an arcane device in the level 3 lab. To get there Rosa recommends going Quiet Halls > stairway to Reptile House > big elevator to level 3. The gargoyles that guarded access to #3 have been destroyed.

7:47am  2018-9-08 DESTROYERBILL Has entered the room
Smon: The Plated Mage is reportedly a powerful once-human wizard rumoured to lair deep in Stonehell.
DESTROYERBILL: hello everyone
Smon: Now he is a massive machine.
chris107: "I haven't had chance to thank you properly for.. for bringing me back, Bright Star. So thank you." Mordred gives a rare shy smile.
chris107: Morning Bill
chris107: "Talaxaken, what can you tell me about this mind expanding machine?"
Smon: GM: I'm starting you guys off separately as follows: Mordred & Bright Star head across the Selatine Plane to Stonehell, say hello to Mreggle and head down to the former Yig temple/lizardman lair on level 2.

Smon: They locate the elevator without incident but see it is currently ascending!
DESTROYERBILL: hi
Smon: The elevator stops at level 3 100' below - on it they can just make out the familiar bulky form of Talaxakan.

DESTROYERBILL: hello mordred
chris107: "Can you bring the lift up here for us?"
Smon: Talakakan you have just ascended from level 4 on your personal mission to investigate the hexperiment.
Smon: Talaxakan brings the lift up, soon joining the others on level 2.
chris107: "I hear you discovered a brain expanding machine and a wizard's laboratory?"
DESTROYERBILL: lets go to level 3 becouse there are great machines that increase your power
chris107: "Dr. Rosa will be delighted!"
DESTROYERBILL: but theres a risk to be turned stupid
chris107: Mordred joins the Dragonborn Eldritch Knight in the lift.
chris107: "Oh."
Keelia: Bright Star hums thoughtfully. "How stupid?"
chris107: "Then I dare not risk such a thing. Selatine needs me."
DESTROYERBILL: you cant think talk do anything
Smon: GM: The lift descends to level 3 with much grinding and clanking...
chris107: "You were brave indeed to take such a risk."
Keelia: "That is stupid. And perhaps Mordred is correct in not risking this," she agrees.
DESTROYERBILL: i risked it and i gained power
Keelia: "Can the stupid be undone?"
chris107: "Was there any sign of this Plated Mages spell books or books of research materials?"
Keelia: "If it goes wrong?"
DESTROYERBILL: most likley with the help of magic
Keelia: "Bright Star is mildly tempted..."
DESTROYERBILL: there are more machines i hear that may be less detramental
chris107: "Did you encounter any dangers?"
DESTROYERBILL: skelaton monkeys
Smon: The lift comes to rest at level 3. A 10' landing to south opens into a hexagonal chamber 30' across with exit arches to east and west. There are 4 pedestals and the destroyed remains of several gargoyles.
chris107: "Hmmmmm... were they very dangerous?"
Keelia: "Skeleton monkeys?"
Smon: /roll d6
Smon rolls 1d6 and gets: 3,
chris107: (Should I start mapping here? I have on my smart new reading spectacles  )
Smon: yes please
Keelia: (Yay for new spectacles!  )
DESTROYERBILL: no they were super easy to kill
DESTROYERBILL: but a nasty bite
Keelia: "Bright Star has not had good experiences with the undead. She would prefer to stand behind one of you should we encounters these creatures."

chris107: "That will be my duty, Bright Star. Amala had a word with me about it whilst I was... you know.. there."
chris107: He wiggles his fingers in the air to demonstrate another place.
Keelia: Bright Star rests a hand on his shoulder briefly.
Smon: The west passage runs 10' w then turns s. The east passage runs 30' then turns n, with a side passage in s wall after 10'.
Keelia: She then claps her hands together. "Let us look for this Plated Mage."
Smon: sorry correction on west passage

chris107: (serves me right for mapping in pen  )
Smon: Looking closer  it runs w 40' before turning south, with a side passage n after 20'
chris107: "Yes, lets!"
DESTROYERBILL: ive met the plated mage twice
Smon: (sorry - always use pencil!)
Keelia: "Could he still talk? Being turned into a machine?"
DESTROYERBILL: i hear you have stone to flesh poitons mordred
chris107: (no worries, all altered)
chris107: "I do indeed, would you like one?"
Smon: The east passage looks well used, looking down it you can see bones scattered on the ground, remains of several bugbears and a human; they are mostly stripped clean of flesh. There are fragments of armour and bugbear weapons too.
DESTROYERBILL: not yet
chris107: "I made them myself you know?"
DESTROYERBILL: i know
DESTROYERBILL: he can still talk he is very nice actually
chris107: "Which way would you suggest Talaxakan? You've been here before."

