Session 32 8/2/4446 BCCC Journeying West

Lynette, ex ponygirl of Oriax, Eardvulf's squeeze
Heading west downhill the trees clear a little, and you see ruins ahead, the remains of two ancient roofless stone buildings. To their right (north) is a low cliff atop which more moonlit ruins stand.
As you draw nearer the closer of the two vine-wrapped ruins at the base of the low cliff. The nearer ruin is little more now than two walls forming an L-shape, wrapped in vines...

GAME LOG
Shambling Mound
Smon: OK, we could have your two PCs scouting ahead of the main group on your journey
Kjato Ragfoot: Yes. Delving into a dungeon with half of the group missing is probably not a good idea.
6:12pm  2015-8-28 boredom3031 Has entered the room
Smon: HI Boredom
boredom3031: Hello Simon
Hobgoblin warrior
Kjato Ragfoot: Hi Zach
Smon: I'm good.  GM: OK, the plan at last session was that the 4 PCs would escort a gaggle of slave/harem girls & Malenn & Jana Vex to Thusia, home of the good sorceress Lady Meda.
boredom3031: Hello Kjato
Smon: Are you up for that or want to do something else? I was thinking your 2 PCs could scout ahead of the main group to explain player absence.
boredom3031: Sounds good to me.
Smon: It's Hakeem that Oriax will want dead, unless he spotted Bjornalf.
Kjato Ragfoot: Well, only you know whether or not Oriax spotted Bjornalf.
boredom3031: i'm cool with whatever everyone else wants to do.
Kjato Ragfoot: Let's go and steal something valuable.
Kjato Ragfoot: Sapphires (for me) and rubies (for you).
boredom3031: I do like the red ones better.
Kjato Ragfoot: Rubies are the read ones.
boredom3031: Yep
Kjato Ragfoot: Good.
Kjato Ragfoot: We just need to figure out where to get sapphires and rubies.
boredom3031: That is true.
Smon: GM: The route to Thusia goes through Bratanis, Lady Aeschela of Bratanis is known for the largenesse of her jewels
Kjato Ragfoot: Excellent!
boredom3031: Hopefully not a double entendre.
Smon: GM: It is early afternoon when the ragtag band hurriedly departs Selatine, the slave girls carrying supplies for the journey, Malenn & the menfolk armed and ready.
Smon: For once it's not raining, a high breeze sends clouds scudding across the sky, a slight chill (by Altanian standards) in the air.
boredom3031: (Just cracked open a gaming beer. :p)
Smon: You head west; the route avoiding Oriax will take you through the ruins of Thracia, best traversed in daylight.
Smon: (me too! Abbot Ale)
Smon: (500 ml, should do me awhile)
boredom3031: (Some cheap honey brewed beer for myself.  )
Smon: /roll d6
Smon rolls 1d6 and gets: 2,
Kjato Ragfoot: (I am sipping an excellent soda)
boredom3031: Eard travels with the group. Axe in hand ready for anything that might happen.
Smon: 8 miles and 3 hours brings you through the woods to Thracia around 4pm, the waterfall sparkling in the afternoon sunlight. Are you going to head straight west through the ruins to the path up the cliffs on the western side of the city?
Kjato Ragfoot: What is the alternative?
Smon: You could skirt the southern edge of the ruins and then head north along the base of the cliff to the path up.
boredom3031: Yeah what's the other option?
Smon: There is an old marble quarry that marks the south edge of the city.
boredom3031: (What do you think, Kjato?)
Kjato Ragfoot: (Right through)
boredom3031: (Sounds good to me.  )
Smon: Thracia map - https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSth_KPgipQq7V7r7Tm8fzGOxULd7RVIPhtkmjmnhEy4Lc1zeIEgWjzgSkNYbgtERtIjisYc6U-EwPLGNH9UhPYRkPPsFtXhw3pXRniyrEUc1LrWwm6FmlRQE_OJY1vfzRlHEB6nHLA_0/s1600/Thracia+city.jpg - Q is the quarry.
