24/11/48 L1 Alvariel Sandro & Bright Star in the Quiet Halls (933 XP)

joriandrake: sidenote: Alv helped Danor and learned language with Bright Star as earlier, for this quest I don't change currently memorized spells, might suggest to Sandro to ask the surviving bugbear from the adventure with Danor to maybe join us on the highest, level 1 floor (or ground level?)

Smon: You head down the corridor east from the Efah-Soom teleporter room, passing open doors into looted chambers. Ahead you see a side tunnel to the left/north, and just past it a stone crypt door in the south wall. The tunnel continues east beyond.
Smon: That bugbear ran off & you didn't see her again.
joriandrake: Alvariel inspects the tunnel, scribbles some notes in his papers then casts Mage Armor on himself (oh well, at least we didn't have to pay her then)

joriandrake: "I have no idea which part of the level is actually left unexplored so lead the way good monk"
Smon: You reach the intersection. Looking left/north you see the tunnel runs north 30' then opens into a huge pillared chamber, the columns inscribed with bone pattern; fallen masonry; bats flutter above; rusty gong hangs between the southernmost columns 10' from the entrance.

Smon: With a slight shock you realise numerous human-sized figures stand unmoving in the great hall.
joriandrake: "A gong? Used to warn of enemies, a dinner gong, perhaps one for ceremonies?" The wizard muses when he notices the unmoving figures
Smon: To your east the east tunnel continues 60', passing doors to n & s, before ending at an archway into a chamber at the edge of your darkvision.
Smon: Looking north into the great hall you also see scattered fallen masonry on the floor.
sandor sunneson: what you think Jorian? Go and explore in the great hall and the human figures?
joriandrake: "I barely take out an archway and a chamber in the east beyond two doors to north and south, and there is damaged stonework the great hall to the north"
joriandrake: "We might ttry the hall first, we might have to pass through the figures here anyway"

Past the rusty gong you get a good view of the Hall - High (30)‘ ceiling, columns inscribed with bone pattern; fallen masonry; bats flutter above; rusty gong between southernmost columns. The hall is 50' e-w and 90' n-s, you can barely see the north wall. There are 2 exits in w wall, 2 in e wall, 1 in n wall. Around the chamber stand nearly a score of skeletons & zombies in tattered grave clothes. They turn in your direction...

Smon: You reach the intersection. Looking left/north you see the tunnel runs north 30' then opens into a huge pillared chamber, the columns inscribed with bone pattern; fallen masonry; bats flutter above; rusty gong hangs between the southernmost columns 10' from the entrance.

Smon: With a slight shock you realise numerous human-sized figures stand unmoving in the great hall.

Smon: It runs east 40' before opening into a chamber. There is a carved archway in the n wall of the tunnel after 20'. Sniffing the air, Star detects a slight sulphourous tang from the tunnel.

Smon: GM: You head 20' down the e tunnel to the archway, carved with images of devils. Looking through you see a 20x30 chamber with matching arch in n wall. Devils are carved in high relief on walls; faint odor of brimstone you can all smell; empty censers hanging on hooks; old bloodstains on the floor.
Smon: To the east Alvariel senses strong magic.

Keelia: Bright Star draws her bow again.
Smon: Looking east 20' into the east chamber you see many ancient Altani (Egyptian style) sarcophagi arrayed upright round the walls, and directly opposite you what appears to be a gigantic pair of scales, big enough for a man to climb into. The aura of magic comes from the scales.

Smon: You cautiously approach the Sarcophagi Chamber:Stone sarcophagi (20) standing upright; hieroglyphics on walls; empty torch sconces; giant (15‘ tall) pair of stone merchant scales. The chamber is about 30' e-w by 40' n-s, with exit tunnels in middle of s wall and w end of n wall.

Smon: There are lots of foot prints from the north, looks like an adventurer party came in that way & left same way. By accounts the north part of the Quiet Halls has been explored so loot likely taken. Bright Star remembers reports from Blue, a Tabaxi adventurer from a year or so back, he saved his friend who was killed by ghouls in a chamber like this. It might have been Nemesis the amazon who attracted the ghouls.

Smon: GM: From the obelisk chamber the west tunnel leads 40' past the n end of the sulphur/devil room back into the great hall. The n tunnel leads to looted chambers, scattered gnawed bones, no loot. So only the remaining southern chambers to explore...
joriandrake: "So, to the chamber with the chest where I detected magic before it got dispelled?"

joriandrake: oh damn, Alv casts Magic Armor on himself again, as I guess that is gone too

Smon: It is square, 30x30, with an exit to west that likely is the main corridor that leads back to the Efah-Soom and out of Stonehell. Raised dais is 2‘ tall, 10‘ dia. in center of room; stone chest on dais; weird flickering black-purple flames crawl across the floor & walls.

