Smon: The Amazons of St Ulther's Ligthouse have not been troubled by ogres, either they have abandoned Erdea Manor or are lying low.
chris107: Quick question Simon, regarding the swapping of spells when a character levels. Does this include Cantrips?

Smon: I'd normally let you swap out a character element when levelling + long rest so you can swap a cantrip Mordred.

Smon: GM: You can use the Lighthouse as a base, from there it's only 5 miles west through the hills to the manor ruins.

Smon: GM: 9/6/48 A bright and sunny morning as three adventurers trek west from the Lighthouse up into the hills.
Smon: You are about a mile or so east of the Manor ruins when you see ahead a sleek silver fox perched atop an ancient rune-carved stone just off the trail, watching you.
chris107: "Well that's something you don't see evry day."
chris107: Mordred salutes it.
JamesDevil: "hopefully its a good omen
Keelia: Bright Star's ears perk forward, curious.
Smon: Mordred salutes. The fox eerily raises a paw!
chris107: "Winter foxes are considered very lucky in Valon."
chris107: "Hello master fox!"
Keelia: Her ears fold back, staring hard at the fox
JamesDevil: *Danor nods his head at the Fox*
Smon: The fox looks a little nervous as it glances back through the trees. In the distance you see a thin trail of smoke, as from a chimney fire.
Smon: The fox looks in the direction of the smoke, then back to you.
JamesDevil: which direction? towards our destination?
chris107: "Trouble? Can we help?"
Keelia: Bright Star sighs. "Bright Star believes we are expected."
chris107: "Take us there."
JamesDevil: "lets investigate"
Smon: No, the smoke trail is about a half mile south off the road.
chris107: Mordred fastens his shield to his arm and draws his enchanted sword.
Smon: The fox nods, and starts south off the runestone, appearing to beckon you to follow.
JamesDevil: "we'll take a look anyway"
chris107: Letting Berta fly up and ahead to investigate
chris107: (Mordred's Owls are living much longer without Zagaar  )
Keelia: Bright Star follows along, bow in hand, ears perked to listen for enemies

Smon: GM: You begin to follow the fox. Berta goes ahead to investigate, then returns to report to Mordred - the smoke is coming from the chimney of a tumbledown hut in a secluded dell, surrounded by herb gardens.
chris107: "Probably a witch. Be carful not to catch warts from her." Advises mordred wisely.
Keelia: (Bright Star quietly congratulates Danor on his quieter armour)
JamesDevil: Danor casts Aid on everyone,. +5 temp hp

chris107: "Hello in the witches hut! Can we help?"
Smon: As Mordred approaches the door, he sees it slightly ajar - the interior latch appears to have been broken open. Then as he calls out he hears movement from inside, and suddenly the door is thrown open - an enormous OGRE, his hide armour covered in the pelts of silver foxes!
chris107: Berta circles the hut, about 50' up.
Keelia: Bright Star looks around for the fox then scratches her claws lightly on the door
Smon: The warty nosed ogre roars and raises a huge battle axe.

Smon: The ogre falls back, slamming the door shut behind it - Mordred just caught a glimpse of the witchy hut interior, a huge black cauldron heating in the fireplace, and racks of potions on the walls.

chris107: "Hmmmmm."
Smon: Round 2. DC 20 Athletics to push door open with ogre leaning on it.
chris107: Can I assist?
Keelia: Bright Star will hurry forward to meet the others. Is there a window she can aim through?

Smon: (not unless you explain how he can assist) While Danor is bouncing off the door, BS prises open the wooden shutter - roll Sleight of Hand BS
Smon: It's a wooden hut.
chris107: (Standing behind him driving him on with greater weight and momentum?)
Smon: The wood is greenish with lichen but still seems strong.

Smon: BS prises open the shutter. She sees into the hut - from her angle she sees the Witch, tied up and hanging upside down from a ceiling hook - she looks alive. Past the Witch she sees the wounded ogre leaning on the door.
JamesDevil: (what was the ogre wearing?)
Smon: Hide armour covered in silver fox furs like I said.
Keelia: she'll aim for the ogre

Smon: Danor & Mordred try pushing on the door together, it doesn't budge.