Kjato Ragfoot: (I already prepared my new character, thus prepared for all eventualities :D)
Smon: Most direct route to the path south of the waterfall runs L-N-A.
boredom3031: Let's do that
Kjato Ragfoot: Yep.
Smon: L is an ancient arena with vine-covered stone stands, you pass it without incident.
boredom3031: (if this barbarian wasn't as good in alignment, I'd almost say a conan the barbarian like raid.  )
Smon: You reach N, a wide plaza where great statues of Bacchus and Poseidon still stand, surrounded by lesser statues of frolicking sea nymphs.
Smon: The central fountain is now choked with viscous green goo.
Smon: All is silent...
Smon: /roll d6
Smon rolls 1d6 and gets: 4,
Smon: You pass through the silent plaza.
boredom3031: Eard has been learning to keep his axe in hand. Never knowing when you might need it ready.
Smon: Proceeding down a street flanked by ruined buildings, you reach the base of the path and begin to climb the 300' up to the cliffs above.
boredom3031: Eard puts his axe away to start his climb.
Smon: The sounds of the forest rise up to you as you climb - shrieking monkeys, bright-plumed cawing birds, the roar of the waterfall.
Smon: /roll d6
Smon rolls 1d6 and gets: 5,
Smon: Eard is sure-footed enough, but does have to put his hand on a buxom ex-pony girl when she stumbles and threatens to fall from the narrow path...
Smon: (possibly a bit top-heavy)
boredom3031: hah
boredom3031: Eard helps the girl out
Smon: /roll d20
Smon rolls 1d20 and gets: 16,
boredom3031: (just want to show off my pool of radiance character.)
boredom3031: http://s12.postimg.org/z11g3fjgt/lol.png
Smon: The girl, now clad in blue & white polka dots, smiles gratefully. "Thanks. I'm Lynette...."
Smon: https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOnyLJ_OLgYRL06epphzkGpoU4yhBG4J40eKZytxL9ElsDNB87Ym2uQ5fduJJk641mJTdDmf68v4OWjVMRWLsWqhyBmQbb8GyrHHVb7_Vo8CRZ1xdBcWa7NyR74yDvWDVxw1cJfOuLGnM/s320/sexy-babes-in-blue-11.jpg
boredom3031: Eard smiles back to the lady and replies "You are quite welcome, I am Eard."
boredom3031: ( oh damn)
Smon: "I'm sure you are..." It's nearing 5pm when you reach the top of the cliffs and can take a moment to survey the vista, the distant ocean glinting amber in the evening light.
boredom3031: Eard visually scans the area.
Smon: Jana Vex, now dressed again in the white & gold of an Apollo priestess, speaks up. "We should press on, there is still a long way to Bratanis."
boredom3031: Eard nods to Jana, making his way without hesitation.
Smon: Looking west, you see the trail leads away from the river, up into the wild heights of the Ghinarian hills.
Smon: This time of year the hills are lush and green.
boredom3031: "What is that way?" Eard asks.
Smon: Jana points to the trail running west-south-west into the hills. You press on as evening turns to dusk and dusk to night.
Smon: The slave girls are soon complaining of sore feet.
boredom3031: "Better than sore knees right now." Eard replies, continuing on.
Smon: You have travelled about 5 miles, and it is around 7.30pm, an hour after nightfall, when you top a rise and see to the west the land leading down to the valley of the Thrace river, and the distant lights of Bratanis twinkling, some 5 miles away. However the trail you are on leads away south-west on a much longer route.
boredom3031: (kjato, pass out on us?)
Kjato Ragfoot: (No, I am still here)
Smon: It looks as if you could head downhill through a mile or so of rough wooded hill country to the lush valley, then follow the river up to Bratanis. Alternately you could stay on this trail, many more miles as it loops round through the hills.
Kjato Ragfoot: Let's rest for now, before we get lost in the dark.
