Lucy the slave girl |
Purple Claw Orc |
chris107: Sigurd looks at his empty purse. "A fair breeze would blow this back to Sea Rune."
chris107: He will also search for any broken pieces of glass he can find. Bottles, broken windows what ever is about.
Smon: 26/6/4448 BCCC, 5 days after your return from the Old Island fortress. Princess Filly is keen to go back there soon and investigate the evil she sensed lurking in the tunnels under the ruins. In Morgansfort, Lorynn the Innkeep of the Iron Helm Inn has taken a break from running Filly free baths 'on the house' to go up to the City State in search of a couple buxom serving slaves for the Inn, his only employee having recently married a local farmer and left. In his absence Lorynn's sister Lianna, the wife of Garnoth the owner of the adjacent Toothless Dragon, has been running the Iron Helm, aided by her daughters clumsy Louise & buxom Irene, who seems to like Sigurd...
Smon: /roll d6
Smon rolls 1d6 and gets: 6,
chris107: Sigurd will be happy to 'entertain' them both.
chris107: "And I'll be happy to chop up some evil stuff for you too, Filly!"
chris107: he waves his foaming tankard of alearound to show how.
Smon: Lianna and Garnoth seem to keep their daughters on a tight leash, any more than the lightest flirting sees them shooed away from the Skandik. In the castle yard one late afternoon, Sigurd is looking around when he finds a tiny piece of well worn brown glass lying amidst the gravel. As he bends down to pick it up, he sees Philomena coming over from the local temple. "Hi Sigurd - what you have there ...?" Suddenly there is a commotion from the direction of the Morgansfort main gate; a guard is yelling.
chris107: "Why we could stick that big table down the hole and slide down."
chris107: He slips it into his pocket
chris107: "Let's wait and see what we have in private, eh?"
Smon: Philomena nods. Round the stable block, from the direction of the gatehouse, comes Lorynn the Innkeep, looking considerably worse for wear and supported by two men at arms!
chris107: "Let's go see if he's okay."
Smon: Lorynn calls out to Sigurd, Philly and a couple locals in the yard: "Orcs! Orcs on the road!"
chris107: "What happened, Lorynn?"
chris107: "How many and which direction?"
Smon: Map - you are in the Square currently - https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJjFs6Umft9mfMadmsYJJalM-jMUOIWBNHl1MOM8Rvd5Py4dOdo89xf4misGetjyVCkffEim52s-2Rbx94Kd5mFgaRHRqsLyX0bVCqexGy6cxqHSilPPHIhJx_5aMmGBDYlcTgGH0vUxo/s640/Morgansfort+Keep.bmp
Smon: Lorynn: "North of here - only a few miles! Wild Orcs of the Purple Claw! They attacked me wagon, stole me new slaves! Oh, woe!"
Smon: Philly grimaces, gripping her new mace hilt. "Time to pay Lorynn back for all those free baths I suppose..."
chris107: "How many and how long ago? We'll go get 'em for you!2
chris107: "Aye, lass."
Smon: "Six, eight - lots! Fierce brutes, snouts like pigs! Someone fetch Bailiff Tomandy!"
chris107: "Let's get after them, Filly. "
Smon: Lorynn looks hopefully at Sigurd: "Fifty gold and a room for a month if ye get my slaves back afore the Orcs eat em!"
Smon: Filly nods. "I'll grab my pack..."
chris107: "You're on!"
chris107: Sig grabs his stuff
Smon: GM: Sigurd & Filly grab their gear, including a couple of Gnarly's torches, while Lorynn goes to tell the Bailiff what happened - knowing Tomandy he'll waste no time in filing a report in triplicate for the Baron up in the CSIO...
chris107: hehe
chris107: "Wish us luck!"
chris107: "Send our friends along if you see them!"