Smon: (it had 1 hp left!)
chris107: "My name is Mordred Midwinter. We're here to rescue you."
Smon: The silver fox trots in and looks up at the witch, who smiles back at it.
Keelia: Bright Star pops her head back up over the window frame, peering in upon hearing Mordred's voice
Smon: *mmf* says the gagged lady.
chris107: Mordred will help the witch down, been carful to avoid touching her skin.
Smon: Mordred cuts the witch down and unties, ungags her. She pats herself down.
Keelia: She'll circle back around to the door, having seen the ogre is dead
Smon: "Thank you!" she says. "I am Magdra the Potion Maker, and that is Lightning, my familiar."
Smon: She nods to you all.
chris107: "These are my friends. Brightstar and Danor, he's the one bleeding on the floor."
JamesDevil: Danor cases Cure wounds on the witch
Smon: "I'm glad Lightning found such heroic rescuers!"
JamesDevil rolls 1d8+4 and gets: 5, (+4) = 9
chris107: Mordred blushes.
Smon: "That Ogre was going to cook me in my own pot! Don't they know Witches taste terrible!"
chris107: "We are on the trail of a very nasty Ogress called Vera. I wonder if this was one of her men?"
Smon: Magdra smiles at Mordred's blushes, and thanks Danor for his cure.
JamesDevil: "well this one here thinks witches give you warts, people are generally stupid"
JamesDevil: "you are welcome"
chris107: Mordred gives the ungallant dwarf a hard stare.
Smon: Magdra nods. "I'm sure it was! Ogres have been lurking around Erdea Manor for weeks. That one was muttering to himself - said his name was Dunma the Fox Killer."
JamesDevil: well, now he is Dunma the dead
Smon: Magdra grins. "I promise not to give you warts! Would you like some Potions?"
chris107: "Look at all those poor foxes."
Keelia: Bright Star perks up. "What kind of potions have you?"
chris107: "Were they friends of yours, Lightning?"
Smon: Lightning nods sadly to Mordred.
Smon: /roll d20x3

Smon: Magdra picks three potions from the shelves. "Greater Healing... Invulnerability... Vitality!"
Smon: "Vitality is always handy, don't you think?" She winks at Mordred.

chris107: Mordred looks sadly at the little fox. "Shall we give them a decent burial?"

Keelia: "Bright Star would appreciate the Greater Healing, if she may?"
JamesDevil: thats actually a really rare potion, if your a beserker barbarian its worth its wieght it gold
Smon: Magdra passes BS the healing potion (4d4+4 hp)

Keelia: "Bright Star is grateful"
Smon: The fox looks at the silver pelts.
JamesDevil: I woulnd't mind invunrulbility

Smon: Magdra passes Danor the Invulnerability potion, like liquid iron (resist all dmg for 1 minute)

JamesDevil: Danor will take the Fox pelts and bury then outside near the edge of the woods

Smon: "This potion will remove all Exhaustion, cure all poisons and disease, and help to refresh you after your extertions, brave knight."
JamesDevil: "they deserve a proper burial
chris107: Mordred nods sadly.
Smon: Magdra looks a little puzzled as Danor strips and buries the foxfur pelts.
chris107: "Why thank you very much Magdra."
Smon: GM: Vitality potion maximises hd recovery on short rest for 24 hrs after drinking.
Smon: The potion's crimson liquid pulses with red light.
Smon: Magdra: "It pulses the beat of he heart of Rhiannon, Mistress of Witches."
Keelia: Bright Star tilts her head curiously.
chris107: (Those fox pelts were very valuable, weren't they?)
Keelia: "Rhiannon?"
Keelia: (The witch probably isn't bothered by foxes who are not her companion)
Smon: "Our Goddess."
JamesDevil: I guess we can take them, i just didn't fancy insulting the lady by taking them