Kjato Ragfoot: I vote river.
boredom3031: Me too, lets follow the river.
Smon: Jana. "I don't wish to spend a night out here... Bjornalf and Eardvulf, could you scout ahead, watch out for danger before we reach the river?"
boredom3031: Eard nods immediately, readying his axe. And sets off to do as Jana asked.
Kjato Ragfoot: The sooner we reach the river, the better.
Smon: GM: You head downhill, with no trail beyond rabbit-tracks the trek through the darkling woods is slow, with frequent pauses to reorient.
boredom3031: Eard visually scans the area to see if there's anything that needs slaughtered.
Smon: Make a perception check Eardvulf.
boredom3031 rolls 1d20 and gets: 12,
Smon: Heading west downhill the trees clear a little, and you see ruins ahead, the remains of two ancient roofless stone buildings. To their right (north) is a low cliff atop which more moonlit ruins stand.
Kjato Ragfoot: Hmm. On the one hand, ruins offer shelter. On the other hand, ruins harbour danger..
Smon: As you draw nearer the closer of the two vine-wrapped ruins at the base of the low cliff, Eardvulf's sharp eyes pick up movement from within...
Smon: The nearer ruin is little more now than two walls forming an L-shape, wrapped in vines.
boredom3031: Eard readies his axe, and approaches the direction the movement comes from.
Smon: With a shock, Eardvulf sees that the movement he detected comes from the vines themselves!
boredom3031: Oh shit.
Smon: Slowly they rise up into the grotesque form of a great, semi-humanoid body, the legendary Shambling Mound!
boredom3031: Eard gets into stance with his axe. Waiting to see what the mound will do.
Smon: It lurches towards you... Actions? You're about 30' away.
Kjato Ragfoot: Bjornalf will BLIGHT the creature, eager to test his newly learnt spell.
boredom3031: Eard sees it is is approaching, stepping back a bit. Giving Bjorn space.
Smon: OOC Zach your PC sheet here with Barb abilities - http://smons.blogspot.co.uk/2015/05/5egh-zach-pc-eardvulf-barbarian-of.html
Smon: As it lumbers towards you, Bjornalf casts Blight.
boredom3031: (Thank you simon.  )
Smon: The Mound saves with Disadvantage vs Blight...
boredom3031: (Noticed he sort of looks like a barbarian Danzig. lol)
Smon: /roll d20+3x2
Smon Rolls 1d20+3x2 and gets:
14 (+3) = 17
12 (+3) = 15
Smon: heh
boredom3031: Damn
Kjato Ragfoot: Still, 32 damage.
Smon: DC 15, so it resists, browning for a mere 32 dmg.
boredom3031: Eard rushes the mound next with his axe (next chance he gets)
Smon: Roll init
boredom3031 rolls 1d6 and gets: 3,
Smon: /roll d20-1
Smon rolls 1d20-1 and gets: 3, (-1) = 2
Smon: d20
Kjato Ragfoot rolls 1d20+2 and gets: 1, (+2) = 3
boredom3031: Oops, used to 1E. lol
boredom3031 rolls 1d20 and gets: 4,
Smon: You both win, despite appalling rolls all round.
Kjato Ragfoot: Wow, that must be a lot of stumbling in the dark...
boredom3031: lol
boredom3031: lol
boredom3031 rolls 1d20+2 and gets: 15, (+2) = 17
Smon: Eardvulf can Rage and attack.
boredom3031: Will save my rage for now.
boredom3031 rolls 1d20+2 and gets: 10, (+2) = 12
Smon: (you have lots of Rage, save the Berserk though). 2 attacks at +7, both hit its AC 15
boredom3031: Ah ok
boredom3031: And eard is 2 handing
Smon: d10+6 then x2
Smon: hackety hack...
boredom3031 rolls 1d10+6 and gets: 9, (+6) = 15
boredom3031 rolls 1d10+6 and gets: 10, (+6) = 16
boredom3031:
Smon: 31 dmg!
