+soil-britched Orc captured

Pre-dawn, 29/2/4447.
Hakeem, Ursa, Sandor, Ajax & the NPC Amazons Artemisia & Bricis are about to raid the likely orc outpost at Khundrakar, the 'Forge of Fury' (2633) below the Stone Tooth on the eastern Castellan slopes, 15 miles SW of Highhaven.

Your group of six is currently on the narrow path that winds east 50 yards up to A, a deep cleft in the rock that likely gives access to the dwarf hold's gate. About 100 yards to the east at B Ursa spotted a smoke trail rising from the crags, either a chimney or hidden camp. D is the barren top of the Stone Tooth, a jagged spike towering some 1450' above the surrounding terrain. To the east at E the eastern slopes of the Tooth descend to a dark tarn lake.

Smon: Evening chris
chris107: Evening Simon
Smon: I rem Fergus said he should be here ca 7.30
chris107: cool
Smon: I'm bbqing a steak but I thought I'd start shortly, take it fairly easy till Fergus gets here
chris107: That works for me. Perfect evening for a BBQ.
Smon: Hopefully Hakeem & Ursa can survive, until then I'll say Sandor & Ajax guarding the rear.
Smon: Lovely weather - just been on the local green reading the adventure on the grass.
chris107: Sandor the wolf will be amazing this evening.
chris107: Sounds grand!
Smon: yup Sandor beside Hakeem hasted by Ajax v handy...
chris107: Hakeem and Ursa on either side, both getting advantage through his pack tactics should be awdome!
chris107: Oh yes, the Haste too!
chris107: Hasted with advantage. Formidable.
Smon: Bill won butter beans at the school fair last week - they're surprisingly good with steak
Smon: Just about to get steak off the grill...
chris107: Yum!
chris107: No rush.
chris107: Kyle working until about 9.30
Smon: That's one tasty steak sandwich
chris107: I am a big steak fan.
Smon: gm - last session http://smons.blogspot.co.uk/2017/07/session-121-182-2924447-hakeem-ajax-to.html
chris107: Thanks.
Smon: >>GM: It looks like the dwarf-built path winds up NE to a bare shoulder of rock then turns into a deep cleft in the hillside. chris107: Hakeem, fresh from the forge himself would also be interested to meet such a fellow. chris107: Ursa will creep forward with his darkvision to scout. Smon: You don't see any sign of observation and the night is still dark, though pre-dawn is beginning to lighten the eastern sky, as Ursa creeps forward, alert for sentries. Smon: Make a WIS+Prof check Ursa. chris107 rolls 1d20+5 and gets: 13, (+5) = 18 Smon: Ursa's darkvision picks up the faint heat-glow of a thin smoke trail rising high upslope to the south-east - a chimney? Smon: The orcs are likely cooking at night, thinking the smoke will be unseen by any amazon scouts. chris107: He strains to hear any sounds. chris107 rolls 1d20+5 and gets: 4, (+5) = 9 Smon: Only sound is the wind, blowing the smoke NE. chris107: He creeps back to tell of his findings.<<
chris107: Ursa will whisper what he say to Hakeem and the rest. Sketching out mentaly what he's seen.
chris107: Is it light enough yet for the humans to see?
Smon: Artemisia: "The smoke may indicate a chimney - but a hot entrance... I suggest go on to the cleft Ursa, see if you can find a way in. Watch out for sentries!"
chris107: Ursa nods and once more creeps off into the darkness.
Smon: It's still pre-dawn, human vision is limited, but Artemisia wants to attack before the sun comes up.
chris107: He keeps to what shadows he can.
chris107: Listening at intervals for sounds of danger.
Smon: Ursa slips across the rocks and enters the cleft, a deep ravine with trail on the right side. The hillside rises steeply on your right and drops away precipitously on your left. Debris and rubbish lie scattered over the last hundred yards or so-discarded water skins, bits of charred bone, and splintered casks or kegs. Up ahead, the path opens onto a wide ledge and then doubles back sharply into the mountainside. Two bestial humanoids in hide armor stand watch on the ledge. They appear inattentive and bored.
Smon: Make a Stealth DEX+prof check Ursa
chris107 rolls 1d20+4 and gets: 14, (+4) = 18
Smon: The orcs haven't spotted you.
chris107: OOC isn't there a shove action in 5e?
Smon: They are standing guard where the /\ shaped path widens at the apex before doubling back se into the mountainside.
Smon: Yup, bull rush.
chris107: How high does the ledge they are on seem to be?
Smon: It's a STR check so raging Barbs have advtg!
chris107: Could Ursa use his Bear's Strength ability to shove the two lax sentries into the ravine?
Smon: The ledge is maybe 100' above the ravine floor far below.
chris107: Rather than rage.
Smon: Yeah, but your chance of success is much higher raging.
chris107: Advantage on Strength check that way?
Smon: no, it's not a lift/carry thing.
chris107: ah, okay.
chris107: Then I think it's worth a rage.
chris107: Ursa draws in his rage then pounces! Trying to push the two creatures clear over the edge!
Smon: Ursa barrels forward at the nearest orc... you have Surprise, roll init (w advtg) but they can't act r1
chris107: Strength check with advantage?
Smon: /roll d20+2
