chris107: So Ath, what are Tor and Hakeem set to do today?
Smon: OK, ready to start.
Smon: [Towards the end of the week Orson the Northron & co prepare to set sail, he wishes former passenger Tor Caradoc good fortune in his exploration of the Caverns of Thracia. As the Buxom Wench prepares to set sail, a second ship is spotted approaching from the north - watchers from the cliffs call out that it is Lord Hytirus Vex at the prow, returning from the Council of Lords called by Lord Vilius at Theber. And there is a woman with him...
chris107: Hakeem wanders down to watch the ship dock.
atherton: I must have missed something
atherton: we've finished with the shrine?
chris107: Yeah
chris107: Hakeem and Rey slew the fat Hobgoblin King and took all his stuff.
Smon: GM: At the docks the Buxom Wench is readying for sail. Hakeem notices 'his' wench Malenn of Mitra deep in conversation with Orson the Northron. She is nodding gravely at his words.
chris107: You got a 1/4 share
atherton: ok I'm researching rumours about the caverns
Smon: ath - subscribe to the thread so you get updates - http://www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=69676
Smon: Tor has spent the week (& equivalent of 125gp in electrum) researching.
chris107: Hakeem looks forward to giving her her freedom
Smon: Gathering info...
Smon: /roll 1d20+2
Smon rolls 1d20+2 and gets: 44, (+2) = 6
atherton: as soon as I can I'm organising a scouting party to the caverns
chris107: It will be a big + in his eyes to reinstate a Paladin of Mitra. Very good Karma.
atherton: looks like I wasn't overly successfull is doing so
atherton: nevermidn I will attempt to convince Hakeem to join me on a days outing to the ruins
chris107:
chris107: Hakeem will be happy to along as their is plenty of loot.
chris107: As long
chris107: there
chris107: bloody MAC is still changing what I type!
Smon: Tor has not been hugely successful, Selatine seems to have few sages, and Scalpy Jack's memory seems erratic at best. What he does learn is that the Beastmen have been warring on the human Deathwalkers since last year, which has depleted both. There was a Beastman night raid against Selatine last year when they stole the gold statue of Apollo from the shrine. Priestess Vex would be most grateful if it could be returned.
atherton: "rest assured noble Hakeem, the tales say that rivers of gold are concealed beneath the dusty stones"
chris107: But shouldn't we see who is coming in with lord vex first?
Smon: (don't use Macs)
atherton: "plus there is that statue of Apollo"
atherton: "imagine how our standing might improve if we could locate it"
chris107: Greedy Hakeem will join the cunning dwarf as soon as he's seen the fresh totty aririve
atherton: I guess we wait for the ship to come in then
atherton: I will gather our adventuring gear
chris107: Hakeem stands in a flattering pose. The sun glistening of his oiled muscles as the ship docks
Smon: At the docks, Hakeem & Tor are chatting amidst the crowd watching Lord Hytirus Vex'd return. At the prow, the noble lord waves to the throng, his arm round the waist of a fair-skinned, good-looking woman in red cloak, white silk loincloth and stockings, a silver pendant nestled between her bare breasts.
chris107: A silver lightning bolt?
Smon: Priestess Jana descends the steps down the cliff from the upper town to greet her returning brother.
Smon: No, Hakeem make INT check d20+0
chris107 rolls 1d20 and gets: 66,
chris107: Hakeem is not famous for brains
Smon: The priestess' garb looks familiar - a priestess of Erathis, the Nerathi name for Athena? Lord Vex leaps from the ship to shore, the gang plank is lowered and Lord Vex's companion crosses it.
Smon: Jana: "Welcome home, brother. Selatine is at your command." She bows, as do the assembled crowd. Hytirus smiles, waving.
chris107: Hakeem gives her a steady, appraising look.
Smon: Hytirus: "I bring good news! We are forming a Lords' Alliance against Yusan! The Devil Dog will have cause to tremble! And we have new allies!"
Smon: The priestess catches Hakeem's gaze, looks uncertain for a moment, draws her cloak closer about her.
chris107: His work done he wanders off feigning indifference.
Smon: Hytirus: "My companion here is the Lady Chelarre Foxwood, emissary of Neo-Nerath and Priestess of Erathis! They will aid us!"
atherton: "I'm ready to go to the caves Hakeem"
Smon: The people cheer, but Jana Vex looks highly disconcerted. "Neo-Nerath? Here?"
