Smon: GM: end of last session - Smon: That night the villagers hold a celebration in your honour and have a whip round to reward you - 36gp 5 lb of copper trade bars v 3gp, 7lb of spices v 14gp - total 53gp DESTROYERBILL: and especial thanks to the one villager who was able to kill a redcap Smon: (17.66 gp each) chris107: Sigurd gives his share to Father Cornwallis. To help the village rebuild Smon: "Thank you, good Sigurd!"<<
Smon: GM: 9/8/4448 A few weeks later in Modron, the heroes Sigurd & Generyk Wyzard are recovered from their exploits against the Redcaps. For his deeds of valor, Sigurd is appointed by King Anoethin an Armiger Defender of Modron and a suit of plate harness crafted for him (AC 16 base).
chris107:
Smon: News arrives from the great war raging to the east - 1 very bad 6 very good...
Smon: /roll d6
Smon rolls 1d6 and gets: 1,
Smon: oops
chris107: cripes
sandor sunneson: oooh
sandor sunneson: Is the Invincible overlord dead ?
Shieldbiter bill: Interesting
Smon: The Overlord's fleet has been ambushed & destroyed! The Skandik King Ossary invoked the power of the Black Sun against his foes.
Smon: fate of the Overlord roll...
Smon: /roll d6
Smon rolls 1d6 and gets: 3,
Smon: The Overlord was wounded but survives.
Smon: fate of Archpriest Thuruar
Smon: /roll d6
Smon rolls 1d6 and gets: 2,
sandor sunneson: taken prisoner?
Smon: Archpriest Thuruar has fallen!
chris107: I'll mention it to Kjato tomorrow!
chris107: That will not bode well for the south.
Smon: Hygelak, sorely wounded, has retreated to the City State. Now the Skandik fleet may threaten Modron itself!
Smon: Should they follow up their victory by essaying the Roglaroon.
chris107: "Then we must rally and defend it!"
Smon: King Anoethin summons his knights and advisiors.
sandor sunneson: They have choices, were they not heading to attack the south>
sandor sunneson: ??
chris107: "My countrymen do not make kind masters."
sandor sunneson: Well said Sigurd, provide me with arrows to turn them into pin cushions
chris107: Sig will give his friend Elfis 100GP
chris107: And hurry to the King's side.
Smon: GM: The pitiful remnants of the Modron forces sent in the Overlord's expeditionary forces are beginning to return, but the city is still woefully under-defended.
Smon: Fate of Modron's General Modronel:
Smon: /roll d6
Smon rolls 1d6 and gets: 6,
sandor sunneson: Thank you Sigurd
Smon: Apparently the good General accounted himself admirably, and Modron's land forces are largely unscathed, they should be back in a week or two.
Smon: King Anoethin: "Some good news, at least!"
chris107: (marked off)
chris107: "That is a blessing. Is there anything we can do to aid them?"
Smon: The old high priest of Mitra, Shalot, speaks up:
"I have had a dream..."
Shieldbiter bill: I can air drop supplies in
Smon: He looks to Sigurd.
"In my dream the demigoddess St Alliria of Mitra appeared to me. She told me to select a Champion, and send him to the Lost Valley of the Barbarian Kings, where long ago the knights of Mitra vanquished the savage Altanians. There he must restore the shrine of Mitra built in honour of that victory, and..."
Smon: "...Lay to rest the undead shade of the last of the Barbarian Kings. Then Mitra's light will shine upon us, and we shall be delivered from evil!"
chris107: "AMEN!"
Shieldbiter bill: Or I can air drop sigurd where he needs to go
Smon: GM: While this sounds unlikely, it is common rumour that high priest Shalot does commune directly with the gods. So who knows...
chris107: "Where is this lost valley?"
Smon: Old Shalot turns to Generik Wizard. "Aye! Sigurd is the one who has come to us! He is our champion, and your mystic carpet shall be the instrument of his travel!"
sandor sunneson: I will accompany you Sigurd, it sounds mad but fun
Shieldbiter bill: Okay
chris107: Sigurd beems with pride.
Smon: Shalot nods to Elfis. "Excellent! Draw upon the Mystic Power of Three to cleanse the Lost Valley of Altanian Foulness, and Mitra shall deliver us from the Skandik hordes!"
chris107: "I will be glad to have your help my friends."
chris107: "Where is this lost valley?"
chris107: "And what do we know of these shades?"
Smon: Shalot: "The Lost Valley lies thirty leagues from here, beyond the Swamp Desolate..."
sandor sunneson: Elfis in the morning will go and buy arrows
Smon: "Follow the bounteous River Modron until she enters the Desolate Swamp. Follow the north fork then for thirty miles, up to its headwaters in the Desolate Hills... there in the Desolate Valley of the Barbarian Kings, thou shalt find what thee seek!"
chris107: "Is that south of Ashenshaft?"
chris107: ah
Shieldbiter bill: So a 90 minute fly
chris107: (about 4217 then?)