Smon: Bjornalf can act as it turns to grab the barbarian pruning it...
Kjato Ragfoot: I blight it again.
boredom3031:
Smon: saves
Kjato Ragfoot: "May the Water's grace forever leave you, foul monster!"
Smon: /roll d20+3x2
Smon Rolls 1d20+3x2 and gets:
11 (+3) = 14
17 (+3) = 20
Smon: yaaay
boredom3031: Damn
Smon: DC 15, it fails by 1!
Kjato Ragfoot: You said it was DC 15, so it failed?
Kjato Ragfoot: Woohoo!
Smon: It takes 64 dmg, going all black and yucky
Kjato Ragfoot: Rot, shambler, rot!
boredom3031: Hell yeah
Smon: The Blighted monster attacks Eardvulf...
Smon: /roll d20+7x2
Smon Rolls 1d20+7x2 and gets:
9 (+7) = 16
4 (+7) = 11
Smon: Eard fends off one 'arm', but is struck by the other.
Smon: /roll 2d8+4
Smon rolls 2d8+4 and gets: 8, 7, (+4) = 19
boredom3031: Daaaaaamn
Smon: 19 dmg, halved by Rage though = 9 dmg
Smon: Your go
boredom3031 rolls 1d20+7 and gets: 1, (+7) = 8
boredom3031:
boredom3031 rolls 1d20+7 and gets: 8, (+7) = 15
Smon: Behind you you hear the clumsy sounds of your approaching coterie.
Kjato Ragfoot: Bjornalf draws his weapon, gets close to the monster and tries to Cause Fear (with Fey presence) on the monster.
Smon: They emerge from the woods just in time to see Eardvulf hack through rotten greenery into the brute's central root-stem...
Smon: d10+6, roll high!
boredom3031 rolls 1d10+6 and gets: 8, (+6) = 14
boredom3031: Not too shabby
Smon: As Eardvulf severs the root-stem the monster collapses, writhing.
Smon: Lynette claps delightedly at the sight of her barbarian hero victorious. Hakeem's paladin wife Malenn nods. "Good work Eardvulf!"
Smon: The writhing swiftly stops, the Mound apparently dead.
boredom3031: Eard relaxes as he watches the mound die, turning his head to lynette, smirking. "Thank you, Dear." He replies.
Smon: /roll d20
Smon rolls 1d20 and gets: 5,
Kjato Ragfoot: (opportunist!)
boredom3031: (lol_
boredom3031: )
Smon: Bjornalf has heard that often these things return, unless burned out with fire.
Smon: Lynette smiles back and waves, Jana Vex rolls her eyes, surveying the ruins.
Kjato Ragfoot: Well. Let's make camp and use the remains as camp fire.
boredom3031: ( xD )
boredom3031: Eard nods to Kjato in agreement.
Smon: The ruins below the cliff don't look as if they will give much shelter. Just north of the western ruin, in which a large tree grows, is a dark carved recess, possibly an entryway into the cliffs.
boredom3031: Bjorn
boredom3031: oops
Kjato Ragfoot: To Lynette: You have no idea how difficult it was to set this occasion up so perfectly that Eard kills the mound the exact moment you arrive!
Smon: Then you see that the dead Mound was lying on what appears to be an ancient trapdoor in the east ruin.
Smon: /roll d20
boredom3031: "No one need worry, I had it all under control."
Smon rolls 1d20 and gets: 6,
Smon: Lynette seems unimpressed by Bjornalf's explanation.
boredom3031:
Kjato Ragfoot: Oh. A trap door. Maybe we can seek shelter in the cellar beneath.
Smon: The trap door shows signs of recent use, despite having been under the Mound. A brass ring to pull it up is visible.
boredom3031: I'd prefer up top. Eard replies. "We have space here in case anything is down there."
Kjato Ragfoot: Whispers to Eard: "Now, take advantage of it and get to know Lynette better"
Smon: Malenn: "Hmm, someone - or something - has raised this recently."