Keelia: "Then Mordred should be particularly grateful!"
chris107: "As indeed I am."
JamesDevil: "Right we should move on and find the leader of these Ogres"
Keelia: "Bright Star wishes you good fortune. We shall go see if we can remove any other ogres from the area."
chris107: "Stay safe Magdra and Lightning!"
Smon: Magdra: "Be careful of Vera, and her Shaman Jubal. Usually no one can find my home unwanted... Jubal must have cast a magic on this ogre to help him find the way."
Smon: "Oh, could you help me roll him out of the hut before you go?"
JamesDevil: ofc
Smon: She smiles again at Mordred & Danor.
chris107: "Of course."
Keelia: "Then we shall see what we can do about preventing him from casting any other such spells."
JamesDevil: we drag his corpse out into the forest
chris107: "Permanently."
Smon: "Thank you." GM: You manhandle the huge corpse out into the woods. Magdra rewards the menfolk with a kiss on the cheek.
JamesDevil: "stay safe"
chris107: Mordred will be carful to wash thoroughly once out of sight.
Smon: "Stay safe, and come back if you find any interesting potion ingredients!"
Keelia: Bright Star nods.
JamesDevil: "Danor shakes his head is disappointment at Mordred"
chris107: marking the position of her hut on his map.
Smon: Magdra waves you goodbye, the silver fox Lightning at her feet.
chris107: Mordred waves back.
chris107: "Lightning was very nice."
Keelia: Bright Star leads the way back to the path.
Smon: GM: You return north to the main path. You can have 400 XP each for the fortuitous encounter.

Keelia: nice!
Smon: Half an hour later you are approaching the overgrown ruins of Erdea Manor - let me know if you want to short rest before going in.
Smon: The upper works seem abandoned now, but you do spot recent ogre sized footprints going back and forth from the entry stairs.
Keelia: (Bright Star doesn't need one)
chris107: (Mordred is good to go)
JamesDevil: Danor is good to go
chris107: Does the secret room still seem undetected?
Smon: It's about 11am, maybe a bit before.
chris107: We can go through the store room now, avoiding the trap."
Smon: You descend the broad steps. The secret armoury seems undisturbed.
JamesDevil: lets do that
chris107: Then straight down the steps.
chris107: into the vaulted chamber
Smon: GM: OK you go through the room that had the barricade, to the stairs down to level 2, and descend.
Smon: Morded is using the sword for light?
chris107: which has two lots of steps down.
chris107: Yes please, Simon.
chris107: Steps to east and west of the great vaulted chamber according to my map.
Smon: GM: OK you descend 40' down the spiral stairs to the Great Hall of level 2.
Keelia: Bright Star activates stealth mode

Smon: Yes, in the great hall as you come in from the west there is a matching set of descending steps through an arch in the east wall.
chris107: Mordrfed stealths too, though glows brightly doing so.
Smon: There are 4 tunnels out.
chris107 rolls 1d1+3 and gets: 1 (+3) = 4
Smon: At north and south ends of west & east walls. All 4 tunnels run east-west.

Smon: The south end of the hall is wider, with alcoves at w & e ends, while the n end has a sort of semi-circular extension, as might be used to hold a shrine, altar or such.
Keelia: keep going - just going for a drink
Smon: BS's sensitive nose detects a foul odour from the north end of the hall.

Smon: It seems to be emanating from the northern tunnel in the west wall.
Keelia: Bright Star points this out to the others
chris107: Shall we investigate?
JamesDevil: yep
chris107: Berta will flap over first
chris107: (@ Simon, do the alcoves to the south come before or after the exit tunnels east and west?)
Smon: GM: Mordred can see through Vera's eyes - this leaves him blind & effectively helpless while doing so.
JamesDevil: Danor casts SoF
Smon: The alcoves are at the very south end, beyond the tunnels.
chris107: He just wants to send the owl over then it can return and communicate what it saw?