Smon: Hytirus' gaze darkens. "We will speak of it later. First we feast in celebration!"
Smon: The people cheer, knowing this means free food and wine.
Smon: Tor turns and follows Hakeem away from the docks.
chris107: Sounds like their will be opportunities to do war upon Yusan. Though as he is a Sword Knight Hakeem is not sure...
Smon: /roll 1d20+2
Smon rolls 1d20+2 and gets: 33, (+2) = 5
chris107: Maybe he should warn his sword-brother?
Smon: Hakeem doesn't know a lot about Yusan, just what's on the blog.
chris107:
chris107: (That's all I remembered about him from the blog. That and the picture)
Smon: (I'll do most of your checks outside of combat)
chris107: Hakeem asks Tor if he knows where these caverns full of gold are?
Smon: Chelarre Foxwood - https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj29E5u_tWIJejrJbBNd7D_g9hVQjkQome_xaAmKU1-UCSlQRQFOm_AAo910PcuQHYQEv8RJ1Hhh2awd3gXnfO-Ps4CxkM4tdd7UkkhtHmgRd_w4wL5Qe43xxWzoih8vP6dLg8ogoaNITA/s1600/Miss+Chelarre+Foxwood%2C+priestess+of+Erathis.jpg
chris107: (Cool)
atherton: "I've been asking around, I think I have a pretty good idea Hakeem"
Smon: Chelarre is joined on the dockside by a fat maid and by 4 soldiers in Nerathi garb. Hytirus leads them up towards the palace.
atherton: "but maybe we could employ Scalpy Jack to guide us there?"
Smon: Nerathi - https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0r26vysZRRXgbtOH-HM9HcRh1wVxMH1XO_-IqNds2jctsllydQY30fDhWxQuwBJ8z-xneJ1Dta7QS2AKV_cz1ApID-ytN0qxQTchJu3wcIKGzM8OGxAFhTA-KFU8LSSojIkj6rRmL9kU/s1600/Nerathi.jpg
Smon: brb 3 mins
chris107: Hakeem is happy to be off on the trail of huge treasures.
chris107: "Lead on Tor!"
atherton: we strike out on the trail we took to the shrine of St Ulthor and then continue on towards the mountains
chris107: "That half scalped cur would probably want to share in our wealth. And doesn't look like he'd be a lot of help." He grumbles.
atherton: "its an 8 mile hike Hakeem, or so they so"
atherton: say*
chris107: "Then we had better make tracks. Treasure and glory await!" He beams an empty headed smile.
atherton: we'll be marching hard, hoping to make it in about 2.5 hours
Smon: At the western gate, the guard directs you to Thracia "Just stick by the river til it goes underground, then continue west towards the cliffs. You'll be there by noon."
atherton: "nothing to do but follow his direction, Hakeem, lets go"
chris107: "See you tomorrow good guard! No doubt we shall be weighed down with gold and jewels!"
Smon: Following the directions you leave Selatine, passing fields of wheat and meadows grazed by sheep, cows and goats, watched over by youths and maids armed with slings against goblins, wolves and such.
chris107: Hakeem nods and smiles at the little chaps enthusiasm.
atherton: "patience great Hakeem, oour first foray may bring little gain"
chris107: Hakeem grins at the maids
Smon: The shepherds are accompanied by great Ghinoran sheep-hounds, as big as wolves themselves.
Smon: /roll d20+3
Smon rolls 1d20+3 and gets: 1313, (+3) = 16
atherton: "over 14 stone some of those Ghinoran hounds are Hakeem"
atherton: "I wouldn't want to tangle with one"
Smon: A pair of nubile shepherdesses half-swoon at sight of the mighty barbarian.
chris107: "Fine beasts Tor. But not as much fun as their misstresses!"
Smon: One girl saunters away from her flock, towards Hakeem. "Good morning, friend. Heading for Thracia?"
Smon: Her great hound watches protectively.
chris107: Alas Tor rushes him on to more profitable pastimes
chris107: "I sweet lady. Thacia's wealth awaits!"
chris107: "You and your hound would do well to join us."
chris107: "Share the gold and......" He smiles lasciviously
chris107: "Fair hands such as yours should have rings of gold and silver. That sweet neck should be hung with pearls..."
Smon: The girl looks Hakeem up and down, clearly interested.
chris107: (Big dog and a competent slinger can't harm our cause Athers..)
atherton: resigned, I sit down
atherton: and contemplate the clouds
Smon: "I am Aya, my hound is called Max..." she strokes the great beast's head.
chris107: Hakeem does what ever is needed to bring the girl and her huge hound into our endeavour.