Smon rolls 1d20+2 and gets: 10, (+2) = 12
chris107 Rolls 1d20+1x2 and gets:
9 (+1) = 10
6 (+1) = 7
Smon: The orcs have time to yelp as Ursa charges the nearest...
Smon: roll Athletics (STR+prof) w advtg, x2
Smon: /roll d20+3x2
Smon Rolls 1d20+3x2 and gets:
14 (+3) = 17
7 (+3) = 10
chris107 Rolls 1d20+5x2 and gets:
13 (+5) = 18
5 (+5) = 10
Smon: The first orc screams as Ursa sends it flying off the ledge to its doom, he aims at the second...
Smon: roll 2nd attack (STR+Profx2)
chris107 Rolls 1d20+5x2 and gets:
7 (+5) = 12
18 (+5) = 23
Smon: The second orc joins its comrade plummeting a hundred feet to the jagged rocks below.
chris107:
chris107: Ursa slips into any nearby shadows and listens to see if this was heard.
Smon: What's Ursa's perception?
chris107: He h prof.as a wisdom of 14 and a +3
chris107: Not sure how perception is woked out?
Smon: 10+WIS+Prof = 15, exactly made it thanks to your great wisdom Ursa
chris107:
Smon: You notice the dwarf-made arrow slits overlooking the apex of the trail from 15' above, where it turns SE into a cleft in the rock.
chris107: There was no point trying to out Hakeem, Hakeem. Wisdom for saves as a Bearbarian seemed more appropriate than strength.
Smon: Running SE the trail ascends two flights of mossy stone steps to an open landing/courtyard it looks like, overlooked by rock on all sides.
Smon: /roll d20
Smon rolls 1d20 and gets: 4,
chris107: He will flatten himself against the wall, so that only someone looking directly down from the slit would see him and sneak to the SE cleft.
Smon: Ursa flattens himself beneath the slits (smart move) and sneaks SE up the steps.
Smon: Above the sky is lightening, but it's still very dark down here.
chris107: Ursa is smarter than the average bear.
Smon: Shallow steps lead up through a steep fissure to the south and turn east into the mountainside. Here, a broad entranceway has been carved out of the stone. Marble steps cracked with age and veined with green moss lead up to a strong double door of carved stone, eight feet wide and almost ten feet tall. Arrow slits high on the north and south walls command this area.
chris107: The doors are shut?
Smon: At the top of the steps Ursa can see a sturdy dwarf-built set of double doors on the east side of the courtyard. They appear to be slightly ajar...
chris107: Any sign of movement from within that he can see?
Smon: A broad set of steps splits this 40x30 courtyard N-S, overlooked by arrowslits to N and S covering the top of the stairs.
chris107: Also, how far does he estimate he has travelled from his friends? Would the sound of battle reach them he wonders?
Smon: There's just darkness past the doors.
Smon: No, you're too far from your allies.
chris107: drat.
Smon: With a lot of rock in the way.
chris107: Then he retraces his steps, taking all precautions not to be noticed.
chris107: (I had visions of Ursa gallantly holding the door until his friends arrived  )
Smon: Ursa sneaks back - he has to cross the path within view of the ominoud arrowslits - make a stealth check w advtg.
chris107 Rolls 1d20+4x2 and gets:
16 (+4) = 20
3 (+4) = 7
Smon: Ursa returns safely to his companions a few minutes away down the mountainside.
Smon: It's nearly dawn now.
Smon: Artemisia: "I say we rush the door, Hakeem to the fore. Overwhelm them swiftly, before they can ready."
chris107: He quickly explains and suggests that he and Hakeem sneak up to take the gate house. The rest to follow 5 minutes behind.
chris107: But he bows to Artemisia's wisdom.
Smon: Bricis nods. "A sound plan, friend dwarf."
chris107: He looks at Artemisia for confirmation.
Smon: Artemisia: "Orcs are strong archers - I don't want to be stuck beneath those arrow slits, Bricis. Safest place for us is beyond those gates."
Smon: She turns to Ursa: "We'll be right behind you. Lead on."
Smon: GM: Are you going to try to sneak up, or rush up?
chris107: Ursa once more creepsoff. Silently pointing out each of the hazards as we approach.
chris107: Hakeem follows
chris107: I think sneak as far as we are able, gthen rush if we are discovered.
chris107: Hakeem is very fast and can bound if needed.
Smon: GM: OK, you sneak up the trail to the switchback, each darting across in turn.
Smon: Roll stealth w advtg for Ursa then Hakeem.
chris107 Rolls 1d20+4x2 and gets:
12 (+4) = 16
10 (+4) = 14
chris107 Rolls 1d20+8x2 and gets:
5 (+8) = 13
9 (+8) = 17
Smon: You both cross, followed by Artemisia then Bricis...
Smon: /roll d20+3x2
Smon Rolls 1d20+3x2 and gets:
18 (+3) = 21
15 (+3) = 18
chris107: Ursa urges Hakeem onwards in case the amazons are discovered
Smon: /roll d20+3x2
Smon Rolls 1d20+3x2 and gets:
2 (+3) = 5
2 (+3) = 5
chris107: "We must hold that gate." He whispers softly
Smon: Bricis manages to kick a stone...
chris107: "Run!" He hisses. The two barbarians sprint the rest of the way.
Smon: Ursa thinks he hears a muffled cry from above.
Smon: You sprint up the steps.
Smon: As you race across the courtyard and up the steps to the open door, arrows twang from the slits to either side.
Smon: /roll d2x2
Smon Rolls 1d2x2 and gets:
2 = 2