Smon: Louise & Irene blow kisses to brave Sigurd, while the guards at the gate wish you good luck with a jovial wave. "We'll send your friends on!" Heading north out of Morgansfort in the late afternoon sun, the trail heads north past the local farms, the great Roglaroon to your east (the mighty Dearthwood just visible on the far bank) and the wooded Morgan's ridge to the west shielding the road from the vast Mermist swamps beyond.
chris107: (nice)
chris107: Sig keeps a keen eye out
Smon: Some 5 miles north of the Morgansfort, you come across what is clearly Lorynn's wagon, stripped bare of loot. His ox lies slaughtered, most of the flesh butchered off. Flies have settled on the bloody corpse, and a clear blood trail leads west towards the ridgeline. There are orc tracks too, at least half a dozen.
chris107: "Come, let's follow."
chris107: Sig watches the tracks to make sure none veer off in ambush
Smon: You follow the tracks, Philomena now looking tense, alert for possible ambush. The trail leads west up into the woods, and within a mile of the ambush site you see it heads up the slope of a small round hill atop the ridge, towards a darkened cave entrance from which a thin smoke trail wafts.
Smon: Filly: "In there... They're careless! Hope they're cooking beef not slave right now..."
chris107: Any signs of movement other than the smoke?
Smon: You would need to get closer to the cave to see in; you don't see any movement outside the cave. No mounds of debris so the orcs can't have been here long.
chris107: "You have a grim sense of humour, Filly!" he grins
Smon: Filly eyes Sigurd and grins back. "You Skandiks like it grim I hear!"
chris107: Working our way around, so as not to be seen from the entrance we creep up.
chris107: "True words."
chris107: He says a prayer to Thor for victory in battle.
Smon: GM: Working your way round west of the cave mouth, where the cover is best, you approach through thick thorny vegetation, getting a few scratches despite your stout hauberks.
chris107: Staying low and quiet. Trying to ignore the stinging cuts.
chris107: Ears pricked up for the slightest sound.
Smon: GM: You reach the smoky cave mouth and look in... The cave runs NW about 20' or so then opens out into a wider area, with several side caves to N NW and SW. Three fat-bellied orc females are roasting spitted ox parts over a central fire pit that illuminates the scene, while several male orcs lounge around gorging on half cooked beef.
Smon: /roll d6
Smon rolls 1d6 and gets: 4,
chris107: How far to the nearest males?
Smon: They don't seem to have spotted you; this time of day orcs tend to be sleeping, when not having a victory feast.
Smon: The nearest two males slumped on boulders are about 20' or so from you, within charge range. You count three more visible, a sixth out of sight to the left.
chris107: Whispers quietly to Filly (Maybe we should wait until they are all gorged out and sleepy?"
chris107: "Or do you want to strike hard and fast now? I could probably have one or two down before they know what hit them."
Smon: Filly whispers back: "Longer we wait, more chance they'll spot us - or eat the prisoners..."
chris107: "I was hoping you'd say that. Remember their women folk are dangerous too. You slay them and I'll sort out the boys. One three. one...two..."
chris107: "three..." he hsisses quietly and leaps into action, bringing his braod blade around in an arc to chop the closest in two!
Smon: GM: Orcs look up groggily as the savage Skandik is upon them! You get Surprise (2 attacks) and attack at +2 vs the sitting orcs, who are AC 12.
chris107: Let's see if Thor likes Sigurd then

chris107: "Light a torch and stay behind me." (Got you, still nice damage
chris107: He cautiously looks south where he thought one may be lurking.
Smon: Dead orc warriors lie scattered across the cave. From down the north tunnel you hear a great deep voice - deeper than an Orc - call out: "Ere? Wotz goin' on?!"
Smon: NW tunnel sorry
chris107: "If there are too many, Philly. You must run back to town. I'll hold them off."
Smon: Looks like you killed the one that was out of sight initially.
chris107: Sigurd runs to the side wall of that passage hoping to surprise anything coming out.
chris107: (using poor Philly as bait?)
Smon: Sigurd runs to the side wall, while Philly holds up her torch. You hear a heavy tread then in the light of the roasting fire & torch, you see the massive form of a knobble-hided, fur clad ogre come tromping down the tunnel...