Smon: Berta flaps over to the w tunnel and returns to Mordred, reporting that it runs west ca 30' then turns north, with a door in the south wall before the turn.
chris107: Flap to the NE exit and do the same.
Smon: The NE tunnel only runs E 15' then curves N, with a door inset in wall to the SE at the turn.
Smon: The door looks smashed and broken, hangly loosely.
Keelia: Bright Star stands by Mordred waiting to see what their agreed upon path

Smon: It looks like a possible outline of a secret door.

JamesDevil: o, thats not so bad

chris107: Mordred stands guard at the bottom of the steps in, watching north too.
Smon: BS heads over to the south side of the room, checks it out - yes a secret door, and a torch sconce to the left looks like the activation lever.

Smon: The door slides open! Beyond is a narrow 5' deep landing, with stairs down to w and e.
Smon: The walls here are rough, unlike the closely mortared blocks of the great hall.

Keelia: Can she see any footsteps? or any indication of which direction to go.
Smon: The short flights of stairs only descend about 10' with narrow tunnel running off w & e.

Smon: The floor here is dry & somewhat dusty. It doesn't seem as if anyone has been this way for a very long time.
Keelia: Bright Star heads down to the junction and looks both ways to see if either looks more interesting
Smon: BS steps out onto the landing to get a clear look both ways.
Smon: The west tunnel runs about 50' then turns south out of sight.
Smon: The east tunnel runs about 30' then turns north out of sight.
Smon: Both tunnels are 5' wide and rough-hewn.
Keelia: Bright Star looks to the others - "Any preference?"
JamesDevil: North is my preference
chris107: "May as well see where both go?"

Keelia: "We'll have a quick look then find Vera."
chris107: Being carful to sweep any tracks and closing the secret door behind them. Mordred goes in last.
Smon: You go east then north down the secret tunnel?
JamesDevil: yep
Smon: Mordred does his best to sweep signs of passage through the secret door, closing it behind him, and the three of you head down the narrow stairs & east.
chris107: Leaving Berta by the closed secret door (on our side) in case it is opened.
Smon: The silent, narrow tunnel brushes Mordred's head as you head down it. A few cobwebs.
Smon: Berta is left behind perching on the torch sconce.
chris107: "Ugghhh, spiders!"
JamesDevil: Danor continues to be disappointed in Mordred

Smon: The tunnel turns north. Ahead Danor & co see it runs about 40' to narrow steps going up, with a door in the east wall after about 25'.
Keelia: Bright Star grins back at him.
Smon: Beyond the steps you see the tunnel continues NE.
JamesDevil: is there enough room for BS to check the door?
Smon: Approaching the door in the east wall. It is of dark wood, appears dry, intact & unlocked.
JamesDevil: hmm, ok, Danor will just open it think
Smon: No visible traps, there is a handle.
JamesDevil: Danor uses the handle
Smon: Danor opens the door, it creaks slightly. Beyond is a square store room, a faint musty scent, with crates, a barrel, and racks of Nerathi daggers & shortswords, quivers of arrows. A wooden shelf on the far wall holds several bottles, three are small gourds, one wine bottle sized.
JamesDevil: "storage room, do we want to search it?"
Smon: No visible exit. The floor is slightly dusty and as with the tunnel, seems long undisturbed.
Keelia: "yes,"
chris107: "Let's push on first?"
chris107: "We can always come back to search."
JamesDevil: k, pushing on then up the stairs we go
Keelia: Bright Star shrugs and follows them back
Smon: OK you head up the narrow stairs, the tunnel continuing on NE about 20' before splitting in a N-E Y junction. 10' down the tunnel in the north wall is inset what looks like the back of a second secret door.

JamesDevil: we can go back if you like
Keelia: (it's fine, we can go back later)
JamesDevil: ok, do we see any sign of a way to open the secret door form this side?
Smon: Yes, there is an obvious catch.
Smon: /roll d20
Smon rolls 1d20 and gets: 17,
Smon: BS notices what look like paw prints on the ground here, from the secret door ne.
Smon: It looks as if a large 4 footed predator walked up to the door & went through!
JamesDevil: how big? cat sized or tiger sized?
JamesDevil: k
JamesDevil: shall we follow the footprints?
Smon: Not tiger sized.
Smon: Can roll INT/nature
JamesDevil rolls 1d20 and gets: 10,
Keelia rolls 1d20 and gets: 3,
JamesDevil: meh

Smon: Don't seem right for a cat, but not right for a wolf either.