Smon: Talaxakan you recall that the wizard's lab was down the east tunnel and turn right, the screamy room is first.
DESTROYERBILL: lets go down there
chris107: Mordred follows the clever Dragonborn.
Smon: From the screamy room it's south to the brain machine and monkey skeletons or east to the lenses then south to the Hexperiment, the vast complex of circular rooms that seem to harness vast arcane energies.
DESTROYERBILL: strength 20 con 18 int 19 pretty good
Keelia: Bright Star trots along after them.
chris107: Wow!
Smon: GM: You go east then south
chris107: I thought I'd rolled well
DESTROYERBILL: i got good rolls
Keelia: those are very good rolls!
DESTROYERBILL: got 16 on str 16 on con 14 on int
DESTROYERBILL: macheine gave me +5
Smon: You come out into a chamber 20' n-s 30' e-w lined with wardrobes, most open. Doors to south and east. An unseen voice screams! "AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!"

DESTROYERBILL: dont worry its just a borring old aalarm
Keelia: Bright Star twitches and draws her bow. "What screams?"
Keelia: "Ah."

Smon: Cages of various sizes; huge machine; slabs with restraints; faint smell of primates... the room is vast, 30' e-w by 40' n-s w door at s end of w wall.
Smon: The machine device comes from
the Mad Scientist school of design: weird antennae,
metal caps connected to wires, and metal slabs with
restraints.
chris107: "Were the monkey skeletons in these cages?"
Smon: There are lots of switches and dials.
DESTROYERBILL: no in the room next door
chris107: Mordred drools just a little.
chris107: "Oh my."
DESTROYERBILL: if you want to sit on the slab to begian the prosses
chris107: "Would this fit into your magical bag, Bright Star?"
Smon: It appears to have two primary settings - "Mental Transfer" and "Brain Amplification" - it is currently set to BA.
Smon: It's about 12' across and 7' high.
Keelia: Bright Star looks at her bag and then all the machinery. "probably not. At least not in one trip."
chris107: "That's a shame. We could learn much from such stuff."
chris107: Mordred is already imagining the wonderful machine humming away in his basement.
chris107: "I dare not risk destroying my brain. Amala has plans she needs me to fulfill."
DESTROYERBILL: magic will fix you if it goes bad

Smon: Looks like the monsters are sleeping late today.
Keelia: Bright Star shrugs. "You can try it on Bright Star if you promise to fix her if she becomes stupid."

DESTROYERBILL: theres never a certain
Keelia: Bright Star squints at him. "Just a probably?"
DESTROYERBILL: yeah
Keelia: Bright Star frowns. "Very well. Promise you will try very hard."
DESTROYERBILL: do you know any high level wizards or clerics by any chance
Smon: OOC Restoration is a level 5 spell BTW
chris107: "I'm afraid I don't. Well just that tart who came to Selatine last year. Such a floozy!"
DESTROYERBILL: mordred youre in a good politcal state is there a chane you could get dyson to do it
Keelia: "We know Danor. He is a cleric, but not strong enough to resurrect yet."
chris107: "Hmmm. I never met the Grand Dragon. A shame. He could show us so much."
DESTROYERBILL: yeah
chris107: "Didn't he go off with the Bronzes?"
DESTROYERBILL: you hear a black son assasion killed him you cant amagine someone that powerful

chris107: Mordred inspects the machinery avidly
DESTROYERBILL: you know that the scandics slaughtered the overlords fleets
chris107: "So where do we plug Bright Star in?"
DESTROYERBILL: just on the correct slab hook her up and sh will be fine
chris107: "I heardthe sad news, yes. It does not bode well for those of us here in the south."
DESTROYERBILL: but fist what kind of person are you bright star
Smon: GM: There are two canted slabs with restraints and silvery metal skull caps with curly wires to attach to head.
DESTROYERBILL: its important for the calabrations
Smon: T can identify the correct slab and has the dials set for int augment although there are some seemingly random calibration dials.
DESTROYERBILL: can i make a arcana check to figure out what those random dials do
Smon: yup
DESTROYERBILL rolls 1d20+7 and gets: 15, (+7) = 22

Keelia: Bright Star blinks. "What do you mean, "What kind of person"? Bright Star likes shinies and sneaks very well. She is also tabaxi."
Smon: GM: T can calibrate the dials for humanoid female

Smon: There is a setting dial for human - primate - canid... felid!
Smon: GM: OK is BS going through with it? T can recalibrate, giving a bonus on the roll.