Smon: Aya the shepherdess - https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8ch7ImHpLOKtF-9uM8_xukeGIz4HTkb1Rkgf89dXpM7ZojJjYQZHf7_FoScAQzJBVLxGkQaD9qYBbRbq0RdKm6oYnsXPylcTE_EMxPXdPa0sNqcX1BIIpDDpHNOX7xuvPtBdfjXZQja8/s1600/4797_16.jpg
chris107: "Come fair Aya. Bring Max and we will make you wealthy beyond your wildest dreams!"
Smon: "Your offer is entrancing, barbarian." She turns to the other, plainer girl. "Vatta, watch the flock until nightfall. I must escort this gentleman to the ruins!"
chris107: "See Tor? What fine allies we have!"
Smon: Aya. "Gold, silver, pearls..." she smiles. "But we must watch out for the beastmen." She falls in beside you, the dog following.
chris107: Off we trot full of beans
atherton: Hi hurry of back into the lead
Smon: Aya: "War has depleted their numbers, but at nightfall they are still dangerous."
chris107: "Then we slay them in clean daylight!"
Smon: GM: Leaving the meadowlands behind, you enter a forest, the Thrace river rushing by just to your north as you walk west along the trail.
Smon: The shade of the woods is pleasant in the heat of the day.
chris107: Hakeem pays Aya much flattering attention.
atherton: I'll look for camping spots as we march
chris107: Though always with a weather eye out for danger.
atherton: preferably somewhere defensible and not far from the river
Smon: Aya enjoys Hakeem's attention, casting frequent lustful gaze over his bronzed muscular form.
Smon: Campsites are plentiful in these dappled woods.
chris107: Hakeem also tries to get on Max' good side
Smon: /roll d20+5
Smon rolls 1d20+5 and gets: 99, (+5) = 14
chris107: Don't want to get bitten on the bum at an inappropriate time!
atherton: I'll simply keep the locations in mind for the present
Smon: The sheephound seems friendly enough with Hakeem, Altanians have a way with such beasts.
chris107:
atherton: still hurrying to catch site of the ruins
Smon: After a half-day's trek the forest parts to reveal great redstone cliffs rising ahead, three hundred feet high. The Thrace River cascades down falls from the top of the cliffs to the forest floor below, where the marble ruins of the lost city spread out around a central canal. A branch of the canal leads north into an expanse of swamp, which extends for miles north.
atherton: sight*
Smon: brb 2 mins
atherton: I think I better go cook dinner, a bit earlier than I was intending to
chris107: Well we got here okay Athers.
atherton: back in 30 minutes Chris
Smon: back
chris107: I'll probably be dead by then Ath but I'll have rolled up a new character in 30 mins
atherton: keep playing Tor for me, my objectives are to locate the ruins and any entrances to subterranean passages
Smon: ok
atherton: I'll dig up the ruins if need be
chris107: Hakeem will creep stealthily among the canals
chris107: Looking for signs of these scurvy beastmen
chris107: His big sword ready to be drawn at a moments notice. Barbarian senses alert.
chris107: (Secretly blessing himself for not been encumbered by armour)
Smon: Aya: "I have been here before - there are steps to the undercity in that great rotunda yonder..."
Smon: Map - https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSth_KPgipQq7V7r7Tm8fzGOxULd7RVIPhtkmjmnhEy4Lc1zeIEgWjzgSkNYbgtERtIjisYc6U-EwPLGNH9UhPYRkPPsFtXhw3pXRniyrEUc1LrWwm6FmlRQE_OJY1vfzRlHEB6nHLA_0/s1600/Thracia+city.jpg
chris107: "I knew you were a cut above Aya. Wise as well as beautiful"
chris107: The rotunda been J?
Smon: yes
chris107: Hakeem stalks like a panther towards it.
chris107: Using natural cover where he can.
Smon: Aya smiles, following Hakeem & Tor north through the trees until you are north of the plunge pool at the east end of the central canal.
Smon: What was once a great palace (J) lies in ruins, trees growing through the remains, only the outer walls still mostly intact.
chris107: Body low to the ground Hakeem flits shadowily into the ruins
Smon: A row of ruined townhouses south of the palace gives you cover as you stalk stealthily towards the central rotunda.
Smon: Even Tor is reasonably stealthy, his enchanted breastplate light and quiet.
