4/7 to 6/7/4448 S&W Morgansfort towards Modron (300 XP)

joriandrake: ok, let's play then, SImon did John level up last session?
Smon: I dunno, you need to track XP. 2500 to Thief 3rd I think
Smon: http://smons.blogspot.com/2018/06/swords-wizardry-game.html
joriandrake: the facebook page is not loading
Smon: yeah 2500 to T3
Smon: >>the facebook page is not loading<< You need to Friend me on Facebook
joriandrake: aren't you tracking it? I mean you have the whole char sheet to begin with
joriandrake: Im not even using facebook
Smon: No you need to track XP & GP. Or you can stay at T2.
Smon: I tell you the XP each session & post it on the blog - http://smons.blogspot.com/
Smon: If you're really with-it you can even add your Attribute XP bonuses!
Sandor Sunneson: Elfis is on 2749 XP
joriandrake: I don't know the weapth, as we didn't sell the loot yet from the previous dungeon and I thought we use a pooled group wealth for this campaign
joriandrake: I go and add up the xps
Sandor Sunneson: We've npt distributed the loot
Sandor Sunneson: Mental thunderstorms here,
Smon: Last 3 sessions John got 566, 1400 & 0 (absent) so looks like must be T3.
Sandor Sunneson: ground is so dry
joriandrake: ah right, that's it, the missed session threw me off
chris107: I think it's just about to brake here too. Gone really dark and still.
Smon: 1st 2 sessions was 250 & 1800
Sandor Sunneson: Could Elfis take some of his share of the gp to buy some arrows
joriandrake: the moon is red and its damn hot here
chris107: Cool with Sigurd
Smon: I suggest you split any loot now as you've been spending a week in Morgansfort
Smon: Does Sigurd have any to share w others?
joriandrake: so I will write this down, and to be sure: 1800 + 250 + 566 + 1400 xp?
joriandrake: John as promised shares the loot and the mone gained for that carving equally
joriandrake: cash*
Smon: John - Yes plus any XP bonuses, those are small & you can check them later
Smon: If you are selling anything let me know what please
chris107: Sigurd escaped with a rusty axe and his belongings.
Sandor Sunneson: And his life
chris107: The only thing that matters.
joriandrake: ok, as it seems John reached lvl3 as well, so needs things like HP added
chris107: I think he got 50GP for getting one slave free?
Smon: OK you roll a d4+1 for new hp for John
Smon: No, was 25gp for 1, 50 for 2
chris107: Which he is happy to squander on wine, women and song for a week until we set off to Modron.
chris107: Not so much song then
Smon: You can divide 25 by 3 & spend 1gp for +8gp per PC
joriandrake: btw, is the xp calculation table also different from 5e?
joriandrake rolls 1d4+1 and gets: 4, (+1) = 5
chris107: nice roll
joriandrake: woah, actually not rolling an 1 on hp
Smon: If you are spending your reward money carousing you can have +8 XP
chris107: yay! 4024
Sandor Sunneson: lol
Smon: OK John has 14 hp, more than Elfis' 12!
joriandrake: nope, will need to find a fence, sell the wooden carved thingy, and get gear like 2 qivers of arrows and other basic stuff
Sandor Sunneson: How much are a quarrel load of arrows?
joriandrake: 20 arrows
Sandor Sunneson: in price I mean
Smon: There's a trader at Morgansfort will give 60gp in store credit for the piece of carved chalcedony
Smon: A quiver + 12 arrows is 5gp
joriandrake: that I don't know, probably a gold or two, but I need to think about extra rations, rope, other stuff as we started basically without any of those
Smon: Or 4gp for just the arrows; or 1gp for 3 arrows.
Sandor Sunneson: I guess he would have his own quiver being an archer?
joriandrake: ok, Chalcedony sold (if for no other reason than for because I can't remember that name)
Sandor Sunneson: I'll but 12 arrpws
Smon: (IRL arrows cost a lot more than bows BTW! Only Moldvay Basic D&D has at all realistic prices)
joriandrake: yes, one, but have no arrows in it
Smon: Yes you have quivers
Smon: Iron Rations (dry rations) are 1gp for 1 week's supply
joriandrake: (there is no way arrows cost more than bows, especially if I think here about basic quality hungarian recourved/coomposite bows, even if you consider special arrow heads, but basic wooden arrows can simply be carwed too just not much use against armored enemies)
Sandor Sunneson: Ok, Elfis is ready to go
Smon: English arrows were high tech while the wooden self bows were a single length of shaped wood.
Sandor Sunneson: on this boat trip
Smon: 50' hemp rope is 1 gp. 50' Silk rope (non encumbering) is 10gp.
Smon: A good grappling hook is 1gp.
joriandrake: ok, John buys enough arrows (and another quiver) to have 2 full, he buys Iron rations enough for 2 weeks for one person, a rope, a lantern with lamp oil (3 units of lamp oil), an iron door blocker, and will look around for lockpicks, bows and armors
joriandrake: and a grappling hook
joriandrake: probably not enough gold left for healing potions but John still goes and checks its pricing
Smon: Hooded adventurer's lantern is 7gp. Pint of lamp oil is 1 sp/0.1gp
joriandrake: as for everyone: sold carving means all 3 of us have +20 gold due to equal sharing
joriandrake: Ok, hooded lantern means the one that shines light only in a specific direction instead of being a light beacon for all, yes?