chris107: 213/233
chris107: Savage bowfire!
Smon: Ahead you see the doors closing... Hakeem can jump w his boots up the steps and reach them before they close.
chris107: He does so.
chris107: "Rrrrararararar!"
chris107: Raging
Smon: Hakeem reaches the closing doors... roll init

chris107 Rolls 1d20+11x2 and gets:
6 (+11) = 17

Smon: Hakeem smashes through the doors, blowing them open and sending two burly, war-tattooed Arang-Tok orcs staggering back...
Smon: He has 1 more attack, or 2 if berserk.
chris107: Ursa sprints as fast as his sturdy legs will carry him after his Lord.
chris107: Not berserk as yet.
chris107 rolls 1d20+14 and gets: 5, (+14) = 19
Smon: Ursa's little legs pump as he scrambles up the steps... he can join the fight end of this round

chris107: it was
chris107 rolls 1d8+12 and gets: 5, (+12) = 17
chris107: Next round he will cause the blade to ignite.
Smon: The orc staggers back from a blow that would kill most men...
chris107: Let me know when it's Ursa's go please;)
Smon: Roaring, the orcs raise their axes and slash at Hakeem. Behind them steps rise to torchlit inner doors, also open.
Smon: /roll d20+5x4
Smon Rolls 1d20+5x4 and gets:

Smon: - and then Ursa is there beside him.
Smon: Ursa's go.
chris107: If Ursa sees the inner doors are open he will barrel past the fighting and secure them. Confident Hakeem can best the orcs.

chris107: 83/101
Smon: Sandor & Ajax are part of a team assaulting an orc held dwarf fortress.
Sandor Sunneson: Sorry for lateness,
Smon: Ursa reaches the top of the inner stairs...
Sandor Sunneson: Is Ajax at full spells after LR?
chris107: Perfect timing!
Sandor Sunneson: how many orcs?
Smon: Past the inner doors The great door opens into a large hall. A narrow ledge overlooks a deep, dark crevasse that cuts the room in two. A dangerous-looking rope bridge, frayed and thin, spans the gap. Water gurgles and rushes somewhere far below. Two copper braziers burn brightly on either side of the door, illuminating the western half of the room. Another ledge is barely visible on the other side of the chasm.

chris107: He launches after Ursa to keep raging
chris107: Looking for more foes!
chris107: How wide is the rope bridge?
Smon: Ursa - you see the orcs moving to cover on the far side. You also notice concealed doors to n and s ends of the 10' wide, 30' long ledge you are on, on the west side of the crevasse.
chris107: Ursa is on the east side?
Smon: west side
chris107: Sorry, misread
Smon: The map is terrible but I'm gonna say 40' -
Sandor Sunneson: Think Yorkshire Chris, Huddersfield, not York !
chris107: He rushes to the concealed door to the south