Smon: /roll d6
Smon rolls 1d6 and gets: 6,

Smon: The spear hits the massive beast in the neck (6 dmg) as Sigurd slashes at its thighs.
chris107: "Nice shop Philly!"
chris107: shot even
Smon: No man would stand after such wounds, but the wounded ogre just roars, swinging its massive club at Sigurd.

Smon Rolls 1d20x6 and gets:

7 = 7
16 = 16
4 = 4
16 = 16
7 = 7
Smon: He sees Philly lying beside him in the semi-darkness, still unconscious & looking very pale.
chris107: Can he see any sign of Orcs or Ogres?
Smon: In the strange dim reddish light he sees his surroundings have changed - it looks like a prison cell?
chris107: He gingerly touches the ruins of his once splendid nose.
chris107: And sees if he can move his limbs?
Smon: His ribs are broken, skull likely cracked - not in a good way. Then he hears a female voice: "You - you're awake! I thought you were gone for sure!" It's not Philly - turning his head - which almost makes him pass out - Sigurd catches sight of a chained, near-naked very shapely female figure kneeling towards the back of the cell, looking at him with concern.
Smon: Sigurd's arms move weakly (you're incapacitated).
chris107: He gives her his best grin.
chris107: "Nothing a kiss won't put right."
chris107: "oww that really hurts when I smile."
Smon: The girl seems oddly familiar to Sigurd, as if he'd seen her in another life? https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6oDWWfvC9rAmlUjSOLPKu3tcoiQL8tVcFw_5wlQJ6EYwVr-0USwQPVQUnlcW8VeJgmtRfpiYK9aAycSyADiJ9Zyhw1qgb3z1qiIsQRm96Uj7rGxOO5pWfyNua_k6Qi1n47FeqGIgDepM/s1600/93_53.jpg
She moves towards Sigurd as far as her ankle chain will allow, offering a cup of water. "Here, drink... I'm Lucy."
chris107: She is familiar..
chris107: "Well hello Lucy. Just how deep is the shit that I'm in?"
Smon: Lucy looks at sleeping Philomena, back to Sigurd. "The Necromancer's minions brought you here an hour ago - I fear he plans to turn us all into zombies!"
chris107: He drinks thirstily and thanks her for her kindness
chris107: "The Ogre and the witch orc?"
chris107: "How many others?"
chris107: (The pale man he thinks)
chris107: "Poor old Philly. Even an old lord's bed is better than this."
Smon: Lucy shakes her head. "The orcs brought us here - but the dead men - the zombies - took us to these cells. Then they came and took Malene for the ceremony, just after you were brought here."
chris107: "If only we could get Philly awake. She has power over such creatures."
Smon: GM: "Four zombies, at least. And the Necromancer." It looks as if the red light is filtering through the rusty bars of the prison cell from a torch out of your line of sight.
chris107: He searches through his pockets for the brown stone..
Smon: /roll d6
Smon rolls 1d6 and gets: 1,
Smon: Sigurd notices something odd about the stones at the back of the prison cell.
chris107: can he crawl to them?
Smon: Yes, you can move slowly.
Smon: Philomena groans, beginning to recover consciousness.
chris107: he does so, checking out the token he found earlier.
Smon: Sigurd staggers over to the back of the cell, noting that his sword is gone.
chris107: He tries not to cry out at the pain in his shattered body.
Smon: The piece of brown glass - the bottle end - looks black in the dim light.
Smon: Sigurd makes out the telltale form of a hidden door in the back wall, looks as if the protruding stone in NE corner is the opening 'button'.
chris107: He looks through the bottom of the bottle at the flickering torchlight. Then crawls to inspect the odd looking stones
Smon: It is poorly fitted, but he was still lucky to spot it.
chris107: Can Lucy reach it?
Smon: Lucy: "Oh yes, some kind of door there... Pity they chained me to the wall or I'd have tried it."
Smon: She tugs forlornly at her ankle chain.
chris107: "I do not know if the Gods have left me the strength but I will give my last ounce of strength to break your chains. If you will get Philly to safety?"
Smon: Lucy nods. Philly groans again, her eyes fllickering open. "Bloody orc hit me!"
chris107: "Philly! Thank Odin you live!
chris107: He fills her in on what's happening. Zombies and such.