Smon: Smith will make an iron door wedge for 5 sp/0.5gp
Smon: That's a bullseye lantern & is 12gp
chris107: Sigurd spends his share on more beer and loose women.
Smon: Both are tough brass frame with shutters so don't shatter easily
joriandrake: ok, will order that from the smith then, and make sure the hooded lantern has a ring on top for hanging and to be able to shut down the side of it to be able to temporarily stop light from shining through without suffocating the fame
joriandrake: then probably what I had in mind is the bullseye lantern instead
Smon: Bullseye lantern has mirrors to create a powerful focused beam. Even hooded lantern can have shutters set to have most light in 1 direction.
Smon: ok
chris107: herecomes the rain! 2 mins while I shut all the windows
joriandrake: ok, I will buy the bullseye one, would later upgrade to that anyway (probably), and I still have a torch left extra
Smon: >>Sigurd spends his share on more beer and loose women.<< GM: There is no share, it's store credit only. If you wanted cash you should have taken the chalcedony to Modron or CSIO
joriandrake: a new beroll and warm (whatever you place on it) as well
joriandrake: bedroll
joriandrake: and... blanket?
Smon: You can each have 20gp of store credit (not cash) at the Morgansfort Traders
joriandrake: oh
Smon: Bedroll is 2sp/0.2gp
joriandrake: well, we still have cash from the quest
Smon: Bedroll includes a wool blanket
joriandrake: I will probably use up all the store credit first before spending hard coins
joriandrake: ok, some regional practicality at the end: what is the weather like where we go to escort the princess?
chris107: back
Smon: Carousing - I reckon you can spend gold & earn up to levelxdays XP, eg a level 3 can carouse 7 days for 21 XP & GP.
Sandor Sunneson: John Little is shopping
joriandrake: (Sorry about that, but we really need basic stuff and I have no idea of the prices to do it outside session)
Smon: It's early summer, the weather has been bright and sunny. Modron lies downstream where the Roglaroon meets the Modron River.
chris107: Sigurd kicks his heels then. Waiting for the next asventure. He'd make a a terrible store clerk.
Smon: (happy to do it in-session, lets me adjust the listed prices)
joriandrake: Is it possible to buy a watterproof scroll case, or is the one we found the scroll with like that already?
Smon: Yes you have a waterproof scroll case but it has an evil cursed scroll in it
Smon: Philomena advises against opening unless you can remove the curse
joriandrake: ok, John will try to get rid of the scroll, but keep the case, I assume other smaller stuff could be placed into the case as well, not jsut paper scrolls
Smon: The local temple priest is powerful & could remove it for just 300gp
chris107: (And I've just had three hours of shopping and identifying and such in Kjatogame. Never even rolle a dice  )
joriandrake: John will ask Phil for aid in this, maybe we find a buyer
joriandrake: perhaps the fence would be interested in it, to buy it especially because its cursed? good to plant on rivals or such
Smon: Philomena: "When we reach Modron I will have the Temple of Mitra cleanse it."
Sandor Sunneson: Don;tt think we have that much coin
chris107: "Burn the bloody thing and let's be off."
Smon: /roll 3d6
Smon rolls 3d6 and gets: 2, 2, 3, = 7
joriandrake: "Let me see if I find a way to... get rid of it now"
Smon: GM: John makes a CHA test and does locate a shady 'fence' character in Morgansort by name of Bargus, who invites him into his den of iniquity...
Smon: Bargus: "Cursed blackflame, eh? Sounds interesting. I know folks in the City would be interested in that... say, I like your face John. A hundred gold and an hour with one o' me best girls, take yer pick!"
joriandrake: "Greetings, it is always nice to meet such fine gentlemen. I heard you have a good business sense and mightbe interested in special offers"
joriandrake: John nods. "Deal. Also tell me if you have any good lockpicks and a sturdy bag. Don't wory, not intended to get in the way of the locals, its for when we leave town"
Smon: Bargus nods, grinning. A portly middle aged fellow, arms round two two buxom scantily clad wenches in his underground gambling hall.
joriandrake: John looks at the girls, checks for any that don't just look god but clever and nimble (and looking good can be secondary as long he find one that would makea fine thief)
joriandrake: good*
Smon: "Sure thing, master lockpicks and bag, 25 gold."
joriandrake: ofc if there is a godess between them John won"t hesitate
joriandrake: "Alright, make that 75 gold in cash, or rather 70 and I keep the scroll case, plus the lockpicks, bag, and your offer of a girl"
Smon: A shapely redhead, Leena, catches John's eye - https://i.pinimg.com/originals/7a/48/72/7a4872dde993de4b0f9137d706305871.jpg - "Aye, I'm right nimble with me fingers!" she grins.
joriandrake: (he offers 5 gold so he can keep the case without the scroll)
joriandrake: "Well, then let us see just how nimble your fingers are"
Smon: "No can do, we need the scroll case mate! Take it out, she'll blow! And not in a good way neither." Leena hurriedly prises the scroll case from John's fingers before he can open it and unleash the Blackflame Curse.
joriandrake: "Sigh, fine, then 75 gold and all other goods" John grins as he checks the girl out then snips his fingers. "Master Bargus, I assume our deal is agreed on then?"