Smon: Drawlin: "Perhaps a little more than 90 minutes, old friend."
Smon: hex 4217 yup
Smon: GM: It's a full day's carpet ride.
Shieldbiter bill: So 180
Shieldbiter bill: Okay
chris107: "I hear that the shades of the dead fear not the bight of steel. I have my silver dagger would it be possible to get some silver arrows for my friend Elfis?"
Smon: King Anoethin: "Friends, you shall have any supplies you require for this noble quest! Arrows, provisions, water... you name it!"
sandor sunneson: Thank you your Majesty
sandor sunneson: He'll bow respectfully
chris107: "Thank you."
Smon: Anoethin: "Of course! A dozen silver arrows shall be crafted tonight for the elven archer!"
chris107: Sig too
sandor sunneson: Thank you again E will say
Shieldbiter bill: It would take about 4 and half hours
chris107: (these new full colour hard copy maps are just great!)
Smon: The high priest turns to Sigurd. "As soon as I woke from the dream, I had the silver sword Joyeux brought from our vaults... They say it was borne by the Knights of Mitra in ancient days, when they cleansed the desolate wastelands of foul Altanian wights and such."
Smon: GM: The high priest invites you to spend the night at the Temple of Mitra in fasting and prayer before your holy quest.
chris107: "Praise Mitra!"
chris107: Like most new converts, Sigurd is very devout and would be delighted to do so.
Smon: The next morning you gird on your harness. The silver sword Joyeux is presented to Sigurd (silver longsword, can hit creatures vulnerable to silver).
Shieldbiter bill: Sorry I have other important matters to get ready for our journey
chris107:
Smon: Elfis is presented with a fine leather quiver holding 12 silver longbow arrows.
Smon: Generik has to clean his carpet...
Smon: He now lives eats and sleeps on his carpet, feet never touching the ground.
Smon: & it was looking a bit grubby.
Smon: You are also given adventurer's packs with a week's iron rations, 50' silk rope & grappling hook, lantern & oil etc.
chris107: nice
sandor sunneson: Cool
chris107: (sheet on page 64 all updated)
Smon: A small crowd gather outside the temple to see you off, Princess Philomena among them in a blue court dress. She goes over to Sigurd, looking hesitant.
"When you return, my father will knight you..."
She looks down, seeming embarrassed.
Smon: She looks up, cheeks red. "I wanted you to have... have my favour."
chris107: "Wow, Philly. Things have worked out well for us here in Modron. Are you okay?"
chris107: "Thank you. I'd be honoured."
Smon: Philly reaches into her bosom and produces a scented white kerchief.
"For... for your quest."
Smon: The princess smiles. King Anoethin, Chamberlain Drawlin, and the High Priest smile affably.
chris107: He tucks it safely to his heart under his new harness.
sandor sunneson: How cute, Elfis will smile
chris107:
Smon: Anoethin: "Yes, yes, very good Philomena. Now, all ready?"
Shieldbiter bill: I've seen this all before come on Sigurd get on the carpet
chris107: "For the glory of Mitra and Modron."
chris107: the heavily scarred Skandik hops on the carpet.
Smon: The crowd cheer as the warriors get onto the carpet and it rises into the air under Generyk's control.
chris107: Sig waves goodbye
chris107: "This is the way to travel, eh, Elfis?"
sandor sunneson: Elfis gets his hanky out and waves it in direction to the watching crowd
Smon: The crowd wave as the carpet rises and heads out of Modron.
Shieldbiter bill: I tell the carpet to fly directley to our destanation
sandor sunneson: Certainky is
sandor sunneson: Modron Airways
chris107:
Shieldbiter bill: Welcome wyzard airlines
Smon: These harsh wastelands were once the domain of the Barbarian King, whose men
bowed before animalistic spirits and fought with weapons of brass. In their raids, they
showed no mercy: not content with pillaging, they took their victims as slaves or killed them
when they could. So it was until the death of the king, after which men in mail came from the
plains, and as their foes once, they had no pity for those they met...
Today, there is a fortress city named Modron on the lands where the barbarians
had roamed, and barges plow their once holy river.
The abundant mines and rich pastures have since transformed the wilderness into something else, a place of order and watchful sentries. Yet beyond the lands of the settlers, the mountains are silent as they had always been. And it is said, in a valley haunted by the shades of the barbarian warriors, there
stands yet the burial place of that last warlord: the Barbarian King...
chris107: Nice
Smon: GM: Generik sets your course south and east along the shining River Modron.