Smon: Sigurd notes Lucy wears a slave collar - likely one of Lorynn's new purchases. Philly smiles weakly. "Modron protects... I hope."
chris107: And crawls towards Lucy. Determined to give his all to free her.
Smon: Lucy: "The Necromancer plans to make Malene his corpse-bride - he said so! He'll probably turn us into zombies, too."
chris107: "It will be over my dead body."
Smon: GM: The stonework is red sandstone bricks, not too hard. Even in his weakened state Sigurd might be able to pull the chain free from the wall.
chris107: He wraps Lucy's chains around his thick wrists and strong hands.
chris107: Braces hsi feet against the wall where it's fixed and heaves with all his might.
Smon: GM: Lucy grabs the chain too, pulling it taught. Together you heave...
Smon: ok roll d6, 1-4 pass
chris107 rolls 1d6 and gets: 4,
chris107: just!
Smon: With a pop, the chain comes free of the wall!
chris107: He lays flat on his back, gasping for air.
Smon: Philly checks herself over. "No mace... wait.."
chris107: "Just get out through that door." He points to the mechanism.
Smon: She reaches down her front, pulls out the Modron amulet. "I hope this can overcome the Necromancer's evil..."
Smon: Lucy stands and pushes the protrusion - the door squeaks open, revealing a lightless tunnel beyond.
Smon: Lucy gulps. "Could go anywhere..."
chris107: "We must leave now. I have not the strength to battle further."
chris107: "Worse than been a zombie bride? Can you reach the torches outside now?"
Smon: Philly tries to reach the torch sconce round the corner from your cell.
Smon: /roll 3d6
Smon rolls 3d6 and gets: 3, 3, 1, = 7
Smon: She works the torch free, pulling it in triumph back through the bars!
chris107: "Does the door look as if it can be closed from within?"
Smon: Now the torch illuminates the secret tunnel - it appears to be about 20' long, opening into a wider space beyond.
Smon: Yes you could enter the tunnel then push the secret door closed behind you.
Smon: Philly: "Wait... I feel something..."
Smon: GM: Gonna give XP now
chris107: "Quickly then. Both of you in before the zombies return."
Smon: Philly needs level 2 !
chris107:
Smon: GM: The girls hurry into the tunnel, Sigurd closing the door behind them - with him in the tunnel?
chris107: Yes
chris107: he keeps hold of the brown glass. Reluctant to part with the trinket.
Smon: OK. Sigurd gets 850 XP
Smon: Philly's talisman seems to be glowing.
chris107: 893 with 5%
chris107: 3151
Smon: /roll d6
Smon rolls 1d6 and gets: 5,
Smon: Philomena: "The blessing of Modron!"
Smon: "Wait, let me try to heal you Sigurd..."
chris107: "You have that power?" He looks a bit awed
Smon: (Philly is currently on 0 hp Cleric-2 so can cast clwx2 but will be exhausted afterwards)
Smon: "I do now!"
Smon: GM: Roll 2d6+2 for her healing on Sigurd
chris107 rolls 2d6+2 and gets: 4, 5, (+2) = 11
chris107: +2!
Smon: 2 hp!!
Smon: I still advise not fighting anything, you have a 2 hp slave girl, a 0 hp Cleric w spells used up and a 2 hp unarmed Fighter
chris107: Feeling Modron's power infuse him, his bones knitting and his wounds closing, he supports the exhausted priestess.
chris107: Well it's better than it was 20 minutes ago!
chris107: A nice session. Thank you.
Smon: GM: The three escapees head down the tunnel... will stop there.
chris107: Shame Ferg and Jorian couldn't make it.
chris107: Very enjoyable
Smon: GM: The adventure does specifically say they subdue captives & put them in the jail and that it's escapable, kind adventure writer eh
chris107: Yeah, we like this fellow
Smon: Chris Gonnerman, Solomoriah on DF
chris107: Now i better get to bed. 5 hours sleep then up again
Smon: Good night!
chris107: oh, cool
chris107: G'night and thanks again. I'll watch the thread for next game.