Smon: Bargus: "I can sell you one like it for 1 gold mate - ebony inlay, lovely work!"
joriandrake: "So be it, but it has to be waterproof"
joriandrake: "and... Leena? we can go spend some nice meal and a night at the local inn, if you wish so"
Smon: Bargus: "Of course!" He digs out a scroll with wax seal. "There you go. By the way mate, I like your style - I can put in a word for you with one of the City Guilds next time I'm up that way?" Meanwhile Leena smiles, tousles her hair and beckons John to a rear room...
Smon: GM: John can spend an extra 5gp on Leena to get the Girlfriend Experience
Smon: ~fade to black~
joriandrake: "I'm also pleasantly surprised by the promising future relationship between you Master Bargus... and you as well Leena"
joriandrake: (Leena is offered a proper meal at an inn or restaurant, John will inquire if she's interested in leaving with him to where they escort the princess, as a companion -and potential student? co-adventuress?-)
Smon: GM: John spends a pleasant evening with Leena, who seems distinctly talented in all sorts of ways (Thief-1), but declines his offer to go with him. The next morning Old Gnarly the Fisherman readies his boat for your departure.
joriandrake: (yes, 5 gp or 25 gp to be spent on Leena, if she also accepts taking John's side)
joriandrake: (oh well)
joriandrake: John will before meeting the others bid farewell to Leena and check out the prices for healing potions
joriandrake: (I intend to get back to Leena later, not accepting right away just makes it more interesting)
Smon: At the boat, Princess Philomena notes John's slightly downcast look.
"Don't worry John, I'm sure you'll have better luck next time! Perhaps bring her gifts of jewels, diamonds..."
Smon: /roll d6
Smon rolls 1d6 and gets: 3,
chris107: "Knock her over the head and drag her to the boat by her hair. That always worked for me."
Sandor Sunneson: Good to see you again John
joriandrake: "Well, maybe. For now I'M more interested in keeping us alive than spending riches on jewelry. I will see if I can get some healing potions"
Smon: The local temple can sell a curative for 300gp, restores d8+1 hp and cures paralysis.
chris107: "It's what we Skandiks call foreplay."
joriandrake: "Hello Elfis. I managed to get rid of the cursed thing, and now I try to turn that profit into some potions. We need those, and we can't always rely on Phil alone for healing, plus what if she needs healing herself?" John adds extra feel of 'caring for' to his words
joriandrake: "Ah heck"
joriandrake: (300 is way out our league now)
joriandrake: John gives 50 gold to Phil for safekeeping (he keeps 25) or for use as she fits it required
joriandrake: "ropes - check, arrows - check, food rations - check - door stopper - check, I think we are as prepared as we can be"
Smon: Philly takes the coin pouch. "Thank you John."
joriandrake: "Sigurd, keep your plan in mind for when we might need to 'request' some goods from a caravan. It could be a good method to get their items, like healing potions"
joriandrake: (John already plans ahead, thinking about other, less legit venues to get healing potions)
Smon: Gnarly eyes John's gear. "You shouldna need most of that - straight trip downriver to Modron, about 250 miles. We'll sail day and night with Sigurd to help me, should be there in three days, tops. Unless the Hagrost pirates get us, of course."
chris107: "You could buy a whole brewery full of ale for the price of one potion."
joriandrake: "Of course... then again, I rather plan for the worst cases as much I can."
chris107: "Then we'll chop their heads off." Grins Sigurd happily.
joriandrake: John whispers to Elfis "Help with the lookout, your keen eyes might allow us to avoid those pirates"
joriandrake: Then John nods to Sigurd "Witho ut luck the pirates will soon show up, so best be aware and ready"
joriandrake: our*
chris107: "Excellent."
Sandor Sunneson: They will, will do my best he'll say back quietly
Smon: Pirates of Hagrost - https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61mB1xj5yhL._SX258_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg
joriandrake: John nods seriously at Elfis and already checks out which positions would be best on the ship to shoot from or to sneak around to stab people from
Smon: GM: You all board (Sigurd John Elfis & Philomena) and Old Gnarly casts off, steering the little boat skillfully out into midstream of the vast Roglaroon river.
Smon: The hot summer sun beats down overhead. Gnarly asks Sigurd's help in steering round the bend ahead as the river turns east towards the sea.
Sandor Sunneson: Elfis will look out for potential encounters in the direction they are travelling
chris107: Sig is delighted to be back on water and helps out enthusiasticaly
joriandrake: Meanwhile John will check the two sides of the ship
Smon: Elfis takes lookout, notes ahead a fat merchant ship come into view round the bend, heading slowly upriver on the shimmering waters, near the west bank where stands the Old Island Fortress from where you rescued Philomena.
chris107: Sigurd starts to drool, looking at the fat merchantmen. "Ripe for plundering..."
joriandrake: afk
Sandor Sunneson: He'll point the ship out to others
chris107: Sigurd thinks about stealing a Long Ship and becoming a pirate.
Sandor Sunneson: How many folk can he see on the ship?
Smon: Philly watches the other ship: "That's where the goblins grabbed me - captain swore the west bank was safe, we just had to stay away from the Dearthwood on the east shore... ha."

You pass the merchant midstream, Sigurd & Gnarly skillfully taking the broad turn. You note it flies the banners of far Tarantis, swarthy well-armed Tarantan sailors man the deck. A ship captain in purple silk and silvered steel watches your little boat from the rear deck, arms folded.
Smon: Elfis counts a dozen men on deck.
Smon: The Tarantine captain twirls his lacquered moustache as he watches you, smiling.
chris107: "Glad we got you to saftey. Philly. Just hope your dad doesn't want to send you back."