Keelia: Bright Star holds out her hands for the skull cap.
Smon: BS has to lie on the slab, have the silver cap attached & the restraints so she's secure as the thaumaturgic energy flows.

Smon: Purple tinged white lightning corruscates from the diodes! Your hair/fur stands on end as a thrumming fills the room.
DESTROYERBILL: i press the button

Smon: Thaumaturgic energies course through Bright Star!

Keelia: "It might fit in Bright Star's bag now," she says into the following silence.

Smon: M is left sitting in the ruins of the great machine.
Smon: Hair scorched, face blackened.
DESTROYERBILL: can i make an arcana check to see what happaned
chris107: "My hair?!"
DESTROYERBILL rolls 1d20+7 and gets: 18, (+7) = 25
Smon: Looks like the machine short circuited.
DESTROYERBILL: but why
chris107: Ah well, does M seem to have suffered any mental imparment?
Smon: Possibly corrosion in the diodes or power cables. Not adequate to handling the immense energies required.
Keelia: BRB two minutes
Smon: M is feeling a bit dazed but not feebleminded, no INT damage.
chris107: Two positive outcomes is cool. Mordred would have been insufferable with a 23 Intelligence
Smon: /roll d6

DESTROYERBILL: lets have a short rest shall we
Smon: The room is now hazy with smoke, there are a couple small fires in the ruins of the machine.
chris107: "A good idea. I'll try sort this mess out."
chris107: "Perhaps we should return to near the lift?"
DESTROYERBILL: lets go to the sleeping qarters of the wizard
chris107: "Lead on." M puts out the fires if he can
DESTROYERBILL: lets go to the salon its a bit scorched but it will do
DESTROYERBILL: we got hit by two fire balls in there
chris107: (Which directions please?)
Keelia: back
Smon: T leads the group back north through wardrobe room to the intersection then east. Tunnel turns n 10' to a door which opens into the burnt out ruins of a once sumptuous salon.
Smon: Salon is 30' n-s by 20' e-w with door in n wall opposite, both doors at e end of walls.
Smon: What were divans, stuffed chairs, bookshelves crammed with tomes... all Fireballed to oblivion.
chris107: "What fireballed you?"
Keelia: "Pity about the books," Bright Star comments offhandedly, examining the remains of the room
DESTROYERBILL: a wizard we killed
chris107: Mordred too is sad about the loss of books.
DESTROYERBILL: hey i have his spell book here
chris107: "Did this wizard have any spell books?"
chris107: "Ah!"
Smon: BS also finds the burned remains of a bedroll on one of the destroyed divans.
Smon: GM: You settle for a short rest.
chris107: M will take firt watch.

Smon: As Mordred is keeping guard...

Smon: The north door quietly opens, and he sees himself looking at a Small Man, about 4' tall, in simple smock.