Smon: /roll d20
Smon rolls 1d20 and gets: 17,
boredom3031: Eard smirks to Bjorn and nods to him quietly, trying to not let the others in on what's being said.
Smon: Jana Vex: "Bratanis has been troubled recently by Hobgoblins... could this be their lair?"
Kjato Ragfoot: Bjornalf will inspect the door more closely.
boredom3031: "Yeah lets rest up here in open space if we're going to rest."
Smon: The trap door is old and somewhat decreipt, clearly having been in the open for many years, but the hard wood is still largely intact.
Smon: /roll d20
Smon rolls 1d20 and gets: 9,
Kjato Ragfoot: If we make our camp fire right over the trap door, it is rather unlikely any hobgoblin is going to get out.
Smon: There are some dead leaves shed by the shambling mound scattered about.
boredom3031: "Yes, so better up here, rather than down in there."
Smon: Malenn nods. "We can start a fire with these dry leaves..."
Smon: GM: Jana nods reluctantly, you settle down to camp in the shelter of the L-shaped wall, setting a fire right over the trapdoor.
boredom3031: Eard will take first watch while the others rest.
Smon: You eat your dinner, throwing bits of Mound on the smokey fire. Then Hakeem and Rey go off to scout the nearby woods for dangers while Eardvulf stands guard.
boredom3031: Eard might try to strike up some convo with Lynette.
Smon: Lynette comes over to Eardvulf with a come-hither look, while most of the others drift off to sleep. What is Bjornalf doing?
Kjato Ragfoot: Bjornalf is going to sleep.
Smon: Bjornalf drifts off to sleep, dreaming of the sea...
boredom3031: Eard smiles, doing as he is asked.
Smon: An hour later - the sounds of lovemaking drift across the sleeping camp as Eardvulf gets intimate with the buxom slave girl...
Smon: /roll d20
7:32pm  2015-8-28 Smon Has exited the room
7:32pm  2015-8-28 Smon Has entered the room
Smon: Smon: An hour later - the sounds of lovemaking drift across the sleeping camp as Eardvulf gets intimate with the buxom slave girl...
boredom3031: (Wb.  )
Smon: /roll d20
Smon rolls 1d20 and gets: 20,
Smon: lucky
boredom3031:  He should wake up quite happy. lol
Kjato Ragfoot: (What was that d20 roll for?=
Smon: Eardvulf might appear distracted by Lynette's ample charms, but his razor-sharp barbarian senses stand him in good stead as a twig cracks in the darkness east of the campfire light.
Smon: Someone is trying to sneak up on the camp...
Smon: More sounds - boots, trying to move silently in the darkness... several of them...
boredom3031: Eard whispers to the lady to get a safe distance, grabbing his axe, and he looks to the direction of the sound.
Smon: /roll d20
Smon rolls 1d20 and gets: 10,
boredom3031: Eard shouts to wake the others up as he approaches the sounds.
Smon: GM: Eardvulf tumbles off Lynette, grabbing his axe and yelling. Eight armoured forms emerge from the darkness, weapons drawn - Hobgoblins!
Smon: GM: Eardvulf is charging them?
boredom3031: Yeah
boredom3031: Double handing again.
Smon: ok, Eardvulf roll init
boredom3031 rolls 1d20 and gets: 9,
Smon: /roll d20+1
Smon rolls 1d20+1 and gets: 19, (+1) = 20
boredom3031: damn
Smon: The hobgoblins close formation and ready their blades as he attacks... 3 can attack, 2 regulars and their captain
Kjato Ragfoot: (Tell me when Bjornalf wakes)
Smon: (They Ready, You Rage & Charge, they attack then you)
Smon: Regulars:
Smon: /roll d20+3x2
Smon Rolls 1d20+3x2 and gets:
10 (+3) = 13
14 (+3) = 17
Smon: ouch
boredom3031: Damn
Smon: I'm going to use the default damage listings, so 12x2=24. halved for Rage = 12.
boredom3031: Thank you.