Sandor Sunneson: All quiet so far
Smon: Four heavy oars help the merchant navigate the bend and continue slowly upriver towards the docks of the City State.
chris107: Then Sig grins woolfishly at the captain.
Smon: He grins back, inclining his head slightly at the fellow sea-wolf. The ship passes you by.
joriandrake: back
Smon: GM: You sail on downstream at a decent pace, about 5-6 miles per hour.
chris107: "A fine little craft this, Gnarly. "
Smon: A little after noon you see ahead the Port of Bier at Caravan Crossing, the muddy town straddling both banks of the great river a couple miles apart. Ferry barges carry loads back and forth, while numerous ships are docked at the north shore for unloading.
joriandrake: John observes the passing ship "Perhaps Tarantan presence keeps the pirates away, unless they are the pirate captain's next, rich target"
Sandor Sunneson: Bier, hmmmm, yum
Smon: Gnarly nods to Sigurd. "Aye Skandik, she always did me right." He looks ahead downstream. "Should be clear sailing from here to near the Hagrost. Pirates like to be comin' downstream, hit boats headin' upriver just before the confluence, fer a quick getaway."
joriandrake: "perhaps we're in time for Summerfest"
chris107: "We'd be poor pickingd even for a Hagrost pirate. There's only Phill here worth anything."
joriandrake: "or Sommerfest"
chris107: "Maybe cover your head while we get past. Philly?"
joriandrake: "Don't belittel Phily's worth. She is more than enough reason for pirates to to to capture this ship, and booty"
Smon: GM: You sail on downstream until dusk falls, the vast swathe of the Deathwood to your left, rugged peaks rising to your right. Gnarly: "Some call them Varin's Hills... others say they're the Brytalin Peaks... take yer pick. We ain't landin', anyway, is my plan."
joriandrake: "however, they don't know of her presence on the ship, and from afar we indeed look less desireable than Tarantan merchants"
chris107: "I didn't."
joriandrake: (John playfully smiled through the whole comment)
Smon: Philly: "Unless someone in Morgansfort heard you blabberin' about me, we should be safe... You didn't tell any bar wenches you rescued a princess, did you?" She looks meaningfully at Sigurd & John.
chris107: "Not that I remember. But I was very drunk most of the time."
joriandrake: "I did tell about rescuing a girl who's beauty is like that fitting or outshining royalty" John replies with a small theatrical bow
Smon: The moon rises overhead, casting silver radiance across the great waters. Gnarly yawns. "I'm going to bed - Sigurd, wake me an hour after midnight."
joriandrake: ((goddamn heat, wouldn't be surprised if a forest fire starts up here as well, and no air movement at all))
chris107: "Will do"
Sandor Sunneson: Elfis will continue to take watch
Smon: Philomena grins at John and sticks her tongue out. "Flattery will get you nowhere!" She seems to enjoy the compliment though.
Smon: Sigurd takes the tiller while Elfis sits comfortably at the prow, scanning the view.
Smon: /roll d6
Smon rolls 1d6 and gets: 4,
Smon: Philomena eats some rations then retires too as full night falls. About 10pm, Elfis spots an ancient and ivy-shrouded ruin on the north bank, among the eaves of the Dearthwood - a fallen temple, perhaps.
joriandrake: John will smalltalk with Phil and ask about her childhood at the court while taking glances at the ship's sides now and then
Sandor Sunneson: He'll point it out to Sigurd, maybe worth a look??
chris107: "On the way back perhaps. We have a princess to get home afyer all."
Smon: Then as the ship moves on, he sees a flash of reddish-orange light from within the tumbled colonnades - a campfire, most likely. Ivy shrouded crumbling steps lead down to water's edge, but no boats are visible at the stone quayside.
Smon: GM: You sail on?
Sandor Sunneson: THink so, got Princess to take home?
joriandrake: John goes to the other two and ask what they look at
chris107: (It's very tempting but my vote would be to press on)
Sandor Sunneson: there is a strange light coming from over there
joriandrake: "Ruins? Fire....hm? What are the chances the necromancer would go there?"
Sandor Sunneson: Probably very small, it's a bit of a random place to go and we just happen to follow him by chance
joriandrake: "Well, we could check it out, but I woul suggest to ask Phil about it, and only do it if she's interested too"
chris107: "More likely Purple Claw Orcs or adventurers exploring an old temple ruin."
joriandrake: "Perhaps, but if we can nick off them some healing potions it wpould be worth it"
Smon: GM: It is likely Purple Claw Orc territory.
chris107: "You seem obsessed with healing potions, John?"
Sandor Sunneson: Will they have any? Who knows?
Sandor Sunneson: I think we deliver the Princess first at Modron
chris107: "That would be wisest. What do you think Philly?"
joriandrake: "Remember how we almost died? Yes? Healing potions could help us avoid that, plus they would give us more time on a quest to stick around, might've allowed us to get o the secon girl last time to rescue her as well"
joriandrake: "Phil went to the cabin, I go ask her"
joriandrake: John goes and knocks. He will tell her about the find and that hi personally wouldn't mind checking it out, but as princess-in-escort Phil decides about it
joriandrake: his*
joriandrake: (argh - he, i mess up even the correction)
Smon: "Come in..." Philly looks up sleepily from her bed as John enters, her adventurer garb folded neatly by the bed. "A ruin? A fire? Sounds interesting... *yawn*... but we need to ask my father for help against the Old Island Fortress... and the Necromancer, if we can find him..."
joriandrake: "Allrighty, then I tell the others we won't stop now. Have a good night Philly"
joriandrake: John goes back and shares the reply with the others
chris107: Sig goes back to sailing. Whistling an old Skandik sea shanty quietly.