Smon: Looking NE down the tunnel you make out more of the prints, going back and forth.

Smon: It looks as if creature(s) have been using the secret door.

Smon: In the wall to your left/NW.

chris107: I think I have it. I'll remove all the other maps and post a final one when we finish)
JamesDevil: ok, lets open the secret door and explore that way

chris107: Mordred concentrates and summons Berta
Smon: Danor goes up to the secret door. Mordred summons Berta to him.

JamesDevil: you want to sentd Berta through on its own?
Smon: Suddenly something large and furry appears at the intersection to the NE - a giant weasel!
Keelia: Bright Star hisses.
Smon: It looks at you, eyes gleaming redly in the light of the sword.
Smon: /roll 2d6
Smon rolls 2d6 and gets: 1, 6, = 7
chris107: "Oh crap."
Smon: BS hisses and it ducks back out of sight down the eastern branch of the Y.
JamesDevil: Danor rushes into melee
Smon: Danor charges off after the weasel...
Keelia: Bright Star draws her bow

JamesDevil: whatever it is...
chris107: Mordred sighs and chases after them.
Smon: Reaching the intersection he looks east 30' down a narrow passage and sees the weasel scurrying into a large chamber beyond. He hears yipping sounds from the chamber - more weasels.
chris107: Does m know anything of giant weasels?
Smon: 20' down the passage is an archway in the s wall.
Smon: Giant weasels are predators who often live underground, they mostly eat giant rats & cave crickets but have been known to eat kobolds, goblins, stray hobbits etc.
JamesDevil: Danor will move up 20' to the arch
chris107: Thanks, Mordred doesn't think they will bother us if we leave them alone.
Keelia: Bright Star follows, bow drawn

Smon: Danor reaches the south arch, the others reach the Y junction behind him. Through the south/right arch he sees narrow steps descending into darkness.
JamesDevil: you want to risk them sneaking up and attacking us?
Smon: Through the east arch is a large chamber, once an alchemical store room, now ruined and smelling of weasels.
chris107: No, I guess not
JamesDevil: leave them alone then?
chris107: But I'm sure we can scare them off if they try?
Keelia: Is there any way to close a door?
Smon: No doors here
JamesDevil: Danor will then move up to the doorway of the room and try to barracade the door
chris107: Also they may be good at catching Quasits
JamesDevil: ok, let pull back then, someone pick a path
chris107: NE or through the secret door?
Keelia: NE
Smon: Danor moves up to the entry of the weasel lair - Alchemical Storage. Once filled with beakers and bottles and mixing equipment, everything here is ruined and the place has been turned into a nest for 3 Giant Weasels. Amidst the debris of the nest are tattered remains of what look like clerical scrolls.
JamesDevil: secret door seems like a good idea
JamesDevil: or NE whichever
Smon: Three weasels glare and hiss at Danor.
JamesDevil: hmm, there are only 3 of them
chris107: "But they are sooo cute!"
JamesDevil: Sacred Flame on the nearest one
Smon: The weasels arch their backs, hair standing on end to fluff out and look bigger.
chris107: "Arrgghhh!"
JamesDevil: good, a bigger target

Smon: A weasel rolls aside as sacred flame blasts down... seeing Danor won't back down, the weasels attack in a flurry of fur!

Smon: Weasels nip at Danor but no effect
Smon: M & BS can come up and look over D's shoulder/head at the cute weasels nipping at him. They're medium sized, about 100 lb.

Smon: The last weasel attacks him.

Smon: miss; BS can shoot again

Smon: with some sleep potion on her arrow

Smon: GM: Danor starts searching - most of the stuff here has been ruined, but Danor is able to extract 3 useable scrolls from the nest - Detect Evil & Good, Locate Object, Continual Flame.
JamesDevil: excellent lets move on