Smon: Sandro has heard of Balefire too. Balefire is a cold, blackish-purple flame of supernatural origin. Balefire flickers into appearance, crawls across the floor and walls, and then vanishes. It appears randomly and without warning, and only affects living creatures. Magical protections against cold provide some defense.
Smon: Alvariel explains this - it is not too uncommon in ancient crypts in the far north, but he has never heard of it in these southern lands before.
Smon: Alvariel knows that it burns but probably not immediately lethal. It can be warded by holy water.
joriandrake: "Interesting find, there might be a connection between this place and the northern lands"
Keelia: like the holy water we have in the bag?
joriandrake: "Also, we can use holy water to ward from it... and that reminds me we know a place to get holy water from"
Smon: If you want to reach the chest on the daid you will risk getting burned.
Smon: Yes you have holy water.
joriandrake: "Hm, it might be wise to only let Bright Star go to the Chest and use holy water on her alone"

13/11/48 Sepulture of the Kion - Level 6

Exploring the Sepulchre of the Kion... (by Judith/Tuzhna)

Through the secret door down to L6. The Vrilya describe the Kion as 8' tall lupine creatures with 4 arms. Whole area appears to be covered in distinctive geometric hexagonal motifs.

First room contains several floating glass cylinders. Talaxakan smashes one and reveals a mummified Kion. A few seconds later three floating ceramic eyeball constructs attack.

Continuing, rooms and corridors are large and well made. Inside a ziggurat decorated with abstract serpentine designs we find an undead hydra which is destroyed.

Another room looks like a charging station for the floating eyeball guards. Many of the eyeball docks are empty - have they been destroyed or are they patrolling?

Confusia the Warlock is nearly killed entering a room inhabited by two mummies which are destroyed by Talaxakan and Rhode.

Smon: The shade of Magrathor, the Sterling Potentate, who built Stonehell - Heltharn & her surviving companion Featherblade the Altanian fled from Magrathor after he killed their elven wizardess companion with a single touch, then brought her back as a spectre under his command.

The dwarf minion leads you to the stairs from level 1 Quiet Halls down to the level 2 temple of Yig, former lizardman domain, and from there to the elevator down to level 3. From there he leads you east to a great hall with many 4' wide lenses arrayed in rows, east into a mazy labyrinth of smooth stone walls, avoiding various glyphs, to a teleporter glyph. He explains that stepping onto the glyph will take you to Magrathor's lair.
Smon: Dwarf: "Mistress Heltharn told me to wait here for your return. Good luck."

Smon: The dwarf looks to Danor for support. "The Wraith King will kill me and bring me back to fight you, she said."
Smon: "Hope those bugbears of yours don't meet the same fate."

Smon: You find yourselves on a raised circular platform (10' wide & 1‘ high) covered with a mosaic of mystical formulae in the center of a room 30x30, heavy double doors in the north wall. The bugbears are just stepping off the platform.

Smon: The ancient double doors are of dark oak bound with iron, almost no dust. The air here is dry. Almost no dust on the floor.

Human courtiers in archaic Nerathi noble guard are standing and talking in the space before the throne, while numerous platemail-clad men-at-arms stand guard around the walls.
Smon: None of them pay any attention to your appearance.
joriandrake: "Oh boy, an undead throne room"

Smon: As well as the two doors behind the raised dais you see a side door at the east wall of the throneroom, which is about 50' e-w.
joriandrake: Alvariel very worried these might 'activate' just like the golems in that other room
Smon: They look like regular Alryan-Nerathi humans, though their garb is 3 centuries out of fashion.

Smon: Although the courtiers appear to be talking, you cannot make out any distinct words.
joriandrake: "Perhaps spirits, or just visual echoes"
joriandrake: "I'm more worried about the armoured guards at the walls"

Smon: 2 behind dais on n wall in alcoves to at w and e of the throne. 1 door at ground level in e wall - emanating evil.
joriandrake: "Hm"... "We might just as well try the throne, we are now here, if any attacks occur when we sit on it at least we clear out the room before we moved on"
joriandrake: Alvariel fancies the purple cushions

joriandrake: Actually yes, the wizard begins the ritual, bneing in a researcher's room makes it more logical to cast Detect Magic anyway

Smon: Must be over 2,000 gp worth of reagants & other research materials here, about 100 lb in weight.
joriandrake: After the ritual Alvariel checks for active magic to avoid more traps or find magical items, the asks Danor if the bugbears could pack up the whole 100lb materials to bring with them "They are big, strong guys, I think they can easily handle it"

Smon: Danor opens the west door on the south wall of the lab. It opens into a dimly lit chamber with black floor tiling, the walls lined with shelves holding hundreds of grimoires. The library is 30x30 with the SE wall canted SW to NE, matching the NW wall of the throneroom west of the dais - it must be adjacent.
JamesDevil: we'll check the next door with a rit cast detect magic, that will help
Smon: Alvariel is still running Det Magic?
joriandrake: The wizard warns Danor of the enchantment he senses

Smon: With his limited knowledge of Abyssal script Alvariel can make out some of the words - "Al Azif" - "Necronomicon" "De Vermiis Mysteriis"
joriandrake: "oh, I think this is what one would call 'jackpot' -he remarks, and places the book back
joriandrake: "We can come back for these later, they are worth a small fortune I believe, but the language most are written in I didn't fullyl earn yet, so it can wait"