Sandor Sunneson: Cool, on we go
Smon: GM: You sail on - midnight comes & John is feeling sleepy, does he go to bed?
chris107: "Wakeold Gnarly on your way if you would?"
Smon: There's only 2 little 'cabins' BTW, Philly's & Gnarly's, & Gnarly has the only bed.
joriandrake: He is still concerned about the pirates, so he will go a round on the deck to look at the seas then go to bed
joriandrake: or rather
joriandrake: in this case he will go to Phillys cabin and lie on the floor
Sandor Sunneson: We'll wake you if the pirates come, or maybe they'll wake you with the comotion
joriandrake: (using bedroll)
chris107: "Elfis, would you go get Gnarley for me please? I need to turn in."
Sandor Sunneson: Elfis will continue to look for potential encounters
Smon: John goes back into Philly's room (usually a store for lobster pots & such), Gnarly kindly cleared it for your use) and lays his bedrolll out beside hers as she slumbers, a bare shoulder peeking over the top of her blanket.
Sandor Sunneson: Sure, Elfis will go and wake Gnarly up
chris107: "Thanks."
Smon: Elfis shakes the snoring Gnarly awake with some difficulty. "Er - wot? Ain't time yet! Is it?"
Smon: Gnarly grimaces.
Smon: /roll d6
Sandor Sunneson: Unfortunatly Mr G :), Elfis will offer him a hand up
Smon rolls 1d6 and gets: 3,
Sandor Sunneson: All quiet so far
joriandrake: He won't disturb her sleep, but if it looks like the blanket slips off he will correct/tuck it if that is possible without waking her
chris107: Once relieved Sig goes and plonks himself in Gnarley's cot.
joriandrake: (Doesn't mean John won't look at her tho)
Smon: Elfis gets a grumbling Gnarly up & on deck. Once he's at the tiller Sigurd heads for a nice Gnarly-warmed bed at the rear of the boat.
Smon: John looks at the Princess, her blonde hair sprayed over the rough pillow formed of homespun rolled fabric. As the blanket seems to be slipping off her shoulder he reaches over & grasps, pulls it up a bit.. John roll d% check
Smon: 1d100
joriandrake rolls 1d100 and gets: 15,
Smon: John succeeds at the 'delicate task'  (pg 15 S&W) and Philly slumbers on unawares.
Smon: GM - Day 2: Dawn comes early this near midsummer, a hot sun rising over the east horizon. Will be a warm day on the Roglaroon.
Sandor Sunneson: Elfis will continue to take watch
joriandrake: (If this were an anime she still would end up in the morning on top of John's bed while asleep - rolling there in dream or such)
chris107: Sig scratches and goes to give Gnarley a break.
Smon: John & Philly wake up - Philly waits until John is dressed & out of the cabin before she dresses. After breakfast a grouchy Gnarly goes back to bed for a bit, allowing Sigurd to take the tiller, while Elfis still sits at the prow, showing no sign of fatigue. Philly approaches Sigurd: "I can take the tiller - in Modron even princesses know how to sale. And my mother the Queen is Iris Van Kennis of Croy, a great sea-mage."
chris107: "Thanks Philly."
Sandor Sunneson: Elfis will go and have a rest for a bit
joriandrake: (That's a great idea, a ship is worth a lot, if she can sell it that's perfect)
chris107: "I'll watch while Elfis sleeps then."
Sandor Sunneson: Very queiet so far
Smon: GM: You sail on, this stretch of river is wild on both banks. Gnarly: "Less traffic than usual - must be the war with the Skandiks... the Overlord's fleet is out fighting them..." he eyes the north bank. "Lets the orcs and goblins and pirates come out to play. Hopefully not with us."
joriandrake: "DoN't the pirates also have something like a great leader, or a Pirate King? If yes, would that fight the Skandiks or pillage skandik shores while the war rages?"
chris107: "Pirates are river rats. Rats don't fight wolves."
joriandrake: John has a piece of dried jerky in hand he bits off now and then
joriandrake: "Rats can stil lgo for a kill if the enemy is bleeding and weakened. Or go to the wolf lair and loot it"
chris107: "Alkazad may be a nutter but believe me you wouldn't want to fight him."
Smon: Elfis retires...
Gnarly newly emerged from catnap nods to John, puffing on his pipe. "Aye, a Pirate Queen I hear - they're all the rage. Murizhpal, Queen of the Hagrost, and her Captains, Vergau and Shurralt. Black hearted villains all!" Philly nods sobrely.
It's a little before noon & Sigurd is on watch when he sees a big merchant ship approaching fast from upriver, right behind you - better steer aside or looks like she'll ram you in the stern!
chris107: He takes appropriate action.
joriandrake: "I sure doN't intend to" John grins "Then again, pirates doN't have to directly fight the skandik forces if they can pillage their shores or capture their supply ships"
joriandrake: "Imagine the mess that would happen if the ships with the payment for the soldiers get constantly captured by pirates"
chris107: "It's a long way to the Long Ship Havens from the Hagrost.
Smon: Gnarly: "Skandiks and Hagrost pirates ain't friends, nor are the Tarantine pirates with neither of 'em..." Gnarly watches as Sigurd goes to Philly at the stern and helps her take quick evasive action, in towards the north shore.