Smon: Flies drone in the midday sun.
chris107: Any muddy ground where Hakeem can camouflage himself, Conan-like?
Smon: All seems quiet as you pad through the lost city and reach the Great Rotunda, supported by 30 alternating black & white columns.
Smon: (Mud would help only in darkness)
chris107: (Okay, he will still do the stripy combat came stuff just to look cool  )
chris107: Cammo
Smon: There is marshy ground north of the city where mud should be plentiful, but right here the ground is firm, though it looks likely to rain soon, dark rain-season clouds are forming overhead.
chris107: "Time to get inside then"
Smon: (stripy combat cammo would actually use charcoal & oil)
chris107: (If he has it in his pack he will  )
Smon: A 20' statue of a Ghinoran warrior stands outside the rotunda, spear raised.
Smon: (Reynard would have it, but not you or Tor)
chris107: Pitted and ancient or new looking?
Smon: ancient
chris107: Hakeem circles the whole place looking for signs of habitation.
Smon: Approaching the vine-wrapped rotunda, you make out obscured frescoes of the Ghinoran gods on the walls. The central area is lower, steps go down to a kind of stage - it's flat and empty.
Smon: Aya frowns. "I thought the steps were here... I'm sorry." She reddens.
chris107: "No problem lovely lass."
chris107: If no sign of lurkers are noted Hakeem will go inspect the lower central portion.
Smon: "Perhaps..." she looks around. "See that large building there, by the long lily-pools? There, I think."
Smon: Hakeem steps down into the central stage, followed by Aya.
Smon: He feels as thespians must have felt long ago, surrounded now by a ghostly crowd.
chris107: Hakeem keeps an eye on Max also. He knows the doggy is likely to sense any danger first.
Smon: Aya: "This place is very old..." she shivers, and draws closer to Hakeem, touching his shoulder.
Smon: Max stays at top of the steps, he seems unconcerned.
Smon: Tor stands nearby.
Smon: The rotunda roof sounds with raindrops as the rainstorm begins, beating down.
Smon: You are all in cover.
Smon: Hakeem knows the rain usually lasts an hour or so.
chris107: He will spend the hour searching the place for secret entrances.
chris107: Or concealed treasure!
Smon: The acoustics here are excellent, magnifying each sound.
Smon: Hakeem finds no secret doors, but clearing vines from the frescoes reveals the following images: lightning bolt, head of a mare, plumed bird, lyre, goblet, seashell, owl (symbol of Athena-Erathis), trident, skeletal finger.
chris107: Mmmmm are they painted on or carved?
Smon: Aya: "The twelve signs of the zodiac - Zeus, Demeter, Hera, Mitra-Apollo, Dionysus, Aphrodite... praise be to Aphrodite..." she smiles "Athena, Ares, Hecate..."
chris107: He touches his own lightning bolt symbol
Smon: Carved fresco. Between the trident and skeletal finger are moon, ram, spear.
chris107: Does is own god have any association with this Zeus who uses the lightning bolt?
Smon: /roll 1d20
Smon rolls 1d20 and gets: 33,
chris107: He will press and otherwise try to move or manipulate to carvings.
Smon: You don't know, but as you view the lightning insignia, you feel Inspired...
Smon: GM: Hakeem has Inspiration, can roll twice on one d20 check & take best result.
chris107:
chris107 rolls 2d20 and gets: 1515, 1414, = 29
Smon: Hakeem works on manipulating the frescoes.
chris107: If high is good I'll take the 15
Smon: Hakeem's eagle-like senses detect something(?) approaching, even as the rain drums down.
Smon: /roll 1d100
Smon rolls 1d100 and gets: 686868,
Smon: /roll 1d4+1
Smon rolls 1d4+1 and gets: 22, (+1) = 3
chris107: He spins around drawing his feersome blade with a hiss.
Smon: Hakeem spins, sees three dark figures sneaking up on you through the columns that circle the rotunda. Max spots them too, and snarls.
chris107: Hakeem leaps at them whirling his blade in an arc of death.
Smon: Three men, armed with spears and wicker shields, skin painted black & white to resemble skeletons - savage Deathwalkers!
chris107: "Death-Seekers more like! Die scum!"
Smon: They race down the steps to match Hakeem, as Max bounds forward, Tor hefts his axe, and Aya raises her sling...