Keelia: Bright Star is busy contemplating new thoughts but looks up at their voices.
Smon: BS & M recognise them - the creatures that were making Geo-Metry on level 2! T recognises them as the same sort of creatures he saw dead in a dormitory just north of here.
DESTROYERBILL: can i make arcana check to see if their magical
Keelia: (Are these the same small men that were drawing protective symbols?_
Smon: The Small Man looks at you with sad eyes.
Keelia: "Bright Star remembers you. You were drawing Geo-Metry!"
chris107: "Oh dear, come in. Are you okay?"
DESTROYERBILL: what happaned to you guys why so glum
Smon: The Small Men don't speak, but one turns and points north, back through the doorway.
Smon: Another takes a piece of charred wood and starts making a charcoal sketch on the floor.
chris107: "You want us to go look?"
Keelia: Bright Star moves closer to see what the sketch is.
Smon: It depicts huge bestial humanoids crushing small humanoid forms.
Smon: BS roll Nature (INT)
chris107: "The little boy, he fell down the well?"
DESTROYERBILL: can i make an insght check to see if their trying to lead us in to a trap
Keelia rolls 1d20+3 and gets: 8, (+3) = 11
DESTROYERBILL rolls 1d20+2 and gets: 6, (+2) = 8
chris107: "Some horrid monster is attacking your people? The Mountain Trolls perhaps?"
Smon: Their faces look odd, as if sculpted from rougher clay.
Smon: They shake heads at M and point to the drawing. To BS the figures look big and hairy, maybe 7' tall if the SMs are to scale at 4'.
chris107: "Bugbears!"
Keelia: Beastial Men. Gnolls? "Bright Star saw Bugbear skeletons earlier. Are these the same beastial men?"
Smon: The first SM does 5 dash lines besides the horrid brutes.
Smon: They look to M and nod.
chris107: "Five of them."
Smon: They nod again.
Keelia: "We should assist."
Smon: They nod.
chris107: (Who needs dice rolls? Mordred is smart enough without them  )
DESTROYERBILL: lets kill stuff but after we finnish are short rest
chris107: "Good thinking. That beastly machine has ruined my hair."
Keelia: "Bright Star does not require a rest, she will scout ahead."
Smon: The Small Men nod and enter the chamber, warily edging around you. They are carrying packs with smocks and drawing materials.
chris107: M settles down to rest then.
Smon: The Small Men leave via the south door as BS heads out the N door.
Smon: Out the n door a tunnel leads east, another north.
DESTROYERBILL: dont go down the east tunnel its a dead end
Smon: e tunnel runs 30' a door, n tunnel 30' to a t junction.
Keelia rolls 1d20+14 and gets: 12, (+14) = 26
Keelia: for stealth
Keelia: Can she see any patterns the small men may have left behind?
Keelia: If not, she'll head towards the door first
Smon: the door is slightly ajar - looking through bs sees a small man scaled lounge with door in east wall.
Smon: There is a silvery dispenser machine on a table like a capuccino coffee maker, with mugs on the shelf beneath.
Keelia: She pushes open the door and has a quick look around
Smon: sorry espresso machine it says
Smon: A mug lies on the floor near the machine, dried grey goop in it and spilled on the ground.
Keelia: She'll go to the door in the east wall
Smon: The east door leads to a 10' entry on to middle of a 60' long n-s passage with 3 open doors off it. All 3 lead into 20x20 small man dormitories. In the n room three small man bodies lies, arranged in dignified fashion with blankets over them.
Smon: Each room has small bunks, chests, tables and chairs.
Keelia: If there are no other doors, she'll turn back and head for the T-junction. She'll not disturb the dead Small Men.
Smon: Some of the chests are open, and contain smocks and loose trousers.
Smon: BS heads back w then n to the intersection.
Smon: At the junction she can look east - 20' tunnel to a solid door with mystic runes carved on it - and west 30' to a large chamber, a faint gleam of light from that direction. Roll per BS
Keelia rolls 1d20+8 and gets: 11, (+8) = 19
Keelia: She'll go investigate the door first - despite knowing nothing of magic, if she recognises the symbols, she can relay it back to Mordred.
Smon: BS hears the quiet, low but guttural, harsh voices from that direction (west) - several big humanoids, it sounds like.
Smon: (can roll INT (Arcana) for door)
Keelia rolls 1d20+3 and gets: 2, (+3) = 5
Keelia: for arcana
Smon: not familiar
Keelia: Ears perked, she listens to the voices. Do they sound like they are approaching?
Smon: No, they sound static.
Smon: The faint light from the west has a weird scintillating, rainbow hued tone.
Keelia: Wait a minute....Bright Star has a ring of scintillating orb - maybe it belongs to this room
Smon: Then she hears movement and a big bugbear appears at the west arch into the chamber, scanning the corridor - bs roll stealth
Keelia rolls 1d20+14 and gets: 1, (+14) = 15
Smon: lol dc 10

Keelia: too distracted by the shiny rainbow colours
Smon: BS shrinks back into the south tunnel, unspotted.
chris107:
Smon: Bugbears are stealthy but not perceptive.
Keelia: She slips back to the others to report her findings.
Smon: BS reaches the others - ok short rest completed.
Smon: /roll d6