Smon: /roll d6
Smon rolls 1d6 and gets: 5,
Smon: You pass a few barges as you head upriver, traffic unperturbed by the looming Skandik threat.
chris107: Sig waves
Smon: Bargees, merchants and travellers look up in wonder at the flying carpet. Some wave back. A small red haired boy throws stones from the bank.
Smon: You pass the fork with River Difring, continuing south-east. The river grows narrower, and as the hours pass fewer signs of habitation are seen, until you are flying above the bleak fens of the Swamp Desolate, rumoured abode of trolls, hags, and worse.
Smon: The evening sun is lowering over the western forests beyond the swamps when at last you see ahead the rugged heights of the Difring Hills, and the river turns north, approaching its headwaters in a misty vale.
chris107: "Let's camp at the headwaters then go down to the valley at dawn?"
sandor sunneson: Sounds good
Shieldbiter bill: Okay suër
Smon: https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhixyNI1Yx9NU6tFn4ZnfnBspnNDCxMbJuRGH3ulv_ah1eFvZuuJHQ86h8oGn-K2C89ofFke8u9UbiEyKrRnqYaWsURfnEQMoO1CK5zn93wk9_FxmXjoTqUv8vPFPmfXK8tWOhjy2V0qWs/w530-h278-p-k/EMDT47_Cover02.png
Smon: (cover image of adventure)
chris107: spot on!
Smon: GM: You see the river snakes through a narrow gorge before entering the valley, a narrow track crossing back & forth across several bridges.
chris107: "In Searune we told of the ancient Altani Kings and their great wealth buried in strange barrows."
sandor sunneson: maintained bridges? rope bridges??
Smon: The Valley – which can be approached on an old road half-swallowed by encroaching forests – is a basin surrounded by imposing peaks, and (without flight) can only be entered through the canyon carved by the swift mountain river that divides it. The sides of the interior are steep, and north of the fork in the river, form the slopes of the rugged hill or mountain range. The darkling land is covered in thick mists which obscure your view of the valley itself.
Shieldbiter bill: We have flight
Smon: You lower to find a camp for the night in the woods just south of the valley entrance. Looming cliffs over the rapid river look to create permanent gloom even during the day.
The road crosses the river multiple times; old stone bridges and fords follow in succession.
Smon: stone bridges Elfis, too far off to see any signs of maintenance.
Smon: GM: You find a secluded glade in the woods just south of the valley. Generik curls up to sleep on his carpet hovering 9' off the ground.
sandor sunneson: We taking it in turns to watch?
chris107: Sig makes a camp, laying out silk rope around the perimetre about 6" off the ground
Smon: You are a little west of the river, just west of an old road winding north into the gorge.
chris107: "Sure thing Elfis."
sandor sunneson: Elfis will take first shirdt
sandor sunneson: shift
Smon: /roll d6
Smon rolls 1d6 and gets: 6,

Smon rolls 1d6+2 and gets: 4, (+2) = 6
sandor sunneson: Elfis will alert the others
chris107: Sig pulls on his hauberk and grabs his sword.
Smon: As Elfis calls out a warning, 6 wolves enter the clearing, passing silently through the silk rope around the perimeter without disturbing it.
Smon: With a shock you see the moonlight passing through their ghostly forms - shades!
chris107: that's not good
Smon: roll init

Smon: Joyeuse cuts right through the last wolf! Silently it shimmers and vanishes.
Smon: There is no sign of your vanquished foe, but for Elfis' blood seeping from beneath unscratched armour.
Shieldbiter bill: I fly over to get my daggers
Smon: G lands to recover his daggers.
chris107: Sig tears off a strip of his cloak to bind his friend's wounds.
chris107: "A strange and wicked place indeed."
sandor sunneson: thank you
sandor sunneson: Elfis will collect his fired arrows
Smon: GM: You are not troubled again that night (can recover 1 hp & spells). Dawn rises next day uncommonly dim and cool. A heavy fog muffles the sounds of the rushing river.
chris107: 38/38HP
chris107: "Are we flying in?"
Shieldbiter bill: Yes
Smon: GM: What now?
Smon: Fly along the river?
Smon: Generyk studies 3 x magic missile!
sandor sunneson: sure
chris107: "Elfis, with those wounds you'd better hold back with your bow."
chris107: "I'll protect us."
sandor sunneson: Elfis will smile, 10 days and I should be ok
Smon: After a breakfast of iron rations the carpet rises up, following the old road north into the gorge and along the river...
Smon: Looming cliffs over the rapid river create permanent gloom even during the day.
The road crosses the river multiple times; old bridges and fords follow in succession. Up the
river, there are more and more remains of some ancient battle: discarded and useless shields,
weapons and armour.
Smon: Half a mile or so along the gorge, you see up to your right rectangular ruins of a crude watch tower stand on the cliffs above the road. A barbarian fortress demolished by the armies of Alliria and Mitra, and only some of the exterior walls remain.
chris107: "Would their King be found in a watch tower?"
chris107: "Let's take a look anyway."