Smon: /roll d6
Smon rolls 1d6 and gets: 4,
Smon: The merchant passes you by, several figures in black cowled robes marked with red runes watching you from the deck - Hamarkhite Priests, servants of the death god.
joriandrake: John looks at Philly, thanks the gods there is no big traffic, and then goes and chcks out the merchant ship
joriandrake: "One weird merchant crew that" John remarks
chris107: "Yeah, a nasty looking bunch."
Sandor Sunneson: Elfis awake again thinks they don't llool llike much fun
Smon: John eyes the swift-passing ship - a regular merchant of the City State or Warwik most likely, though the gaggle of sinister passengers is notable.
Smon: /roll d6
Smon rolls 1d6 and gets: 4,
Smon: Many 4s this evening
Smon: /roll d8
Smon rolls 1d8 and gets: 6,
joriandrake: "They might be selling corpses?" as he says this he notices the other ship "so many ships with nasty looking crews, any one of these ships might be a disguised pirate vessel'"
Smon: Philly: "Hamarkhis - God of Murder. His hunger for human sacrifices is insatiable - I expect they're looking for slaves, captives from the war perhaps, to bring back to their temple."
chris107: "They'll get none from this vessel." Growls Sigurd.
Smon: She grimaces. "Next to Set the Accursed, Hamarkhis is the vilest of all evil gods."
chris107: Sigurd makes the sign to ward off evil and spits into the river.
Smon: The faster vessel slowly disappears from view ahead.
joriandrake: "Eh. I prefer gods of love and sex. Why can't there be one that builds temples for praising love and lust?"
joriandrake: "NO human sacrifices would be needed either, not in the normal meaning at least. A win-win for all involved"
Smon: Philomena giggles. "There is, of course! Aphrodite, some call her."
joriandrake: "Meh, she could qualify I suppose, but I thought she's mostly a goddess of beauty. Not that I object to that. There's something divine in just silently watching some beautiful hing sleeping besider you while the moonlight shines though a cabin window"
Smon: GM: That afternoon you pass the confluence of the Roglaroon with Brytalin's Stream, pass a few small fishing boats down from Varin's Firth fishing the deeper waters of the Roglaroon. Gnarly waves cordial greeting to a pair of equally venerable fellows on the nearest boat.
joriandrake: thing*
Smon: /roll 3d6
Smon rolls 3d6 and gets: 1, 1, 4, = 6
Smon: Philomena eyes John. "Last night I had a dream... in my dream I was at a grand ball, but my dress was falling from my shoulders... and a handsome prince came and saved me with his hand..."
Sandor Sunneson: Elfis watches guard again thinking about a crying hound dog
Sandor Sunneson: that ain't never caught a rabbit
Smon: She looks away, over at the fishing boats. "If they're out fishing, it must be pretty safe."
Sandor Sunneson: How far we from Modron Gnarly?
Sandor Sunneson: Elfis asks?
joriandrake: "You don't say. Must've been a chanming and clever prince then, with nimble fingers." John looks into her eyes with a smug face
Smon: Gnarly calls out: "How goes it friends?! Good fishin'?" They nod. "Aye, fellow! Watch out ahead though, there may be pirates about!" Gnarly nods.
joriandrake: charming*
Smon: Gnarly: "Half way there now - hundred and thirty, hundred and twenty miles, thereabouts."
chris107: Sigurd pretends to puke over the gunwalls as he listens to them.
chris107: "We have made excellent time, Gnarly."
joriandrake: John looks for a spot on the ship where there's no lookout for that direction yet
Smon: Philly looks back at John with eyebrow raised. "Oh yes. Very charming. Quite swept me away. We lived happily ever after..."
She sighs, looking downriver.
"Most likely my father will send me back to Huberic the Vast, Tyrant of Haghill."
joriandrake: jOHN STOPS
joriandrake: (caps)
chris107: "We can always rescue you again if you like?"
Smon: Gnarly nods to Sigurd. "Aye well, downriver is no bother - gettin' back, that's the real trick."
Sandor Sunneson: Why you going back to your father if that's what he's going to do?
joriandrake: Philly, it is your life. You decide if you let your father dictate your future, or if you take command of it" John says this with a serious tone without looking back a tthe woman, then continues to look for his spot as lookout
chris107: "If it helps I can knock you over the head first?"
joriandrake: (lol)
Smon: Philly listens to the trio of adventurers, sighs.

"I... I don't think I'm cut out to be an adventurer like you three. I nearly died! And I was so afraid.... And I need to tell my father what I sensed on the Island Fortress..."
Smon: She giggles at Sigurd's offer.
"That's very kind of you!"
chris107: "Fine. But just let me know."
chris107: "I'm a very kind fellow you know?"
chris107: Sigurd treats the boat to a bawdy Skandik drinking song to pass the time.
Smon: GM: After a long hot afternoon, that evening you approach the islands around the confluence of the Roglaroon with the Hagrost, a favourite hunting ground of the river pirates... here and there you make out the bleached wrecks of ships run aground and scuttled on the islands.
chris107: he seams to know a lot of them.
chris107: But quietens as danger looms.
Smon: Philomena smiles warmly at Sigurd, enjoying his ability to relieve the tension, until evening comes.