Smon: The door can be opened by simultaneously pushing in two concealed stone plates in the wall about 1 foot above it.
Sandor Sunneson: with Ursa
7:31pm  2017-7-03 Sandor Sunneson Has exited the room
chris107: Slinging his shield on his back, hammer in one hand he attempts to open the door.

chris107: 208/233
Sandor Sunneson: Sorry guys, back,
chris107: What lays beyond the concealed door?
chris107: 40' is too far for H to leap safely?
Smon: Situation: You have got through the gates to the dwarf hold, but ahead to east is a chasm crossed by a dangerous looking rope bridge with 2 Arang-Tok orcs on the far side throwing javelins.
Smon: Ursa has got a concealed door in the s wall of the ledge open, it opens onto a narrow tunnel that runs s 8' then turns w.
Smon: Your goes.
Sandor Sunneson: Can Sando5 warbow the arang tok?
chris107: Ursa slips into the tunnel, out of javelin danger
Sandor Sunneson: or fire arrows at them?
chris107: (Just trying to find H's max leap)
Sandor Sunneson: Ajax will fireball thr Tok orcs
Sandor Sunneson: assuming he doesnt get his own side
chris107: the chasm is 40' wide
chris107: we should be safe
Sandor Sunneson: Ajax fireball first
Sandor Sunneson rolls 8d6 and gets: 2, 4, 5, 5, 3, 5, 1, 2, = 27

Sandor Sunneson: Sandor will fire a couple of arrows at the one closest too him
chris107: Hakeem lands behind them?
Sandor Sunneson rolls 1d20+7 and gets: 6, (+7) = 13
Smon: As they stagger back, the bridge now burning brightly, Hakeem takes a running leap over the chasm...
Sandor Sunneson rolls 1d20 and gets: 9,
Sandor Sunneson: 13 and 16
Sandor Sunneson: down to 18 arrows
Sandor Sunneson: 1 hit?
Smon: Technically that requires 50' of move, I'll say if H makes DC 15 Athletics roll can attack
chris107 rolls 1d20+11 and gets: 15, (+11) = 26
chris107 rolls 1d20+14 and gets: 3, (+14) = 17

chris107: 78maszxcn stealthily
chris107 rolls 1d20+4 and gets: 8, (+4) = 12
Smon: Ursa looks round the corner - there is a narrow passage, a short flight of stairs down to an arrowslit bay overlooking the courtyard, in which stands a lone orc sniper.
Smon: He hasn't spotted Ursa.

Sandor Sunneson: he'll follow the little yin
Smon: Sandor notices a matching concealed door in the n wall, still shut, plus Hakeem is engaged with an orc across the chasm but it won't last long.
Smon: The amazons have swords ready at the entrance.
Smon: Ursa's orc grabs its axe and swings at him.

Smon: Hakeem cuts down his orc. Behind him he hears a crash as the burning rope bridge falls away, swinging west across the chasm to slam into the far side.
chris107:
chris107: The third casualty of Ajax's fireball
Smon: Past stalagmites Hakeem can make out yet another set of double doors 20' or so east at the e end of the cavern, these ones closed.
chris107: Arrow slits around them?
Smon: Sandor comes running up beside Ursa, jabbing at the last orc (misses).

Sandor Sunneson: See Sandor, smash, don't poke
Smon: There are no more orcs in view - you've killed 7 so far.
chris107: Ursa points out the northern secret door.
chris107: H siddles up to the double doors and inspects them.
Smon: Artemisia goes over to the west end of the rope bridge, looks down and sighs. She looks up as Ursa returns to the main cave and brightens as he points out the hidden door.
chris107: "Probably another archer through there if you want to get some blood on your blade Sandor."
Smon: GM: The doors are closed, dwarf make, good condition.
chris107: "Hope you can fly us all across, Ajax my lad."
Smon: They show no signs of battle.
Sandor Sunneson: Sandor ain't the strongest but could cast fly on someone else to lift everyone over
chris107: Ursa plonks himself down. Content for now to let others take the strain and do the bleeding.
Sandor Sunneson: Ajax even
Sandor Sunneson: Sandor happy to try and get blood on his blade