Smon: /roll 1d20
Smon rolls 1d20 and gets: 2020,
Smon: roll init
chris107 rolls 1d20+2 and gets: 2020, (+2) = 22
Smon: LOL
chris107:
Smon: Hakeem alerts his allies even as his blade sweeps at the leading attacker...
chris107: Hakeem is indeed a barbarian cut from the same cloth as Conan!
Smon: Can attack. Raging?
chris107: Raging
chris107: Took the words out of my mouth
Smon: d20+5
chris107 rolls 1d20+5 and gets: 22, (+5) = 7

chris107: Good boy Max!
Smon: Max leaps onto the second Deathwalker, savaging him
Smon: /roll 2d4+2
Smon rolls 2d4+2 and gets: 22, 22, (+2) = 6
Smon: wounded but still alive.

chris107: "Well done Tor. Filthy dog stabber!"
Smon: Aya: "Max!" She lowers her sling and runs over to the hound.
Smon: Max: "*woof*" he licks at the wound.
chris107: Hakeem looks around for more foes to engage.
Smon: There's no sign of any more enemies.
Smon: Aya: "Foul cannibals! They serve Thanatos - they all deserve death!"
chris107: Hakem will give his healing potion to Max
Smon: The dog seems to recognise the red elixir, and wolfs it down.
chris107: The one Janna Vex gave him. And hope it works on the hound.
Smon: /roll 2d4+2
Smon rolls 2d4+2 and gets: 33, 33, (+2) = 8

Smon: The wound vanishes.
chris107: Hakeem likes Dogs
Smon: Aya: "Praise Mitra, the wound is healed."
Smon: Aya: "You are a mighty warrior, Hakeem." She smiles, brushing hair from her eyes flirtatiously. Tor, who killed two, rolls his eyes.
chris107: "He's a fine hound Aya and a loyal companion." Hakeem pets the noble creature.
chris107:
Smon: Max wags his tail happily.
Smon: The rain is easing off, the sun breaks through the clouds - now about 1.30pm.
atherton: sorry, burnt the fish
Smon: Aya: "I think I know where the steps can be found, if you still trust me?"
chris107: We go to the next place Aya mentioned.
Smon: (you killed 2 Deathwalkers Tor)
Smon: Leaving the rotunda, Aya leads you through the ruins.
chris107: We killed some cannibals Athers. Tor killed two!
Smon: At the western end of two long lily-pools (O on map) is a square edifice, open to the sky. Trees wave within the walls. A single entrance on the SW side.
Smon: /roll d20+2
Smon rolls 1d20+2 and gets: 66, (+2) = 8
Smon: Hakeem spots many tracks going back and forth - not human - Beastmen?
atherton: I'll lead the way in
chris107: He crouches down instinctively. Ready to fight.
atherton: how do the beastmen differ from normal humans?
Smon: They resemble the tracks of Gnolls, vicious killers who haunt the coastal Plain of Gedden south-east of Hakeem's home hills.
chris107: Hakeem flits from cover to cover
Smon: Tor INT check:
Smon: /roll d20
Smon rolls 1d20 and gets: 66,

atherton rolls 1d20 and gets: 1212,
atherton: 14 int
Smon: Pass - gnolls are vicious man-eating brutes, bigger than humans.
Smon: They are said to worship the demon lord Yeenoghu.
Smon: They ate the Empire of Nerath in the Gnoll Times, 250 years ago.
chris107: They will find that difficult without their heads
atherton: I slide inside the oblong structure
Smon: They destroyed the combined Nerathi-Altanian host on the Plain of Gedden and consumed Nerra, the capital city.
chris107: Hakeem follows
Smon: Tor and Hakeem enter...
chris107: Revenge for the fallen Albanian Hoste.
chris107: Altanian!
Smon: /roll d20+1
Smon rolls 1d20+1 and gets: 1111, (+1) = 12
Smon: GM: Inside, trees surround a 20' wide set of marble stairs descending into darkness. Murals on the ruined walls depict Zeus casting lightning bolts down upon various evildoers.
Smon: Tor's keen gaze spots something high in the trees - a gnoll! And there, and there - three in all.
Smon: The gnoll archers are drawing their bows to shoot down upon you.
atherton: are they about to jump us?
Smon: Hakeem hasn't seen them yet.
Smon: Nor has Aya.
atherton: "WATCH OUT HAKEEM"
chris107: How high in the trees?
Smon: Max growls as their scent reaches him.
atherton: "GNOLLS IN THE TREES"
chris107: Hakeem rolls for cover
atherton: I shove Hakeem into cover