At the tiller, Gnarly steers towards the north bank, a narrow channel unsuitable for big merchant ships, close to the green Dearthwood.
joriandrake: John stops again, and this time turns to gaze into her eyes. "YOu weren't the only one who enarly died. We constantly live with the risk of death, no matter where we live. If you're a princess you have risks like being poisoned, ambushed on your journey to another city, cursed, or whatever. A peasantwoman would have the risk of dying from a cow kicking her in the head, illness, goblins attacking her village, or whatever. An adventuress risks being killed by countless more interesting things in more interesting ways at least, and an adventuress decides for herlself where to go to risk her life, and with whom. There is no father dictating for such as we what, how, where, and with whom to do. Even as princess if you want to splay by some of the traidtional game rules yo ucan still make the best out of it, even cheat. That is, if you're willing to dare to take your life in your own hands instead of letting others decide your future"
Smon: Gnarly: "Pirates like to hide out in the south channels, shouldna be going in here... but look out fer orcs!"
chris107: Sig keps his eyes peeled and his hand close to his sword.
Smon: OK John can roll a Save to persuade Philomena, that's a d20, high is good. Needs 13+
Sandor Sunneson: Elfis gets his bow ready
Smon: GM: The boat slows as it enters the sluggish waters of the north channel, less than a hundred feet from the shore.
Smon: /roll d6
Smon rolls 1d6 and gets: 5,
joriandrake: save? no midifiers like from Cha then?
joriandrake rolls 1d20 and gets: 8,
joriandrake: nvm
Smon: CHA 12 gets no mod - Philomena listens to the speech but shakes her head. "I'm sorry."
chris107: "Looks like I'm bashing you over the head and dragging you to the boat by your hair."
Smon: /roll d20
chris107:
Smon rolls 1d20 and gets: 10,
Sandor Sunneson: lol
joriandrake: "It's your life" John shrugs. "Even the decision to give your future to others to decide about is your choice to make." he looks somewhat disappointed
Smon: GM: You navigate successfully through the channel and are coming back out onto open water... night is falling...
Smon: /roll d6
Smon rolls 1d6 and gets: 5,
chris107: Same sleep/watch patters?
chris107: patterns
Sandor Sunneson: Sure
Smon: In the twilight you don't see the galley heading upriver towards you until it's almost too late - the ship is crammed with rowers, the figurehead like a demonic horned angel.
chris107: "By Thor!"
joriandrake: The merchant ship for the goat shaggers
Smon: As a sleepy Gnarley yanks on the tiller, the demon-prowed galley ship turns to intercept - you see she has a light ram just at the surface, the kind designed to 'grab' rather than shatter a target ship, allowing her crew to board.
Smon: Gnarley: "Sigurd! Aid me!"
chris107: Sigurd's sword slithers from it's scabbard.
chris107: But he throws himself against the tiller to help the old man
Smon: The other ship must have only just spotted you too, when you were almost past, but now you hear howls from the decks, and barbaric looking figures waving hooked axes and serrated blades - river pirates!
chris107: "Shoot at the buggers! Drive them off!"
joriandrake: John positions himself in the previously found 'ideal' spot to snipe with a bow from
Smon: GM: OK Sigurd can roll a Save to evade the pirate ship, +3 for STR, +2 for Skandik.
Sandor Sunneson: Elfis gets his bow ready, to snipe at the horned devil
Smon: Elfis shoots at the figurehead?
chris107 rolls 1d20+5 and gets: 16, (+5) = 21
chris107: yay!
Sandor Sunneson: Bloody hell Chris not a 1!!
joriandrake: John will wrap the arrows and oil them, then use the fire arrows to shoot at the enemy sails
chris107: Makes a nice change, Ferg
Smon: The little boat executes a daring turn, sweeping past the pirate galley almost in touch of its oars!
joriandrake: john still shoots an arrow like that, just to try it out
joriandrake rolls 1d20+1 and gets: 7, (+1) = 8
Smon: Elfis & John can roll init, if you win you can shoot at them as you go past.
joriandrake: (eh, damn rolls, at least not an 1)
Smon: /roll d6x6
Smon Rolls 1d6x6 and gets:
5 = 5
5 = 5
1 = 1
2 = 2
1 = 1
1 = 1
joriandrake: Sandor - init
Sandor Sunneson rolls 1d20 and gets: 11,
Smon: Several arrows and throwing javelins come in your direction from angry pirates... you get +4 AC (max 20) from the conditions.
Smon: init roll d6 plus 1 if DEX 13+, need 4+

Sandor Sunneson: DEX 11
Sandor Sunneson rolls 1d6 and gets: 5,
joriandrake: so not even a d20 then
joriandrake rolls 1d6+1 and gets: 3, (+1) = 4
Sandor Sunneson: what you whinging about Jorian? You still won lol
joriandrake: I just noted that I don't even get what dices we're supposed to use :/
Sandor Sunneson Rolls 1d20+1x3 and gets:
10 (+1) = 11
3 (+1) = 4
9 (+1) = 10
Smon: OK you can both shoot at the pirates with bows ready to shoot at you... AC 14 to hit
Sandor Sunneson: all miss
Smon: John gets 2 shots
joriandrake: fire arrow attempts at the enemy sails
Smon: 1 shot then
joriandrake Rolls 1d20+1x2 and gets:
6 (+1) = 7
14 (+1) = 15
joriandrake: why 1 shot? isn't that just meaning a larger target for the 2 arrows?
joriandrake: nvm
joriandrake: first roll matters in thsi case, thus miss
joriandrake: *this
Smon: John sets an arrow alight with a swatch of oily cotton (taking half the round) & shoots, hits the ship's black sail.