Smon: You would have Short Rested already though so could have spent a healing die, roll d12+3
boredom3031 rolls 1d12+3 and gets: 7, (+3) = 10
boredom3031: Nice
Smon: ok, you were at full, now 12 below
boredom3031:

Smon Rolls 1d20+4x2 and gets:
18 (+4) = 22
14 (+4) = 18
Smon: 28 dmg/2=14
Smon: Are you attacking the leader or the grunts?
boredom3031: leader first.
Smon: He has plate & greatsword, they have chain shield & sword
Smon: ok, AC 17, you get 2 atts, roll now
boredom3031 rolls 1d20+7 and gets: 13, (+7) = 20

boredom3031:
Smon:
boredom3031 rolls 1d10+6 and gets: 8, (+6) = 14
boredom3031 rolls 1d10+6 and gets: 7, (+6) = 13
Smon: 27 dmg! The hobgob spits blood, yelling an order: "Kill this one!"
boredom3031:
Smon: Bjornalf is awake and on his feet, Malenn also rises, drawing steel.
boredom3031: Eard replies "Try your best."
Smon: Bjornalf roll init.
Kjato Ragfoot rolls 1d20+2 and gets: 12, (+2) = 14
Smon: Nearby in the darkness you hear Hakeem's battle cry - it seems he and Rey have found more enemies...
Smon: hobs on 20, so they go first.
Kjato Ragfoot: (Remember: I can see in the dark, at least for a short distance)
boredom3031: Eard thinks to himself "Cousin must have found some also."
Smon: The commander barks expert orders to his 'men', giving them all +2 to attacks & saves...
Smon: The slave girls scream and flee in fear.
boredom3031: (Time for another beer.  )
Smon: Malenn closes with two, two more charge Bjornalf while the leader and three more attack Eardvulf.
Smon: Two on Bjornalf:
Smon: /roll d20+5x2
Smon Rolls 1d20+5x2 and gets:

boredom3031: I will do so.
Smon: sorry, 12 dmg to Bjornalf
Kjato Ragfoot: Bjornalfs dissolves into mist and reappears (invisibly) on top of some ruined wall.
Smon: The hobs gasp as Bjornalf turns to mist and appears atop the ruined wall. 3 regulars attack Eardvulf:
Smon: /roll d20+5x3
Smon Rolls 1d20+5x3 and gets:
8 (+5) = 13
8 (+5) = 13
10 (+5) = 15

Smon: Eard can attack
Smon: 3 attacks as berserk
boredom3031: He is beserking so 3 attacks?
Kjato Ragfoot: Bjornalf will try to Fairy Fire as many hobgoblins as he can.
Smon: good luck!
boredom3031 rolls 1d20+7 and gets: 7, (+7) = 14
boredom3031 rolls 1d20+7 and gets: 16, (+7) = 23

Smon:
boredom3031 rolls 1d10+6 and gets: 6, (+6) = 12
boredom3031:
Smon: Eard cuts through the enemy leader and cleaves into a hobgoblin grunt, who also falls dying.
Smon: nice
boredom3031:
Smon: Bjornalf casts Fairy Fire, you can get d4+1 hobs I'll say.
Smon: /roll d4+1
Smon rolls 1d4+1 and gets: 1, (+1) = 2
Kjato Ragfoot: That would be the two that attacked me.
Kjato Ragfoot: "Show yourself, cowards!"
Smon: just 2 then, otherwise you'd catch Malenn & Eard too
Smon: brb
boredom3031: ok
Smon: My son demanded I help him with his choice of mercenary hirelings in the Mentzer Expert blue book - chip off the old block.
Smon: DEX saves for hobs
boredom3031: Hell yeah.
Kjato Ragfoot: Always hire a group of sailors, lead by Captain Haddock.
boredom3031: Hope my kids are like that.