DESTROYERBILL: it was going kill the next person it saw so we elimnated the threat
Keelia: Bright Star nods with him.
Smon: Geezer looks unsure. "Hmm. " he eyes the pool. "Never seen that before."
DESTROYERBILL: you know the tiny men thats what there made out of
Smon: The kobold crew start picking up the door remnants.
DESTROYERBILL: the door was going to destroy it all so i saved them
Smon: "The Tiny Men... oh yeah, the things the Plated Mage made! Back when he was less plated. Made them out of monkeys, I heard."
Smon: The kobolds pick up most of the debris. "We're just going to collect the weapons and such from the things you killed today, then we'll be off, right?"
DESTROYERBILL: okay
Keelia: Bright Star nods
Smon: GM: The kobolds quickly strip the 5 dead bugbears in the shimmering glyph room, then head south, collecting remaining inorganic debris from the old battle to south, shaking heads sadly at the fireballed lounge.
Smon: 20 minutes later they depart.

Smon: Nothing else appears.
Smon: Bill seems to have lost interest so call it there

3/9/48 Selatine

Talaxakan the Dragonborn Eldritch Knight is eager to explore a vast wizard's laboratory/experiment on level 3 - on a previous expedition there he got an arcane device working that seems to have greatly increased his Intelligence. Another party returned from there two days ago and reported halls channeling vast arcane energies. Also bugbears. There are also the mountain trolls on level 5 - two weeks since adventurers' attack on them, they have hopefully let down their guard. And a third more experienced party was recently down on level 9 - of 4 adventurers only the catfolk Rogue Bright Star made it back alive, but her companions should be restorable, one - Vizier Mordred - was already restored via a Wish in his Luck Blade; the others' corpses are being sent to Lady Meda of Thusia.

1-3/9/4448 BCCC, Selatine village

Mordred Midwinter, the Vizier of Selatine, known by some as the Blue Knight for his azure Avalonian complexion, has fallen in battle with an undead ice-breathing hydra on the 9th level of Stonehell Dungeon. A blood-splattered Bright Star, catfolk scout & adventurer of Selatine, returns his remains to Selatine, where they are cremated next day (2/9/48) with great honour and interred with the glorious dead. Bright Star's other fallen comrades Sandro & Danor are still able to be Raised, and are sent to Thusia with diamonds.
Mordred's decorously appointed villa is empty & available again (5000 gp & swear allegiance to Lady Vex as a Knight of Selatine).

They inter the Sword of Omens with Mordred's ashes in the Vex ancestral crypt, until such time as another pure hearted knight should arise to claim it.

Epilogue 3/9/48:
Rooting through Mordred's personal effects the day after the cremation ceremony, Bright Star finds the Luck Blade taken from the lair of the Stone Snake. It still has one last Wish.

Bright Star has given up her precious shinies repeatedly for her companions. She will gladly use the wish to bring Mordred back to life and health. She will cling to the blade and pour her full will to the wish.

As Bright Star holds the Luck Blade in Mordred's chamber and Wishes Mordred restored to full life and health, next door in the ancestral Vex crypt beneath the Temple of Apollo-Mitra, the funeral ashes swirl up from the urn... A moment later Mordred Midwinter finds himself standing there, alone, in almost total darkness, and quite naked.

Mordred is a little surprised. He summons the Sword of Omens to his hand to illuminate his morbid surroundings.

Mordred gets his sword, finds his way out of the crypt and interrupts Lady Vex preaching a sermon to a crowd of Selatine matrons. Everyone is very happy.

chris107: I'm resting level 100 Hakeem and playing a destruction wizard. Level 40 to press, 94 Destruction and nearly 1000 Magica.
Smon: That's cool, destruction wizard is one of the hardest builds in Skyrim.
chris107: Ankhegs are fierce in 1e/Osric. The 3d6 'spit' is so dangerous.
Smon: 4d8 spit, but it died before it could spit
chris107: Got him casting Destruction spells for free too. So he's a bit of a beast.
Smon: Party has 2 weapon spec Rangers & a weapon spec Ftr
chris107: 4d8?! Ouch! That would be dangerous in 5e!
chris107: They will chop most anything to bits I guess.
Smon: Yeah I saw a Youtube Skyrim video said that free casting was the way to get a destructo wizard to work.
Smon: The OSRIC 1st level Rangers with max hp have 16 hp each, more like 5th level OD&D PCs!