Smon: There is a tunnel beyond, n then w after 10', faint daylight from round the corner.
chris107: Hakeem stands watch over the mighty doors.
Smon: Artemisia: "Bricis watch this door."
Smon: She turns and strides over to the canyon, calls over to Hakeem on the far side: "Lord Hakeem, we are going to see if there is a way onwards here!"
Smon: Artemisia: "Sandor, Bricis come with me."
Sandor Sunneson: Is Artmesia got good strength? e.g. is she a sturdy lass??
Smon: STR 11
Smon: Amazons are mostly finesse fighters
chris107: "Hope you do find a way! These doors look unbreakable!" Hakeem replies
chris107: 2 mins got to put the supper on.
Sandor Sunneson: Sandor follows Arty
Smon: Arty Sandor & Bricis proceed single file down the narrow north tunnel.
Smon: Just beyond the turn you see a short flight of stairs descending to a gallery with several arrow slits off it to w and s.
chris107: back
Smon: Light from outside slants into the room through a series of narrow embrasures. The area is littered with well-gnawed bones, cobwebs, and rat droppings . Poorly cured hide blankets are care· lessly scattered over the floor.
Smon: It looks hurriedly and recently vacated.
Sandor Sunneson: Explore Ma'am?
Smon: Creeping down the stairs, you see a narrow tunnel running north.
Sandor Sunneson: Guess we are
Smon: A couple more arrow slits on the w side of the tunnel command a good view of the approach outside.
Smon: Artemisia: "There were orcs here..."
Smon: Bricis: "Sandor you should go first. The queen is injured."
Smon: A: "Tis but a scratch..."
Sandor Sunneson: Will do
chris107: Hakeem takes a running jump back over the chasm.
chris107: when he hears of their siuccess.
Smon: H is oblivious of their success as yet
chris107: Okay
Smon: Sandor takes point, proceeding down the n tunnel.
Smon: After about 30' it ends at a dark 10x10 chamber in the rock, lit by the glow from Sandor's blade.

Smon: Bricis: "We should fetch Ursa and Ajax."
Smon: Hakeem thinks he hears a baying like wolves from somewhere beyond the doors.
Smon: A: "Bricis run back and fetch the others."
chris107: He slips among the stalagmites, searching for a position which he could defend and not face attack from all sides.
Smon: GM: Bricis nods and hurries back to the main cave. "Ursa, Ajax, the Queen requires your assistance."
Sandor Sunneson: Bricis the lapdog Sandor thinks
chris107: Ursa groans but follows after receiving a curt wave from H.

Sandor Sunneson: Shall I fireball the generic area?
Smon: Meanwhile Hakeem hears the heavy - very heavy - tread of approaching feet from beyond the brass-shod dwarf doors.
Sandor Sunneson: ajax asks
Smon: Artemisia: "Do it!"
chris107: H steels himself, ready to rage if he needs to.

Smon: cheers
chris107: Cheers Fergus
chris107: Thursday should be fine, yes.

chris107: This is level 3?!
Smon: No, the orc scouts are twice as tough, and I added 2.
chris107: My face to face guys sail into 5e Selatine on Saturday afternoon.
chris107: Ah! Still very tough for level threes.
Smon: Good old Selatine. I hope they are nice to Jana.

sandor sunneson: Or back to Amazi[
chris107: He'd prefer to be level 20 when he fights the Warbringer!
chris107: We need to press on. Getting in won't be so easy without surprise.
chris107: We can take the dead to lady Meda when we are victorious
sandor sunneson: Sounds good
Smon: Meda is very handy for raising NPCs
Smon: She hardly ever raises PCs!
Smon: I think Thuruar was the only one
Smon: BTW it is costing her a fortune in diamonds...
Smon: You're not sure how many she has left.
sandor sunneson: Sandor is less than 1000XP from L9 along with Ursa?
sandor sunneson: Should she not invoice the dead once alive?
chris107: Jana Vex too?
sandor sunneson: That dragon has a few diamonds in his horde
chris107: She raised someone really early on..
chris107: Dyson?
chris107: After the attack by Vrok I think.
Smon: She raised Alicia Scarnetti. Later Jana Vex.
chris107: that was it
chris107: Ursa at 51/101, 1 rage used, full healing dice
chris107: Hakeem 208/233, 1 rage used, full healing dice.
chris107: No berserks used.
Smon: If you wait till the fire burns out that'll be a short rest.
chris107: (Just for my ref. next game
Smon: Will continue Thursday 7pm
Smon: I'll post log.
chris107: That would be great, Ursa needs to rest.