Smon: /roll d20
Smon rolls 1d20 and gets: 6,
joriandrake: (oh, actually hit it)
Smon: The arrow catches & the sail starts to burn, though this won't make much difference to the oared galley.
Smon: /roll d6x4
Smon Rolls 1d6x4 and gets:
1 = 1
4 = 4
1 = 1
5 = 5
joriandrake: (i know of the oars, but this was done as distraction, so they stop hunting our ship and start caring for the fires)
Smon: /roll d2x2
Smon Rolls 1d2x2 and gets:
2 = 2
1 = 1
Smon: shots at: Gnarley, Philly, John & Elfis, nice & even
Smon: /roll d20+1x4
Smon Rolls 1d20+1x4 and gets:
17 (+1) = 18
3 (+1) = 4
2 (+1) = 3
20 (+1) = 21
Smon: Elfis takes a crit!
joriandrake: 1 and 4
Smon: /roll 2d6
Smon rolls 2d6 and gets: 3, 6, = 9
chris107: ouch
Smon: 9 dmg to Elfis
Sandor Sunneson: 3 left
Smon: /roll d6x2
Smon Rolls 1d6x2 and gets:
1 = 1
6 = 6
Smon: sorry just one - Gnarley is skimmed for 1 dmg. "Ouch!"
Smon: He swiftly retires below decks, leaving Sigurd on the tiller.
chris107: "Can we outrun them, Gnarley?"
chris107:
chris107: Sigurd will try, sheathing his sword for now.
Smon: "Aye! Keep to the mid current!"
joriandrake: "Sigurd, you got the command!"
joriandrake: With Gnarley out Sigurd is the most sea-wolfy here
chris107: Sigurd does as instructed. Trusting to quiet and the darkness to aid their escape.
Smon: GM: As you sail on the galley makes a half hearted attempt to turn, and in the dark you see the flames spreading on their sail, but you are leaving them well behind.
Smon: After about 20 minutes you're well away and they're out of sight, though they are much faster and could catch you on the pursuit.
joriandrake: "well, better late than never. Now they HAVE to try stop the fire instead of us"
Smon: Philomena scans upriver. "No sign of them..." Elfis' night-tuned eyes concur.
Smon: "But you've angered them now. If they are following, they're bound to catch us before dawn."
joriandrake: "Well, they got oars and are angry, so we better keep, or even raise speed anyway"
Sandor Sunneson: Elfis will rest to recoup HP
Smon: Elfis goes below decks.
joriandrake: "I think it was worth to anger them. I made such a nice campfire"
Smon: Where Gnarley is patching his wounded arm. "You too, eh?"
joriandrake: "Can you plase see if ELfis needs healing" John asks Phil
joriandrake: (sorry... very tired, I neede to drop out, we play in the morning anyway)
Smon: Philly: "Maybe... certainly delayed them... but they are vengeful sorts. And they know they can catch us... I wonder if.... if we should hide?" She points to the Dearthwood bank. "We could get the boat ashore in there, hide while they went past."
chris107: (High level game in the morning?)
Smon: OOC can stop in 5 mins
chris107: Sig tries to estimate how many pirates would have been on board?
Smon: Phily looks a little pale & tense, but goes below decks. "Elfis, let me..." she touches his arm, and warmth spreads.
joriandrake: "Let's discuss the hiding option with the others, although I am in favor of just moving on, the pirates might be angry bot they don't know how many other ships we might meet so they can't be certain that without sails they continues to have the avantage"
Smon: Looked like 18-20 oars on a side, plus 12-14 warriors not rowing. Call it 48+.
chris107: Hmmmm too many to fight then...
Smon: That's pirates.
Sandor Sunneson: Thank you Philly
Smon: /roll d6+1
Smon rolls 1d6+1 and gets: 1, (+1) = 2
chris107: Sigurd is for pushing on at best speed and hping we meet friendlier vessels ahead. Maybe even ones from Modron?
Smon: "Sorry, that's all I can do." Philly looks a little embarrassed as the wound only heals 2 hp.
Sandor Sunneson: He'll rcontinue to rest and hopefully have more in the morning
chris107: Sig steels himself for a long night.
Smon: OOC: Chris if you can't do Tuesday, is Monday good for everyone next S&W?
chris107: Monday is good for me.
Smon: XP You can have +300 each.
chris107: (Though would prefer an early finish)
joriandrake: ask me tomorrow, can't think well anymore
Sandor Sunneson: I've got an audit near Whitby, so if I have report written up yes\
Sandor Sunneson: 3049 XP
chris107: What time do we play tomorrow?
Smon: Can do Monday 7pm, pool closes 6.30pm anyway.
Smon: Tomorrow is 09:30am ok?
Smon: Later means Bill misses less of it.
chris107: 930 fine with me
Sandor Sunneson: Sure, see you then
Sandor Sunneson: sleep well folkd
joriandrake: just be careful not to overextend yourself again, and I would prefer if we could continue with the 5th edition campaign a bit more, Prisha & Sandor's adventures is the main reason I joined
chris107: Thanks for the game Simon. See you all in the morning.
joriandrake: 930 or 10 is ok
Sandor Sunneson: Thanks GM, see you all shortly
Sandor Sunneson: 9.30
joriandrake: bye, gn all