Smon: North of the ruined tower a winding mountain path runs past several stone cairns. Around and in the rubble, you see several round limestone balls, perhaps the leftover missiles of siege engines.
sandor sunneson: Elfis nods
Smon: You approach the ruin.
chris107: (from above)
Smon: The moss covered ruins of the tower appear to hold little of interest, though something may lie beneath the burial cairns. To the north through the trees you glimpse a flash of white marble.
sandor sunneson: Elfis will use his elf vision to see if he sees anyhing of intentest
Smon: Looking north, Elfis sees that the white is two great marble slabs embedded in the mountainside, with some kind of entrance above them, perhaps to a shrine or tomb.
Smon: They are about a quarter mile off.
chris107: "That looks like the kind of place that a king would be buried."
Smon: OOC stopping in 10 mins
chris107: "can you get us up there, Wyzard?"
chris107: OOC No worries
Shieldbiter bill: We fly over to the place elf is spotted
Smon: GM: Approaching the marble slabs you see they list
the names of Mitra's fallen, perhaps three or four hundred men. One name, that of Saint Bofred, was once
gilded; yet the paint and gold has faded, leaving behind the bare stone which someone has apparently
tried to smash on multiple occasions. Between & above dark entrance once sealed by portcullis
opens to an underground hall.
Smon: To the south, a steep mountain path ascends to the
ruined watch tower you just left.
sandor sunneson: HEad towards it??
chris107: Hmmmmm a Mitran Tomb, not the kind of place that a barbarian king would be found. But it does look to have been desecrated..
Shieldbiter bill: Let's go there
Smon: A short tunnel opens into the Mitraic chapel and tomb hewed from the rock - it has been looted, and at the far end the statues of Alkaia the
Goddess-Saint of Knights and Mitra the God of Justice gaze disapprovingly with empty eye sockets down from their pedestals on
the makeshift fireplace, scattered bones and smashed sarcophagi, which still bear skeletal
remains and rusted equipment.
chris107: Can we see any tracks leading to or from the tomb?
Smon: Looking around you see no recent tracks.
Smon: /roll d6
Smon rolls 1d6 and gets: 4,
Smon: /roll d6
Smon rolls 1d6 and gets: 1,
Smon:
Smon: 1 in 6 chance
sandor sunneson: lol
sandor sunneson:
chris107: "We should find the foul creatures who did this. Not desecrate this holy place further."
Smon: Something about the pedestal of St Alkaia's statue attracts Sigurd's attention. He has a strong feeling that something waits for him there.
sandor sunneson: Elfis will encourage him to go over and look
chris107: He draws Joyeux and utters a prayer to Mitra
Shieldbiter bill: Let's go in
Smon: It's an eerie feeling, something is calling to him.
chris107: pressing on to face whatever enemy awaits.
Smon: GM: The trio enter the desecrated tomb.
Smon: Suddenly you notice that Joyeux is shining!
chris107: He presses on
Smon: A silvery light! A part of the pedestal of Alkaia's statue shines too.
chris107: "St. Alkaia, bless us."
sandor sunneson: Elfis will touch the statue for luck
Smon: Elfis touches the cool ancient stone of the human deity.
chris107: He lays Joyeux at her holy feet.
Smon: Sigurd lays the sword at the statue's feet. He has a strong urge to touch the pedestal where the silver light shines.
chris107: (in the shining bit)
Smon: OOC Generik has fallen asleep IRL
sandor sunneson: Elfis will touch the area
chris107:
Smon: Elfis touches the pedestal - nothing happens.
sandor sunneson: pedestal
chris107: Having laid the sword in the light he reaches out and touches both. Paying to Mitra as he does so.
sandor sunneson: Elfis will thank Mitra for helping him survive to date and overcome the wolves
9:00pm 2018-8-09 Shieldbiter bill Has exited the room
Smon: There is a faint click and at Sigurd's touch a secret compartment in the pedestal springs open! Inside shines a mithril shield emblazoned with the image of Alkaia.
chris107: wow
Smon: And a voice speaks in Sigurd's mind. "Bear me well."
sandor sunneson: ooooo
chris107: He reaches in and takes it.
Smon: And so Sigurd gains the Shield of Alkaia - +2 shield!
chris107:
Smon: OOC I gave it a 1 in 6 chance he'd sense its presence, so lucky for once!
chris107: Very lucky.
sandor sunneson: nice one
Smon: OOC ok stopping there, 1100 XP each.
chris107: Let's hope we can lay the shades to rest next time.
chris107: Cheers Simon, Fergus and (sleeping) Bill
Smon: can you guys play Monday?
Smon: (he awoke)
